- Toynton Grange is a nursing home in financial difficulty. Dalgliesh has been injured in a drug raid and invited to go there by an old friend. A fatal "accident" happens near the Black Tower..
- As Dalgliesh recovers physically and mentally from an injury sustained in the line of duty, and the breakup of his latest relationship, he's persuaded by his childhood priest, Father Baddeley, to visit Toynton Grange, a private nursing home for the progressively disabled. The Father is resident at the Grange and is concerned at some of the goings on.
Strained relationships are abound amongst the staff and resident patients of the Grange, where the pious and unpopular owner/manager Wilfrid Anstey, appears to have had his climbing rope deliberately frayed, and after Victor Holroyd is told that he may never walk again, events take a sinister turn.
