Maria Bakalova doesn't consider 'The Apprentice' to be a Donald Trump "biopic".The 27-year-old actress plays the former US president's first wife Ivana Trump in the movie about his business career during the 1970s and 80s and insists that Ali Abbasi's film is about more than just the controversial politician - who is portrayed by Sebastian Stan in the flick.Maria told Deadline's Breaking Baz column at the Cannes Film Festival: "This is not a biopic. I don't see this as a biopic, because not every single detail of Trump's life exists in this movie."And I don't want to say this is a Trump movie. I think this is a bigger movie than just focused on one person that is not completely the same story. And it's inspired by him, but it's not a biopic for me."'The Apprentice' implies that Ivana, who died...

Every superhero gets an origin story. So, for that matter, do most supervillains. The Apprentice drops viewers into New York circa 1973, when a 34-year-old resident of Queens walked in to the upper-crust establishment on the Upper West Side known as Le Club. He went there in an attempt to impress a young woman. He’d leave having met a well-known lawyer and well-connected member of New York’s elite, who would end up changing his life. The legal eagle was the notorious Roy Cohn. The outer-borough wannabe was Donald Trump.

The Apprentice director Ali Abbasi has said he would like Donald Trump to watch his Cannes Competition selection after the former US president’s campaign declared it will sue the filmmakers over “blatantly false assertions”.
“I don’t necessarily think this a movie he would dislike,” Abbasi told a Cannes press conference on Tuesday. ”I think he would be surprised. I would offer to go and meet him and have a screening and talk about the movie afterwards.”

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign is hitting back following the premiere of the controversial film “The Apprentice,” which chronicles the 2024 presidential candidate’s early years as a real estate developer.
“We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers,” the Trump campaign’s chief spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement to Variety. “This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked. As with the illegal Biden Trials, this is election interference by Hollywood elites, who know that President Trump will retake the White House and beat their candidate of choice because nothing they have done has worked.”
Cheung’s statement continues, “This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-dvd section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire.

Even in Cannes, it’s hard to avoid Donald Trump.
“The Apprentice,” the story of the 45th and possibly 47th president’s early years as a real estate developer, earned a eight-minute standing ovation on Monday. It’s probably safe to assume that the film festival crowd isn’t a Maga-heavy one, so it helps that “The Apprentice” paints a blistering portrait, focusing on Trump’s relationship with Roy Cohn, the McCarthy-ite lawyer and fixer who took an interest in the “the Donald” before he was a household name.
Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) stars as Trump, Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) plays Cohn and Maria Bakalova (“Borat 2”) portrays Ivana Trump, the thrice-married president’s first spouse. Ali Abbasi, the Iranian-Danish filmmaker behind “Border” and “Holy Spider,” directs the movie from a script by Gabriel Sherman, a journalist who covered the Trump White House, as well as...

The Trumps were on the red carpet this evening at the Cannes Film Festival — sort of — as Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice world premiered in competition. The film was greeted with an 11-minute post-screening ovation at the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
Sebastian Stan, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominee known for his work in the MCU and the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, here plays a young Donald Trump with Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat 2) as Trump’s first wife, Ivana. Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jeremy Strong also stars as infamous attorney Roy Cohn, and Martin Donovan is playing Fred Trump.
Stan and Bakalova attended the red-carpet premiere. Strong was not in attendance as we understand he stayed in New York where he is starring on Broadway in An Enemy of the People.
Abbasi in remarks after the film said he wanted to embrace the politics of now in cinema with so much unrest in the world.
“In the time of turmoil, there’s this tendency to look inwards, to bury your head deep in the sand … and hope for the best, hope for the storm to get away,” he said. “But you know, the storm is not going away, the storm is coming, actually. The worst times are to come.”

There was lots of hugs going around among Abbasi, Stan and Bakalova as the lights went up on the two-hour film. Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo and Oliver Stone were among the crowd applauding afterward. Stone, who has made his share of political films, even offered a spot review.

