Global arthouse movie streamer, producer and distributor Mubi has acquired all Turkish rights to Iranian director Saeed Roustaee’s timely Cannes title “Leila’s Brothers.”
A female empowerment drama set against the backdrop of a family crushed by debts linked to international economic sanctions, “Leila’s Brothers” won the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci) prize for best film in Cannes’ main competition.
The film, which is Roustaee’s third feature, follows from his tense actioner “Just 6.5,” about a cop trying to pin down a drug lord. This hit film, which exposed Iran’s heroin addiction plague, made an international splash and this year was nominated for France’s César Award for best foreign film.
“Leila’s Brothers” sees the 40-year-old Leila, played by Taraneh Alidoosti (“The Salesman”), as the titular character who has spent her whole life taking care of her parents and her four brothers. She has a plan to...

“I’m very comfortable playing damaged goods,” shares Alan Ruck of his character on HBO’s “Succession.” The veteran actor plays Connor Roy, the eldest son of media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox) who is often overlooked and ridiculed by his three half-siblings. “I tend to get cast in off-center sorts of roles,” reflects the actor on how this character fits into his extensive and memorable résumé. He praises the series for featuring “the best writing that I’ve ever encountered.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
In the third season of “Succession,” Connor seriously pursues his lofty ambition to become the President of the United States. Ruck rationalizes his character’s goal by saying, “I think all of us have delusional daydreams of one kind or another.” Although the actor does not know the direction of the character in the upcoming fourth season, he speculates that at best Connor...

After honoring “Reservation Dogs,” “Dopesick,” “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” and Dan Rather yesterday, the Peabody Awards continued their four-day rollout revealing seven additional winners. To no one’s surprise, HBO Max’s “Hacks” and the PBS docu-series “Philly D.A.” were among the winners. “It’s really about capturing all of that detail and then you’re deconstructing it and you’re reconstructing it and figuring it out how it all plays together,” reveals production designer Stephan Olson about ABC’s latest iteration its “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” series of live specials, who recently won the Art Directors Guild Award for production design on a Variety Special. “What we did on this and what they did in years prior is go through old videotapes or on YouTube and just screenshot every possible angle of the set and every architectural detail and furnishing, and just screenshot everything,” he explains, adding for our recent Q&a, “we did find some drawings of one of the sets, but they were preliminary drawings and they weren’t ‘as built,’ so they were kind of helpful too.” We talked with Olson as part of Gold Derby...

“Good morning aviators,” Tom Cruise says in a line from blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. “This is your captain speaking. Today’s exercise is dogfighting.”
Specifically, there is now a legal dogfight between the film’s box office high-flyer Paramount Pictures and the Israeli-based widow and son of the author of the 1983 article that inspired the original 1986 movie.
In a copyright suit filed Monday in California federal court, Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay want unspecified but clearly big-bucks damages from the studio and, with a very odd sense of timing, an injunction to stop screenings and distribution of the May 27-released sequel, as well as any more more movies in the franchise.
Calling Top Gun: Maverick “derivative,” the Marc Toberoff- and Alex Kozinski-represented Yonays allege that Paramount is “thumbing its nose at the statute” that allows the termination of rights after 35 years (read the court complaint here).

Jon Bernthal doesn’t want to wash away of his experience starring in the HBO limited series “We Own This City.” The actor stars as Wayne Jenkins, the real-life police officer who was convicted on corruption charges while leading the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force. The series is a fact-based account of the Gttf’s culture of duplicity, an approach by TV veterans David Simon and George Pelecanos that drew him to the project. “Oftentimes, you’re on a project and you’re trying to make a scene as entertaining as possible or to raise the stakes as much as possible, make it funny as possible or romantic as possible,” says Bernthal in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “I think the idea here was to tell the truth and to try to get it right.” Watch the full video chat above.

