The episode of the anthology series 'Affairs of the Heart' draws on Henry James' novel 'Washington Square', here titled Catherine after the main female character (played by Lynn Farleigh, a good actress little seen these days). Catherine is an heiress, but she is plain. Therefore when a handsome young man called Morris Townsend (played by Ian Ogilvy) comes calling, Catherine's father (the always reliable Bernard Hepton) starts to be suspicious. But Townsend is charming and Catherine is smitten.
In fifty minutes, this version manages to put more across than other versions I've seen (the one called 'The Heiress' with Olivia De Havilland; and the one called 'Washington Square' with Jennifer Jason Leigh), mainly because of Farleigh's performance - she's delightful, and the twist at the end is well worth waiting for.