An exploration of power and ambition, and set in a world of corruption and deceit, The Apprentice examines Trump’s efforts to build his real estate business in New York in the 1970s and 80s, also digging into his relationship with Cohn. It’s a mentor-protégé story that charts the origins of a major American dynasty. Filled with larger than life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers.
The real-life former Potus is currently standing trial in a criminal hush-money case in New York.
Gabriel Sherman, whose bestseller The Loudest Voice in the Room inspired Showtime’s miniseries The Loudest Voice, starring Russell Crowe as Fox News founder Roger Ailes, wrote The Apprentice script.
The Apprentice producers are Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films, Jacob Jarek of Profile Pictures and Ruth Treacy of Taylored Films. Executive producers are Grant S. Johnson, Sherman and Amy Baer, in association with Kinematics as the financier.
International sales are being handled by Rocket Science with CAA and WME on domestic sales in Cannes. Studiocanal recently acquired UK-Ireland rights.

Of all the various actors who've made their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sebastian Stan might be the one who's chosen the most interesting career path upon stepping outside of the superhero limelight. Stan hasn't exactly shied away from some of the more challenging and, occasionally, downright controversial roles out there, arguably beginning this little streak of sorts with director Craig Gillespie's "I, Tonya" in 2017. He followed this up with a supporting turn in Karyn Kusama's brutal "Destroyer," the bizarre horror/comedy "Fresh" (let's just say that movie packs a bite), and, of course, his Emmy-nominated performance as Tommy Lee in "Pam & Tommy," the Pamela Anderson-centric Hulu miniseries that stirred up no headlines whatsoever.
Not content to rest on his laurels, Stan promptly went and attached himself to a role that likely gave his agent no shortage of heart palpitations: a movie about Donald Trump's rise to infamy.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival may be lighter on glitz and glamour than in years past, but that means arthouse and international fare from emerging and established filmmakers will get a chance to shine. Still, at least two American auteurs, Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Paul Schrader, have films in the main competition for the first time in decades. David Cronenberg (“The Shrouds”) and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Kinds of Kindness”) are also back at the festival, with both making personal stories in their own way: Cronenberg, here, reckons with grief over the death of his wife seven years ago, while Lanthimos appears to retreat back into “Dogtooth” territory in a film that’s almost a rebuke of the global success he’s acquired with “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”
Sean Baker, Andrea Arnold, Ali Abbasi, Jia Zhangke, Karim Aïnouz, and Paolo Sorrentino are also back at Cannes this year with new films in the competition.

By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.
As has been the case throughout practically all of Oscars history, the United States is by far the dominant birthplace among the 2015-2024 acting winners. Of the group’s 37 unique members, 26 (or 70.3%) originate from there, including newly-crowned victors Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Netflix comedy movies in March 2024 cover every subgenre in the category. Whether you’re looking to stream slapstick, a rom-com, or something with a side of horror, Netflix’s March additions have something for you.
While any time is a good time to watch a comedy, springtime and laughs can go hand-in-hand. With warmer weather (and summer blockbusters) around the corner, spend your March with Netflix’s best comedy movies.
‘Beverly Hills Ninja’ Coming to Netflix March 1
Celebrate comedy legend Chris Farley by streaming Beverly Hills Ninja on Netflix beginning March 1. The 1997 martial arts comedy marks the final film released during Farley’s lifetime, as the actor died less than a year after its release.
Farley stars as Haru, adopted as a child by a clan of ninjas who believe he’ll become the master promised in legends. As expected, Haru never entirely becomes a ninja despite his best efforts.

There was no greater surprise at last year’s Cannes Film Festival than Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.” Glazer, a British avant-garde filmmaker found himself at the center of Oscar buzz for his adaptation of Martin Amis‘ 2014 novel about Rudolf Hoss (Christian Friedel), the commandant of Auschwitz and his wife. The hauntingly quiet film won the Grand Jury Prize. At the heart of the film is Sandra Huller as Hedwig Hoss. Here are five reasons why we think she’ll reap a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
She’s in contention for another film
Huller is the lead in Justine Triet’s Palme D’Or winning courtroom drama, “Anatomy of a Fall” and is expected to number among the five Best Actress nominees. A dozen performers have competed in both the lead and supporting races in the same year. She could be the lucky 13th, as voters who watch...

Best Supporting Actress has been the trickiest of the four acting categories to predict throughout this awards season and that remains true even now, just days before the Academy Award nominations are announced on Tuesday.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph looks like a lock thanks to her sterling turn in “The Holdovers,” while Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) and Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”) seems guaranteed to get their first nominations. The fourth and fifth slot, however, are up for grabs. Currently, we are predicting that veteran duo Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) and Julianne Moore (“May December”) will secure the final two bids but they aren’t sure things.
And a certain British actress by the name of Rosamund Pike could take advantage of that uncertainty. She was previously nominated for Best Actress for “Gone Girl” in 2015, when she coincidentally lost to Moore, who won for “Still Alice.” Pike is hoping for her second Oscar...

