Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle have such a knack for capturing that unsure melancholy of your early teen years that this episode truly exemplifies, in my opinion. Realising the world is a little bigger than yourself, more serious, the jokes you make can be at the expense of the people around you. Not really knowing how to understand big things like grief and loss.
The scene in which the two get coerced into kissing a terminally ill boy stands out to me, there's something scary about being at that age and not understanding how to verbalise your own discomfort. In itself it's not as big a moment as some in later episodes, but I really appreciate how they decided to depict something more minute. They weren't physically forced. They weren't under any sort of influence. I don't believe the boys were being malicious. But the girls still didn't want to do it, even if it 'wasn't a big deal', even if they were doing something 'kind'. I'm sure the scene feels reminiscent for some, I myself felt my stomach turn.
"I feel sick though, I don't know why." I wish I could better put into words what I love about this episode, I just they nailed it yet again.
