The first iteration of the Cannes Film Festival, planned for 1939, was scuppered when Germany invaded Poland to trigger the start of World War II. But when the festival finally got off the ground in 1946, Indian cinema came out swinging. Mounted shortly after the conclusion of the war, the first “real” Cannes Film Festival featured competition entries from Billy Wilder (The Lost Weekend), Roberto Rossellini (Open City), and David Lean (Brief Encounter). In the spirit of post-war peace and reconciliation, the competition jury, headed by French historian Georges Huisman, handed the top prize — then the Grand Prix — to films from 11 of the 18 countries represented that year.
This included India, with Chetan Anand’s social-realist drama Neecha Nagar, and, for a decade at least, the country was a regular fixture in Competition. After Anand came V. Shantaram with Amar Bhoopali (1952), then Raj Kapoor with Awaara (1953), and Bimal Roy with Do Bigha Zamin...

The world changed a lot in the 20 years that "Star Trek" was off-air. The Cold War was all but over when "The Next Generation" began airing in 1987. So, it made sense to reimagine the Klingons, who during "The Original Series" had been the Ussr stand-ins to the Federation's America. Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross' behind-the-scenes book, "The 50-Year Mission," details how the "Tng" writers did so.
David Gerrold, a writer on "Tos" who returned for "Tng," pitched a Klingon First Officer on the Enterprise-d. The parallels to Spock (Leonard Nimoy) would be obvious; producer Robert H. Justman even suggested the Klingon be half-human.
But wait, Worf wasn't the first officer on the Enterprise-d. That's because this idea was vetoed by "Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry. Roddenberry did not want to use the villains from "The Original Series" — his "Tng" production bible says Klingons and Romulans are verboten. Associate producer D.C. Fontana...

The Best Throwaway Joke In The Strange New Worlds/Lower Decks Crossover Makes A Big Fan Theory Canon
This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
One of the more amusing aspects of "Star Trek" is that when a Starfleet captain meets an all-powerful deity, in some cases literal gods, they roll their eyes. "Star Trek" takes place in a post-religious world wherein old faiths have given way to a form of technology-driven benevolent humanism. When Captain Kirk (William Shatner) meets Apollo, the god is waved away as a problem that needs to be solved. When Kirk meets the Mesoamerican deity Kukulkan, he merely explains to the all-powerful serpent that humanity how outgrown the need for gods. When Kirk meets an impish trickster god named Trelane, the Squire of Gothos (William Campbell), he slaps him across the face.
The same is true of Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). When Picard meets an equally impish trickster god named Q (John De Lancie), he rolls...

We know that the final two episodes of Picard season 3 will surely be packed beyond belief with references and Trekkie surprises, but for now, in “Surrender,” the references pack a punch because they make the plot happen.
Here are the best easter eggs and references in episode 8:

The easter egg game is afoot! As was true with Picard’s easter egg bonanza from a few weeks ago, episode 8, “Surrender,” uses callbacks and references in such a way that you can’t actually figure out how the plot would work without this stuff. We know that the final two episodes of Picard season 3 will surely be packed beyond belief with references and Trekkie surprises, but for now, in “Surrender,” the references pack a punch because they make the plot happen.
Here are the best easter eggs and references in episode 8:

Apple TV+ is staying in the Julianne Moore business, and the streamer is adding even more major talent to join her. After teaming with indie studio A24 to release the neo-noir, film "Sharper" earlier this year (featuring Moore in the lead role), Apple is looking to expand their modest slate of original films with another highly-anticipated project.
Variety reports that Apple has cast Moore and rapidly rising star Sydney Sweeney (seen below in "Euphoria") in a new feature film project titled "Echo Valley." On the other side of the camera, the story comes from "Mare of Easttown" writer, producer, and creator Brad Ingelsby, and like the HBO Max series, it's set in Pennsylvania. The movie will follow Moore's character named Kate Garrett, described as "a woman reeling from a personal tragedy who spends her days boarding and training horses on the secluded and picturesque Echo Valley Farm." Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney are gearing up to play a mother-daughter duo in “Echo Valley,” an Apple Studios feature from “Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Ingelsby.
Like the acclaimed HBO series, “Echo Valley” is rooted in southeastern Pennsylvania, where a grieving woman named Kate Garrett (Moore) lives in isolation on a 22-acre farm. Her days of boarding and training horses at Echo Valley Farm are interrupted when her wayward daughter Claire (Sweeney) shows up one night, covered in someone else’s blood. As the synopsis puts it, that sets into motion “a heart-pounding thriller about just how far a mother will go to save her child.”
BAFTA-winning director Michael Pearce will helm from Ingelsby’s script, developed with Michael Pruss. Ridley Scott will produce through his banner Scott Free, along with Pruss and Ingelsby. Kevin Walsh will produce for The Walsh Company under his multiyear deal with Apple TV...

“These three films, they’re all masterful. They’re extraordinary films, and they’re actually quite different.” It’s mid-July in Switzerland and Todd Haynes is talking melodrama: “The three masterworks for me, and to see them at a festival like Locarno, which is very rare, are Written on The Wind, Imitation of Life, and All That Heaven Allows.” Perhaps more than even the cinema of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Todd Haynes’ films have so often intertwined with those of the late Douglas Sirk, a director whose peerless studio work from the 1940s and 1950s have been a rich source of aesthetic and emotional inspiration, most clearly seen in Haynes’ 2002 masterpiece Far From Heaven.
“Imitation of Life is a film of such remarkable resonance,” Haynes explains on a warm summer morning in the Hotel Belvedere. “I think its themes of race and pretending, of passing, and misperceptions of what you are and who you are,...