Filmmaker Judd Apatow disagrees with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to classify Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie as an adapted screenplay rather than original.
“It’s insulting to the writers to say they were working off of existing material,” the ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘This Is 40’ director wrote on X/Twitter, reports Variety.

It was reported that ‘Barbie’ will compete for a best adapted screenplay nomination in the Oscar race, despite campaigning for original screenplay.

Many films about pre-existing characters — such as previous Oscar nominees ‘Toy Story 3’, ‘Borat 2’, ‘Before Sunset’ and ‘Before Midnight’ — were ultimately classified as adapted screenplays.

Julianne Moore is predicted to land her sixth Oscar nomination thanks to her delicious role in Todd Haynes‘ Netflix melodrama “May December.” In this one, Moore features as an older woman named Gracie who is married with kids to Charles Melton‘s much younger Joe. The two are the subject of an upcoming movie and actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) visits them in order to properly portray Gracie. The in-movie movie will explore their scandalous affair, which started years ago when Joe was only 13.
This isn’t the first time Moore has been exquisite in a Haynes movie, of course, as the two are frequent collaborators. “Far From Heaven” is perhaps their best work together so far but “May December” is right up there and the same can be said about Moore’s supporting performance. The Critics Choice Awards is renowned as one of the best barometers for predicting the Oscars. Over its 28-year history, these kudos have previewed 16 Best Picture Oscar winners as well as 23 Best Director, 19 Best Actor, 15 Best Actress, 18 Supporting Actor and 19 Supporting Actress champs. Let’s take a closer look at the results of the last seven awards seasons to see if the Critics Choice Awards are still a good luck charm to have in hand when making your 2024 Oscar predictions.
Last year, these kudos foresaw three of the five big Oscar wins for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”: Best Picture, Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) and Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan). However, the Cca went with Cate Blanchett (“Tar”) for Best Actress over Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) for Supporting Actress rather than Jamie Lee Curtis. The critics and academy concurred on Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) for Best Actor.

“Jury Duty” is a reality show. Or is it a sitcom? A documentary? An elaborate prank?
How about all of the above?
One of 2023’s defining breakouts, the Amazon Freevee series is the crown jewel of an ascendant hybrid genre sometimes referred to as docu-comedy. Even the people who made the show aren’t sure how to classify it. Director Jake Syzmanski and co-creator Lee Eisenberg say they’ve never heard that term. Eisenberg suggested hidden-camera comedy, but that’s not really accurate either, as everyone involved knew they were being filmed. Robyn Adams, a producer, used “outlined improv.” Whatever nomenclature best applies, this increasingly common format has enjoyed a banner year, with “Jury Duty,” Peacock’s “Paul T. Goldman,” BBC and Netflix’s “Cunk on Earth,” and HBO’s “How To with John Wilson” picking up where the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen and Nathan Fielder left off.

The New York Film Critics Circle is so determined to be one of the first groups to weigh in with its picks for the best of the year that the date of its decision-making keeps getting advanced. Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) switching from Best Supporting Actress to Best Actress feels like some time ago now but the impact of that move can still be felt as the former category is the most open race we have this year. Such an open race, however, leads to excitement and surprise, leaving the door open for any number of contenders to take the lead in this race.
And no performance deserves to be out in front more in this category than Julianne Moore‘s role in Todd Haynes‘ “May December.” Moore collaborates with Haynes again after they worked together in several movies including “Far From Heaven,” but Netflix’s “May December” is a bold new entry in their canon that you can now catch in US theaters after it released on November 17. The movie will drop on Netflix on December 1.

The 2024 Writers Guild Awards ceremony will take place on April 14, 2024, the guild announced on Wednesday, pushing the so-called precursor to after the 2024 Oscars.
“This year’s Writers Guild Awards are being held in April to allow for a full awards submissions process to occur after the strike,” the WGA said in a statement provided to press, including Variety.
Because of the schedule shift, the WGA Awards results will not necessarily have an impact on this year’s Oscars race – not that the guild’s award winners always correlate to subsequent Oscar success in the screenwriting categories. However, the new WGA Awards timeline still slightly aligns with Oscars season. Nominees for the 2024 WGA Awards will be announced on February 21, 2024, one day before final Oscars winners voting begins.

