Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho was on hand to present an award to Im Kwon-taek as part of the Wednesday night opening ceremony of the Busan International Film Festival. Global streaming giant Netflix has teamed with South Korea’s largest cinema chain Cj Cgv to give theatrical releases to seven Netflix Original movies. The Korean-language titles will be given a limited 13-day run in 80 Cgv multiplexes.
The initiative, branded as ‘NetFic,’ is the latest effort by the film industry to stimulate box office in Korea, where the exhibition and distribution sectors in Korea have been badly shaken by the impact of Covid-19. Audiences have been slow to return to in-person screenings and many high-profile film releases have been postponed or canceled as a result.
Netflix and other streaming platforms have been able to take advantage of the malaise and license some of the disrupted titles.
Among the titles in the NetFic season are “Time to Hunt,” a futuristic action thriller which had its world premiere at the 2020 Berlin festival but abandoned its theatrical plans during the first wave of the coronavirus.

Compared with the U.S. or European countries, South Korea’s infection and death toll from Covid-19 was small. But the disease has had an outsize impact transforming the entertainment industry.
Film producers and distributors are currently seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, and are busily repopulating the late summer distribution calendar. But the virus has hastened the systemic shift to a more digital future.
In pre-covid times, film-mad fans meant Korea had one of the world’s highest per-capita cinema attendance rates and the mid-sized country the world’s fourth-largest box office. And after “Parasite” and Korean-language, U.S.-made “Minari” scored at Oscars and resonated with audiences worldwide, there has been renewed interest in Korean movies, at levels not seen since the naughties.
At first, Korea seemed to be handling the pandemic well, through isolation and testing, and in summer 2020, cinemas were able to welcome back major commercial movies.

Tradition is just an empty word in the world of gangsters, and the same could be said also for the world of film distribution. One might expect that a genre fare with an elite festival premiere should end up on the regular repertoire in movie theatres, regionally if not worldwide, but Park Hoon-jung’s “Night in Paradise” landed on Netflix instead earlier this year. We might blame it on the pandemic, but the fact is that the streaming services are expanding regardless of it.
As a screenwriter, Park is best known for his work with Kim Jee-won on the iconic serial killer flick “I Saw the Devil” (2010), but as a director, his most breakthrough work would be his second feature, “New World” (2013). A muscular and unflinching Korean filmmaker with a flair for operatic ultra-violence, Park Hoon-jung does at least one thing better than anyone else on the planet: Shoot legions of suit-wearing gangsters beating the absolute shit out of each other. After scripting 2010’s “I Saw the Devil” and pioneering his particular brand of Musou-inspired mayhem as the director of “The Showdown” the next year, Park came into his own with 2013’s “New World,” a bruising and brilliant mob epic that spends much of its 134-minute run time stuffing Armani-slick henchmen into confined spaces with the chaotic energy of a child pouring a gallon of milk into a teacup. It’s as if someone took the infamous hallway fight from “Oldboy” and stretched it into a crime saga worthy of comparison to “Goodfellas.”
“Night in Paradise” doesn’t play against Park’s strengths — this is, at heart, — but it doesn’t want to rely on them either.

After the abysmal year for cinema that 2020 was, one can only hope that 2021 proves to be a lot better for films the world over. While the coronavirus situation ebbs and flows in various places, film releases are getting more and more frequent. Even if studios are still slightly hesitant to release some tentpole films, audiences are slowly finding their way back into the theatres.
Due to the delay in production and release on several projects last year, films that would otherwise have released back them are only now beginning to find their way into theatres or on Ott platforms, while some studios have even decided to indefinitely postpone production on some major titles. As a result, our list of Most Anticipated Korean Films of 2020 (which has been updated with the status of each project to the best of our knowledge) still remains valid and can be checked out to see...

Netflix is the king of the streaming world until proven otherwise. But in recent months the streamer’s lists of new releases have looked relatively sparse as competing media conglomerates remove their titles from Netflix’s library. With its list of new releases for April 2021, however, Netflix appears to have its original production machine operating at high capacity once again.
There are plenty of intriguing Netflix original series and films this month. The one that appears to have the highest blockbuster potential though is the series Shadow and Bone on April 23. Shadow and Bone is adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse trilogy and should bring another compelling sci-fi/fantasy universe to the streaming world.

Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer Are Superhero Best Friends in Netflix’s ‘Thunder Force’ Trailer
Netflix released the official trailer for “Thunder Force,” which stars Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer as two best friends with newly acquired superpowers. The film is set to make its streaming debut on April 9.
The superhero comedy is directed by Ben Falcone, who previously worked with McCarthy on films such as “Tammy,” “The Boss,” “Life of the Party” and HBO Max’s “Superintelligence.” His new film is expected to poke fun at comic book movie tropes while delivering some good-hearted laughs.
The trailer sees Lydia (McCarthy) reunite with her childhood best friend, Emily Stanton (Spencer), a successful scientist that has created technology that grants ordinary people superpowers. After being told not to touch anything, McCarthy accidentally takes the only formula for super strength, unwillingly creating the first real-life superhero team. When a new villain known as “The King” (Bobby Cannavale) arrives in town, it’s up to the Thunder Force...

A new Park hoon-jung feature release is always a highly anticipated event and it becomes doubly exciting when his newest work “Night In Paradise” just happens to be a return to the gangster genre for him. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and now we get a first trailer to see if the director of “New World” can replicate the success he had with his directorial debut yet again in the same genre.
Not much is known about the synopsise except that the story sees a gangster played by Um Tae-goo (“My Punch-Drunk Boxer“) go to Jeju Island to hide, where he meets Jeon Yeo-bin’s (“After My Death“) Jae-yeon, while several other gangsters, including the mob boss portrayed by Cha Seung-won (“Believer“). While no exact date is finalised, a 2020 release is confirmed, with a wide international release expected.