They join an ensemble which also includes the previously announced Jake Manley, Adeline Rudolph, Francesca Reale, Laurence O’Fuarain, Nicholas Hamilton, Javier Botet, Kai Caster and Shane Paul McGhie.
The film currently in production in Bulgaria is based on the bestselling book of the same name by David Morrell, which Stephen Susco adapted for the screen. It tells the story of a group of young urban explorers who plan to investigate an old, boarded-up, seemingly abandoned hotel, only to encounter danger at every turn in the form of a competing group of hostile urban explorers seeking to find a legendary hidden treasure – as well as a supernatural being who wreaks havoc on all.

Since “The Help” hit theaters in 2011, four actresses have won Oscars, including one for “The Help,” and that hot streak can continue this year. Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) and Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”) earned nominations Tuesday for their respective lead and supporting performances, so the grand total could be six by the end of Oscar night.
The four women who’ve won Oscars since “The Help’s” release are Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Allison Janney. Spencer, Chastain and Davis were all nominated for “The Help,” with Spencer beating Chastain in supporting, while Davis lost to Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”) in lead. Five years later, Davis won Best Supporting Actress for “Fences” and Stone won Best Actress for “La La Land.” The very next year, Janney nabbed Best Supporting Actress honors for “I, Tonya,” and we were treated to this selfie.

The striking opening shot of Abner Benaim’s plangent drama “Plaza Catedral” induces slight vertigo. The camera rises on an elevator attached to the outside of a partially built skyscraper, looking out across Panama City’s high-rise apartment complexes, and eventually, at the bay beyond. It should be uplifting, but a chilly, murmured voiceover and the opening drone of Matthew Herbert’s rueful score, are like the rainclouds that edge the blue sky in foreboding gray. The view ascends, but it evokes a sinking feeling.
The voice belongs to Alicia, who introduces herself and speaks elliptically, in her emotionless, removed way, of a loss she has suffered in her recent past, that has put her at odds with the world around her. She is an architect by training but a salesperson for an upscale property developer by profession, hence her visit to this half-finished penthouse, with the young family who are thinking of buying it.

Michael Pearce wanted to direct a very specific kind of story as a follow-up to “Beast,” his acclaimed first feature. The writer-director found the script for “Encounter” by Joe Barton, which tells the story of a war veteran who takes his two sons on a trip to protect them from an alien threat, and realized it was exactly what he was looking for. “I was trying to find something that was part character portrait and part elevated genre film,” says Pearce in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It had all the fun genre stuff but it was really a connection to the characters that drew me in.” Watch the full interview above.
There were a number of influences running through Pearce’s mind while developing “Encounter,” from the paranoia sci-fi elements of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” to the grounded family story of “Paris, Texas.” He and cinematographer...

Designed as a road movie, ‘Encounter’ streaming on Amazon is a simple but meticulously crafted psychodrama with elements of sci-fi and thrills thrown in fair measure. The film begins on a mysterious and creepy note with a meteorite hitting planet Earth which causes an eerie chain reaction within the insect kingdom. The insects turn carnivorous, […]...

“Encounter” is a weird sci-fi/drama hybrid and I’m all here for it. Director Michael Pearce (“Beast”) started with sci-fi tropes then pull the cliches off and created searing Father-Sons drama with the fantastic Riz Ahmed as the dad to two fantastic child actors, Lucian-River Chauhan, and Aditya Geddada. I spent some time with the actors

The new Amazon Studios film, Encounter, is a taut and thought-provoking drama, directed by Michael Pearce that stars Oscar-nominated actor Riz Ahmed. The movie also features young actors Lucian-River Chauhan and Aditya Geddada, as well as Octavia Spencer and Rory Cochrane in smaller, yet pivotal roles.
Encounter is a gripping story of decorated Marine Malik Kahn’s mission to save Jay and Bobby’s two young sons from a mysterious threat. On their perilous journey, … well, I don’t want to spoil the film; the movie Has to be experienced on screen!
Encounter combines elements of different genres, including a full-on science fiction take, a psychological thriller, and a moving family drama that is also full of action and scary mysteries. It is amazing how the director seamlessly brought all these different modes of filmmaking together to create a riveting, edge-of-your-seat-omg-what-happens-next-will-Malik-Jay-and-Bobby-be-ok, heart-pounding, compelling film-watching experience.

Riz Ahmed turns in another deeply-felt performance in the new Amazon film “Encounter.” The actor stars as Malik, a veteran who takes his two sons on a road trip while battling an alien threat. Ahmed fully commits himself to transforming into a father from the South, who is also battling his own psychological demons. While the film initially presents itself as a sci-fi drama, it gradually reveals itself to be something far more grounded, and Ahmed was taken by this subversion of expectations. “It feels so urgent,” says Ahmed in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It’s about the world we’re in right now.” Watch the full interview above.
Much like his previous acclaimed role in “Sound of Metal,” Ahmed plunged deep into his “Encounter” character, getting in shape physically and speaking with special force veterans to get into Malik’s mindset. He had conversations with multiple active servicemen,...
