While helping Maggie prepare for a garage sale, Jan gets her arm stuck in a wall on the day she's supposed to attend a wedding with her new lawyer boyfriend.
This is one of the quirkiest episodes of the ABC run and one of the best of the season. It benefits from having all the ladies involved in the main story and not needing a silly B-plot to pad the script. This was the reason why all the Season 1 shows were so superior. Too bad the writers did not stick to that template in Season 2.
Cassie is giving off Season 1 vibes in this one so that's a big plus. She also looks very cute in her bowler hat. It's also fun seeing Louise Lasser in pigtails again - shades of Mary Hartman -- and Dot's whimsical bit with the hula hoop. Jan reminds me of Bette Midler when she debuts the new dress on Maggie's staircase.
The script mentions that Dot graduated in 1972 which would make her around 27, yet a few episodes back Dot told Nancy she was 24. I guess she was a gifted student.
Sam Freed who played Jan's boyfriend would eventually marry Barrie Youngfellow not long after this episode aired.
This was the final episode telecast on ABC in June 1982 before they canceled the show. MAKING A LIVING - as it was titled this season, came in a dismal 88th place in the Nielsen ratings.
SONGS: Maggie sings "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody" both times when Jan enters wearing the new dress.
