Lorne Michaels, who is the most nominated individual in Emmy history, may find his chances of winning an award in 2021 a little tougher after the Television Academy introduced a swathe of changes to the rules.
The Saturday Night Live creator will now see his weekly NBC sketch series go head-to-head for nominations against two other shows that he exec produces – The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers as well as five-time winner Last Week Tonight with John Oliver after the awards organization merged the late-night talk show and variety sketch categories.
The move, which was announced late last Friday night, has caused anger and frustration among the late-night crowd.
It pits SNL, which has won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series four years in a row, against HBO’s Last Week Tonight, which has won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series five times...

Exclusive: The media is coming into focus for this week’s episode of Wilmore. The Peacock late-night comedy, fronted by Larry Wilmore, will look at the media with The West Wing star Bradley Whitford, journalist Soledad O’Brien and Saturday Night Live’s Chris Redd.
Whitford, who also stars in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, is coming off the back of A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote, which aired last week on HBO Max. O’Brien is the host of Matter of Fact, a nationally syndicated talk show produced by Hearst Television, and Redd has been a cast member of the NBC late-night comedy since 2017. Redd will also be Wilmore’s lightning round guest this week.
Wilmore is going into his sixth show since launching on the streamer. Other topics he has tackled include protests, voter suppression, police, class, and comparing where we are to the 2016 presidential election.

From the righteous indignation of Jon Stewart and John Oliver, to Jimmy Fallon normalizing Donald Trump with a hair ruffle, white men are the traditional leaders of the political talk show circuit. However, in an election year when the talking points belong to Black Lives Matter and other issues of civil rights, some networks have decided to reframe the conversation.
Larry Wilmore, host of Peacock’s “Wilmore,” puts it bluntly. “You’ve had your hosts like Arsenio [Hall], or some other Black hosts who did more entertainment-style shows,” he said, “but you didn’t have a show with a Black cast that competed in the John Oliver-type [space] where it’s supposed to be a smart take on the news.”
“Wilmore,” which debuted September 18, is similar to his Comedy Central series “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore,” which launched in January 2015 and ran until August 2016, a few months before Trump’s election.
