2015 was a fantastic year for horror movies, and one of the more entertaining ones was writer/director Jason Lei Howden‘s metal/horror/comedy Deathgasm. It’s his debut feature, but you wouldn’t know it by how well it manages the balance between gory horror and big laughs. The movie recently hit home video from Dark Sky Films, and while it’s fairly light on special features it does include a commentary track from Howden. He’s understandably enthusiastic about his film, his cast & crew, and — of course — heavy metal music, and he delivers an entertaining track while worth a listen from fans. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Deathgasm commentary. Deathgasm (2015) Commentators: Jason Lei Howden (writer/director) 1. The opening black & white sequence was meant to emulate black metal album covers. 2. Producer Ant Timpson‘s “rectal prolapse” graphic is apparently on his business cards now. Hopefully I’ll remember to ask for one...

After moving ahead to cast a number of supporting roles, The CW and Wbtv have found a leading lady for the DC Comics adaptation "iZombie." Rose McIver is in place to star in "iZombie," which comes from "Veronica Mars" scribes Rob Thomas & Diane Ruggiero. The "iZombie" pilot will be directed by Thomas. A recently red-hot veteran of "Masters of Sex" and "Once Upon a Time," McIver will play med student-turned-zombie Olivia "Liv" Moore. After her transformation, Liv takes a job at the coroner's office, which initially is for the access to yummy, delicious brains. She soon discovers that with each mushy, brainy meal, she's also devouring the memories of the deceased, so she begins to use this information to work with a medical examiner and a police detective to solve crimes. The pilot's most recent addition was "One Tree Hill" veteran Robert Buckley playing Liv's ex-fiance. Previously cast co-stars include Malcolm Goodwin,...

The Purge takes place in the not-so-distant future where crime of any kind is acceptable for 12 hours. Ethan Hawke (Gattica), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Adelaide Kane (Power Rangers R.P.M.), and Max Burkholde (Brothers & Sisters) star in the movie where a family is attacked during this 12 hour period.
Synopsis:
If on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would you do? In The Purge, a speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home.
In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—becomes legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It’s one night when...

After maintaining a part on NBC’s Parenthood, 14-year-old Max Burkholder has been offered to play Charlie in Universal’s sci-fi thriller Vigilandia, opposite Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. Australian actress, Adelaide Kane, has also nabbed the role of Zoey, after starring in projects like Power Rangers R.P.M. and Neighbors. [The Wrap]
Producer, writer and director James DeMonaco is directing and writing the project, which marks his second directorial effort. He’s collaborated with Hawke a number of times, most notably on Assault on Precinct 13 and 2009′s Little New York. He is also the creator and executive producer of the Spike TV mini-series The Kill Point.
With Hawke singing on just a few weeks ago, we’re still a little blurry on plot details as of now; but I can only assume that Burkholder and Kane will be playing children of Hawke and Headey if the script ends up swaying that way.

Donner Pass A talented lineup of TV actors including John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), Desiree Hall (Teen Wolf) and Adelaide Kane (Power Rangers R.P.M.) gather to tackle the horror genre in Elise Robertson's feature length directorial debut of "Donner Pass". Donner Pass (the trailer can be seen below after the jump) is a dark, supernatural ghost story that is sure to give you goosebumps and make your spine tingle. Much like the film's cold, icy setting, Donner Pass has the potential to chill audiences to the bone with a story that seems ripe for creating a sense of disorientation with audiences.

After an exhaustive search, Bryan Singer has found the star of his next movie, Jack the Giant Killer. 21-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult will play the farmer who climbs the beanstalk and returns a hero in New Line’s medieval epic.
The fairy tale re-imagining centers on the dissolution of a long-standing truce between humans and the race of giants who live in the clouds above. When Princess Isabelle is captured by the towering enemy, the kingdom’s Guardians and a stowaway Jack venture up the beanstalk after her.
Stanley Tucci has been cast as Roderick, the charming Guardian leader scheduled to marry Isabelle with the king’s blessing, but who may not be quite who he seems. Bill Nighy and voice specialist John Kassir will play the halves of Fallon, the two-headed leader of the Gantuans (giants).

Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer has been coming together over the past couple weeks. We've heard casting for some of the supporing roles -- Bill Nighy, Stanley Tucci and John Kassir all have roles. Until today, there was no Jack. Now, just after we heard he was on a shortlist, the role has been offered to Nicholas Hoult, who had an early breakout role in About a Boy, then appeared in the original UK version of Skins, had a big role in A Single Man, and plays Beast in the Bryan Singer-produced X-Men: First Class. Deadline [1] calls Jack the Giant Killer "a scary revisionist take on the Jack and the Beanstalk mythology and Hoult will play a farmer who leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom to rescue a kidnapped princess." Before you think that the kid from About a Boy isn't really giant-fighting material, take into...

After picking up the official greenlight from New Line and a script polish by Christopher McQuarrie, Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer is lining up a shortlist of young, relatively unknown actors to lead his revisionist fairy tale.
Singer’s take centers on Jack, a lowly farmer in the kingdom of Cloister, who tags along with the king’s Guardians in an expedition to rescue the princess, Isabelle, after she is kidnapped by the cloud-dwelling Gantuans (giants).
According to Heat Vision, Aaron Johnson, star of Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass is still in the mix to play the humble farmer, as he has been for months now, going into screen tests in the coming weeks. Competing with Johnson for the titular role is Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man), who recently picked up the part of Beast in Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, which Singer is producing. Earlier reports had indicated...

Playing that other Salmon girl in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lovely Bones, Kiwi actress Rose McIver turned Lindsey -- older sister to Saoirse Ronan's Susie -- into one of the film's more grounded and enjoyable elements: part Nancy Drew, part budding action hero, and always convincing in her transformation from gawky tweendom through young adulthood. We spoke with the young actress, who might be familiar to your kids as one of the stars of Power Rangers Racing Performance Machines, on a recent visit to L.A. for Bones's U.S. premiere.

For those who believe in an afterlife, it will hopefully be a better experience than Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones. Though some of it is set in the "in between", a sort-of purgatory for murdered teen Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan, Atonement), it feels more like a scene from Dante's Inferno. What did I do to deserve watching one of cinema's most talented, imaginative filmmakers make a special-effects-laden version of a Hallmark film?
Based on Alice Sebold's popular but altogether average novel, The Lovely Bones seems to fit well with the rest of Jackson's resume. Each of his films, even the fact-based Heavenly Creatures, features some element of fantasy, though some films rely on it more than others. The Lovely Bones incorporates the elements of a crime thriller with the young victim's version of what lies beyond our world, adding beauty and whimsy to an otherwise unbearably dark story...
