Flavorless confection
My expectations for "I Cookie" and "Key Note Pie" were mixed. Have seen episodes centered around cooking/baking before in the My Little Pony franchise, including a few episodes of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' and quite well. Pinkie Pie was an inconsistently written character but "I Cookie" sounded like a good scenario for her and 'Friendship is Magic' had some fantastic episodes centered around her. 'Pony Life' though has been disappointing and still continued to be after this double bill.
"I Cookie" and "Key Note Pie" is not one of the worst double bills from 'My Little Pony: Pony Life', thanks to "I Cookie" having moments of potential lived up to. It is still not particularly good with almost all the usual flaws present and with "Key Note Pie" being as bland as it was. Pinkie Pie has been much better written elsewhere and 'Pony Life' in general didn't do a particularly good job with her, "I Cookie" is though one of the better faring episodes when it comes to her character writing.
Of the two episodes, the infinitely superior one is "I Cookie". It is not great, with a thin story, a well intentioned but too rehashed and over simple moral and the more disturbing tonal shift being too abruptly introduced and with too much of a different episode feel. Pinkie Pie though is in a relatable situation, there are glimpses of her funny and cute 'Friendship is Magic' persona, she isn't treated badly and there are moments of amusing humour that aren't childish or over-reliant.
"Key Note Pie" however is really bland, with nothing really to it. No real redeeming quality other than Andrea Libman's valiant voice acting. It does nothing new with an old hat premise, has no creativity and doesn't really go anywhere. The plotting is barely there and the pace drags a lot. Charm and heart are completely absent, the too little humour being too juvenile and there is nothing endearing or relatable with Pie Pie, who is annoying and too pushy here.
Coming onto the individual elements, Libman's voice acting is the best aspect. The animation continues to look cheap however, especially in "Key Note Pie", the music is not infectious or memorable and grates. The storytelling is mostly unimaginative and simplistic and Pinkie Pie's character writing is inconsistent, fine in "I Cookie" but too much emphasis on exaggerated character flaws in "Key Note Pie".
All in all, lacklustre. "I Cookie" was mixed feelings level, "Key Note Pie" has almost nothing to recommend it. 4/10.