Maria Bakalova, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and has gone on to have roles in The Bubble and Bodies Bodies Bodies (and deliver vocal performances in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), has signed on to star in the horror film God’s Country, which is being produced by The Batman director Matt Reeves.
Bakalova takes over a role that had previously been assigned to Melissa Barrera of the recent Scream sequels. Barrera had to drop out of the project over scheduling issues.
The film will mark the English-language debut of director Egor Abramenko, who made his feature directorial debut with the Russian horror film Sputnik. Director Egor Abramenko gave a new twist to the creature feature in 2020’s Sputnik. He’s now set to take on biblical terror in God’s Country, marking his American directorial debut. Deadline reports that Bodies Bodies Bodies star Maria Bakalova will lead the Matt Reeves-produced genre pic.
God’s Country will follow “a young woman who travels to Kentucky to meet her fiancé, subsequently uncovering something sinister beyond comprehension, as her American dream curdles into a nightmare of biblical proportions.”
Will Soodik (“Westworld”) wrote the script.
Bakalova takes over for Melissa Barrera, who reportedly exited the role due scheduling conflicts. God’s Country is set to go into production in Romania under a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement in March. Barrera was announced to lead the project in February earlier this year, where her character was described as a Salvadoran woman.

United Agents is “conducting a full and thorough investigation” into one of the most prominent British comedy agents after she was called out for a spate of reposts and shares regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Michael Fassbender and David Fincher teaming up makes perfect sense. The duo work together so well in their new movie “The Killer” that it’s a wonder that they haven’t collaborated before. Netflix is releasing it theatrically on Oct. 27 and it will start streaming on Nov. 10.
In the new thriller, Fassbender plays a cold, meticulous, philosophizing hitman who must go on a mission to right his own wrong when he makes a mistake on a job. He’s also out for revenge, as is par for the course for a lot of assassin movies. But what isn’t par for the course is Fassbender’s lean and mean performance. We very rarely hear him speak in his actual scenes. Instead, we mostly hear him in a constantly-running voiceover, Fassbender utilizing his rasping voice to good effect. In his scenes, it’s Fassbender’s physicality — from impressive yoga to brutal...

Everyone thought that Best Supporting Actress was locked up and secured, with Lily Gladstone from “Killers of the Flower Moon” the overwhelming favorite. Then came the bombshell: Gladstone had been switched from supporting to lead. This threw Oscarologists into a state of hysteria as many claimed it was a foolish move — she was a shoo-in to win Best Supporting Actress, why change? — while others argued that her screen time in Martin Scorsese‘s epic justified the move.
The one thing we can all agree on, however, is that it has blown the Best Supporting Actress race wide open, which could leave room for a surprise nomination or two. Enter Rosamund Pike. Pike stars in Emerald Fennell‘s latest flick, “Saltburn,” which follows Barry Keoghan as Oliver Quick, an Oxford student who becomes obsessed with his rich classmate, Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). “Saltburn” has screened at this year’s London Film Festival and it looks like writer-director Emerald Fennell has another hit on her hands after the success of her debut, “Promising Young Woman.” That film won her Best Original Screenplay (plus Best Director and Picture nominations) in 2021, but she’s stepped her filmmaking game up a gear with the ambitious “Saltburn.”
The film follows Barry Keoghan as Oliver, an Oxford University student who becomes obsessed with his rich classmate, Felix, played by Jacob Elordi. Oliver stays at the extraordinary manor of Felix’s family, where, without any spoilers, further drama plays out. The film is a funny, witty, knowing examination of the rich upper class and has plenty of touches of darkness, too to flesh out the picture. As a result, “Saltburn” feels like it could be a genuine Academy Awards contender. Here are all the Oscars we think “Saltburn” could be nominated for.

Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical interview character Ali G turns 25 this year, and to celebrate, he might be making a comeback. According to a report by Variety, the "Borat," "Bruno," and "Da Ali G Show" creator is planning to incorporate Ali G into a future comedy tour, although a source close to the actor-comedian wants to be clear that Baron Cohen is fully adhering to the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike rules. That means that whatever Ali G project is in the works, it's not a new movie.

