The Gladstone, opened in 1889, is Toronto's oldest continuously operating hotel. During its restoration, chronicled in this film, the hotel's new owners uncovered North America's second oldest cage elevator, shown briefly near the end of film.
Near the end of the protracted five-year production of "Last Call at the Gladstone Hotel", filmmaker Derreck Roemer fell from his roof, breaking both wrists and two ribs. He shot the climactic final interview of the film with both arms in casts, fooling bystanders into believing that the casts were homemade camera braces.