Sandra Oh has been a mainstay at the Emmy Awards since 2005, when she earned the first of her many nominations for “Grey’s Anatomy.” In the past 17 years, the celebrated actress has amassed an impressive 12 bids for four different projects: “Grey’s,” “Killing Eve,” “Saturday Night Live” and hosting the 76th Golden Globe Awards. Despite all of this past recognition, she still doesn’t have an Emmy Award on her mantle. Could her dozen past bids help her get nominated again this year and even win for the final season of BBC America’s “Killing Eve” or the first of Netflix’s “The Chair”? The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said Monday that Ava DuVernay will receive the group’s 2022 Founders Award, to be presented during the academy’s awards gala in November.
Iatas cited DuVernay’s Emmy-winning 2019’s Netflix miniseries When They See Us as well as her work leading her company Array, along with credits that include Selma, 13th and Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, the latter of which made her the highest-grossing Black woman director ever at the U.S. box office.
“Ava DuVernay is a force of nature and this is reflected in the remarkable scope and volume of her work,” said International Academy president and CEO Bruce L. “M*A*S*H,” “I Love Lucy,” “Six Feet Under,” “Beetlejuice” and “The Cosby Show.” What do these classic TV shows or films have in common? They all had a deep impact on five of today’s top TV showrunners. We discuss that and more during our “Meet the Experts” group roundtable panel with 2022 Emmy contenders.

“I love Christmas movies,” declares Gloria Calderon Kellett, the creator and executive producer of “With Love” on Amazon Prime. “Christmas is a big time for Latinos and it was the height of the pandemic. We were sort of feeling, oh, we’re probably not going to be with our families this year. That mixed with this barrage on my Instagram feed of violence against Black and brown and queer and Asian people, plus wanting so much this salve that Christmas movies provide, but don’t often provide to people of color. This is such a feel-good, beautiful genre and it really doesn’t exist for us. I didn’t just present the Christmas episode to Amazon, I presented, ‘What would it look like if we pick up this family and we follow them over the course of a year?'” We talked to Calderon Kellett as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV showrunners panel.

“I was born into a Mormon home and raised in a devout Mormon home,” reveals Dustin Lance Black, the creator, co-writer and co-executive producer of the limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven” from FX on Hulu. “As a kid I started wondering why my mother was treated so differently in this faith that, I will be frank, I really cared for. It felt like home. It’s all I knew. Those questions about why my mother was treated differently, why the church did not intervene when violence entered our home, why they seemed to place the blame at her feet. Those questions ate away at me because I wasn’t allowed to ask them.” We talked to Black as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV showrunners panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“I was so mindful that I was coming into a pre-existing, incredibly successful franchise that Ryan [Murphy] built,” explains Sarah Burgess, the co-writer and showrunner for “Impeachment: American Crime Story” on FX. “Because Ryan directed episode one, I first met him through his ideas for my script that I had written. We were supposed to start shooting this show in March of 2020, so there was a very sudden stop. Finally everything came together in the Fall of 2020 and I met him at a production meeting. He mentioned one of my favorite movies without he and I ever speaking about it, ‘The Lies of Others,’ as a visual reference and tone reference for the show. As a neurotic, self-involved writer it meant so much to me that I felt that this person read and understood the anxious tension in the script.”

The most recent “Scream” was a gory bloodbath, but that’s nothing compared to what’s coming in the franchise’s future. Cast member Jenna Ortega told Entertainment Tonight that the next installment in the long-running horror franchise will be the most aggressive and violent yet. Ortega is reprising her role of Tara Carpenter, a survivor of the most recent Ghostface attack. Clearly the masked villain isn’t done with her yet.
“Ghostface gets a lot more intimidating,” Ortega said of the “Scream 6” script. “I just read part of the script, and it just gets more and more gory. I think that this is probably the most aggressive and violent version of Ghostface we’ve ever seen, which I think will really be fun to shoot.”

For actor Lennon Parham, it wasn’t hard to get a grasp on her “Minx” character, Shelly, a stay-at-home mom who begins to embrace her inner longings in the debut season of the HBO Max comedy. “It was immediate,” she tells Gold Derby in a new webchat about her instinctual response to her character. “I read the [audition] sides first, then followed by the pilot… I was like, ‘Oh, I know who this woman is, I know how to make her funny’ — I connected to her immediately.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Season 2 of “Girls5eva” has even more hilarious, catchy tunes than Season 1, but if you listen closely they’re not quite the same. With the titular girl group being in album mode and recording their first LP in 20 years for the Property Brothers‘ Property Records, their new songs had to take on a different vibe, according to composer and executive producer Jeff Richmond.