Rudy Giuliani Reportedly Calls Matt Damon A Homophobic Slur In New Audio Transcript Filed In Lawsuit
In a new lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City reportedly called Matt Damon an insulting slur in newly filed documents.
Amongst the new docs — filed Wednesday by Giuliani’s former assistant, Noelle Dunphy — are revealing transcripts of audio recordings of the politician’s intimate encounters.
In one of the transcripts, after Dunphy asks Giuliani about Republican celebrities, he reportedly replies: “Ain’t too many. Brad — not Brad Pitt. The other guy that looks like him.”

When Dunphy attempts to clarify if he means Bradley Cooper, Giuliani says he doesn’t — per the transcript — before pointing out that “Matt Damon is very liberal.”
“No, Matt Damon is a — Matt Damon is a f*g,” the 79-year-old lawyer allegedly responds before he’s quoted saying: “Matt Damon is also 5’2, eyes are blue.

When the genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” launched its eight-episode run in April, Emmy nominations were the farthest thing from anyone’s mind. Of greater concern was simply having people know it was available at all, given that it was available on the little-known Amazon Freevee streaming service. “Actually, it was a blessing and a curse because it was such a crazy experimental undertaking,” admits Cody Heller, “Jury Duty’s” showrunner and executive producer. “There were moments where I was like, ‘Ok, if the show blows up and fails, at least no one will probably see it.’ But then once we finished it and we were all so proud of the work we’d done, we were like, ‘Oh man, I hope people watch it.'” Added fellow exec producer Nicholas Hatton: “To know that people have received the show in the spirit in which we intended has been beyond rewarding.

There’s a moment in “Barbie” where Ryan Gosling, who plays the wickedly funny and insecure manchild, Ken, steps off the screen and yells, “Sublime!” It might be the most extraordinary Oscar-worthy clip of a person not to be seen on screen.
“Barbie,” the new meta-comedy from Warner Bros, which also acts as an infomercial for Mattel, finally lands for audiences and could be one of the leading comedy films seeking Oscar recognition by year’s end if Academy members can take it seriously. Gosling’s iconic turn, at least, is worthy of best supporting actor recognition.
Commercial comedies, particularly those without the added “dramedy” sub-qualifier, have faced difficulty landing Academy recognition for decades. However, a promising trend has been seen in the last few years with acting nominees like Robert Downey Jr in “Tropic Thunder” (2008), Melissa McCarthy in “Bridesmaids” (2011) and Maria Bakalova in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (2020) landing comfortably in their respective fields.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” has wrapped things up for the five-film franchise, starring Harrison Ford as one of cinema’s most iconic characters of all time. The film follows Ford as Indy, a world-famous archaeologist, as he goes on a hunt for an ancient artifact that can alter the course of history. Starring alongside him are new faces such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, and Mads Mikkelsen, plus returning heroes Karen Allen and John Rhys-Davies.
The first four “Indiana Jones” movies amassed six Oscar wins and 13 nominations between them, with the franchise’s first outing, “Raiders of the Lost” winning four and landing eight nods in total, including bids for Best Picture and Best Director for Steven Spielberg. It’ll be a mighty achievement for “Dial of Destiny” to match this, particularly as the previous installment, “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” was snubbed entirely by Academy voters.

Melissa McCarthy is calling out the misconception behind comedies in Hollywood during the latest episode of “Hot Ones.”
“Somehow the new logline is that comedies don’t work,” McCarthy said. “I think bad comedies, I think bad movies don’t work but I will fight to my last breath, which will be in about 4 more wings, that comedies are important and I think it brings people together.”
She added, “I just want to keep variety in the pie, I think once it goes darker, darker, darker, darker, darker…and it’s only dark that gets valued and it’s only the worst of humanity. It’s like I want to cry, I want to be heartbroken, I want to feel hopeful and I want to laugh.”

Exclusive: As the Annecy Animation Film Festival gets underway this weekend, Warner Bros’ newly hired President of Feature Animation Bill Damaschke has announced a rebranding of the motion picture division with a focus on filmmakers.
Previously known as Wag, aka Warner Animation Group, the Burbank, CA lot’s feature toon unit will now be known as Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
“It’s honoring the past and rich history of the company. Warner Bros Pictures Animation released movies like Iron Giant, Space Jam, Corpse Bride, Polar Express, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie — benchmark films that broke new ground, new technology, new ways of telling stories and were successful, artistically and commercially. They last in people’s hearts, every one of those films,” said Damaschke about the label, which counts a filmmaker-driven original feature animated canon from such directors as Brad Bird, Tim Burton, George Miller, Robert Zemeckis, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The show, utilizing reenactments and behind-the-scenes shots, has the eccentric Finkelman telling the story of his relationship with his second wife, whom he believed was living a double life as a prostitute, dating her pimp and running an international sex trafficking ring.
It was directed by “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” director Jason Woliner, who brought an ambitious use of satire to the streaming platform. Finkelman’s unique delivery and distorted facts and his attempt to set the record straight in the form of a movie that he directs and writes himself, starring himself, creates an unconventional type of nonfiction storytelling. Still, Peacock and Woliner saw it as a documentary and decided to submit it for Emmys consideration in outstanding documentary or nonfiction series.

Maria Bakalova, the Oscar-nominated star of “Borat Subsequent Movie Film,” is set to star in the action-comedy “My Masterpiece” for Sylvester Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions. Cassandra Brooksbank will make her feature directorial debut from a script by Jason Hellerman. The Veterans and CAA Media Finance will introduce the film to buyers at Cannes this week.
According to the official description, “My Masterpiece” follows a hitwoman hellbent on dismantling an unfair system within her industry, but she gets stuck on the second floor of an office building after she takes vengeance on a corporate overlord. That means she has to fight her way through fellow murderers and her past to ensure justice prevails. If all goes well, this might just be her masterpiece.
Production is expected to begin in fall 2023 in Canada. The Veterans are handling international sales. CAA Media Finance represents domestic distribution rights.

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
Few directors have had as good a three-year run of movies as Peter Bogdanovich did from 1971-73 with "The Last Picture Show," "What's Up, Doc?," and "Paper Moon." Each one demonstrated his ability to create big ensembles of people who all feel like fully realized people that you could easily follow off-screen and imagine their whole life.
Consequently, he directed six different actors to Oscar nominations in that span and three of them won. The first two were Cloris Leachman and Ben Johnson for "The Last Picture Show," both of whom were veteran character actors. The third, though, was someone making their feature film debut. Not only was this her first movie, she was just 10 years old when she won. That person was Tatum O'Neal,...

Netflix and Disney+ have ads, but Amazon has another idea.
Amazon Studios will soon license its original shows and movies to third-party platforms. The newly formed Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, announced on Monday, will license out Amazon originals (and continue to license MGM content) worldwide, making Amazon Prime Video the first major streamer to enter syndication in such a big way. Will Netflix be second? After all, no one covets revenue more.
As the once-bulletproof streaming industry collectively searches for new revenue streams, Netflix has arguably been the most vocal about the importance of the top-line accounting number. The king of the streamers, once faithfully married to one lone revenue stream, previously touted subscribers as its primary metric of success. Nowadays there is ad revenue from the “Basic with Ads” tier and unearthed subscriber revenue from paid sharing, and Netflix shareholder letters no longer offer subscriber forecasts.

Once upon a time, streaming was the future of television. Now, it's starting to look like the past, while the future, hilariously, looks like the TV we used to know. Case in point: today, Amazon Studios announced its intentions to get into the syndication game, with The Hollywood Reporter noting that the venture will be under the new banner of Amazon MGM Studios Distribution.
Syndication is, of course, a process that's been a part of linear television for decades, one that involves selling the rights to a title to other networks that will air reruns. Think "Supernatural" replaying on TNT all the time, or "Frasier" seemingly being available to watch on one channel or another at any given moment. THR says the deal will be made with MGM distribution partners and will feature some major shows and films including "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "Hunters," and "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm."

Original Amazon series like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” will be sold off-platform to third parties for the first time, the company announced Monday as it launched the new Amazon MGM Studios Distribution. A revamp of MGM’s pre-existing distribution team, the division will now handle Amazon Studios/Prime Video originals in addition to current and library titles. Chris Ottinger, who led the MGM distribution team for more than a decade, will oversee the new division.
Ottinger will report to Brad Beale, the VP of worldwide licensing and distribution at Amazon and MGM Studios; Beale, in turn, reports to Amazon/MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke.
“What did Amazon buy when they bought MGM? Well, they definitely got a big remakes and sequels catalog of rights,” Ottinger said. “They bought a finished product catalog, but they also got a big distribution business. In addition to my group, we have a domestic theatrical...