[Warning: The above interview contains spoilers about Season 4 of “Ozark.” Watch at your own risk.]
Before the fourth and final season of “Ozark,” Amanda Marsalis had directed only two episodes of the Netflix series, the Season 2 closer (“The Gold Coast”) and fifth episode of Season 3 (“It Came From Michoacán”). So, you can imagine that learning she would helm four episodes of the drama’s 14-episode farewell installment — whose two parts debuted on January 21 and April 29, respectively — elicited quite the response from the director. “Shock, gratitude, excitement and nausea,” she enumerates while describing her initial reaction to the news in a new exclusive video interview with Gold Derby (watch above).
Of the show’s last season, Marsalis directed Episodes 8 (“The Cousin of Death”), 9 (“”Pick a God and Pray”), 12 (“Trouble the Water”) and 13 (“Mud”). Out of these, Episode 8 particularly stands out as it not only is the opener of Part 2 but also breaks with the show’s usual style and structure.

Lily Rabe takes on three very different characters this season between Showtime’s “The First Lady” and “American Horror Story: Double Feature.” In the former, the actress costars as Lorena Hickok, beloved companion of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, with the series exploring their well-documented relationship that turned romantic. “There’s this wonderful feeling of responsibility when you play anyone,” says Rabe in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby, “but certainly more so when you’re playing a real person.” Watch the full video chat above.

“I was not familiar with ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ before signing on to do this project,” admits Naomie Harris, the star of Showtime’s sci-fi drama based on the 1976 David Bowie film. “I had to educate myself about it and go back and watch the movie. The movie is a little impenetrable, it really is for proper movie buffs, but I was blown away by David Bowie’s performance.” Watch our full interview with Harris above.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we get serious about comedy as “Hacks” is set to return on May 13.

Vanity Fair unveiled a larger look at “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2, and it already feels like Shirley MacLaine will land among the Emmy nominees in the guest actress in a comedy series category next year. It’s rare that a guest actor in a television series is given an equal footing with the show’s lead, but that’s what happened back in December 2020 when Colman Domingo shared almost every single moment of the “Euphoria” special episode “Trouble Don’t Always Last” with series star Zendaya.

Live from the Emmy Awards it’s … Kate McKinnon? The “Saturday Night Live” and “Joe vs. Carole” star is your top pick to host the 2022 Emmys on NBC, according to a recent Gold Derby poll. McKinnon came in with a whopping 42 of the vote, far ahead of your second place contender, Chris Rock, at 11. Scroll down for the complete poll results.
McKinnon is a two-time Emmy winner for Best Comedy Supporting Actress for “SNL” (2016 and 2017), thanks in large part to her impersonations of political figures like Hillary Clinton. She’s been nominated a whopping eight times for NBC’s late night sketch comedy series — that’s just two shy of the record of 10 bids in this category, shared by Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”) and Loretta Swit (“M*A*S*H”).
The last time NBC produced the Emmys was 2018, and McKinnon came out on stage to introduce a special celebration of Betty White.

One is that, this show is incredibly authentic. Two of the most popular trends on Broadway in recent years are musicals based on iconic films and “jukebox musicals” that feature the songs of popular American artists. So it was almost inevitable that “Almost Famous,” a beloved film that takes place in the music industry, would eventually be turned into a musical. Cameron Crowe has been working on a stage adaptation of his film for years, and the production announced this week that it will be opening on Broadway later in 2022.
Released in the fall of 2000, “Almost Famous” was inspired by Cameron Crowe’s experiences as a teenage music journalist for Rolling Stone. While chatting with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night, Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy contender Christina Ricci did her best to debunk some popular “Yellowjackets” fan theories. Although one proposed twist for the Showtime drama shook even Ricci herself: the suggestion that the survivors of a deadly plane crash actually ate one of their friend’s babies.
“I was like, ‘Why would we eat the baby?’” she said of the idea that the Yellowjackets of the title – a New Jersey soccer team who survives a plane crash and find themselves struggling with the elements and each other – did indeed eat Shauna’s baby. That would explain some of the trauma the group faces as adults. “And then I thought, ‘Well, we are really ashamed … really haunted by what they did, so maybe we do eat the baby.’”

Pete Davidson is staying in the Universal family. The “Saturday Night Live” star, who previously mined aspects of his personal life for Universal’s “The King of Staten Island,” will star in a new comedy series for the company’s streaming platform, Peacock.
