One group after another, they’ve been congregating over Zoom in support of Kamala Harris’ presidential run: Women, men, Swifties, “White Dudes,” Bob Dylan fans. So why not “Deadheads for Kamala”?
Although it sounds like a conservative talk-radio wisecrack, such a confab will take place on Aug. 13, in the hopes of bringing together new and vintage Dead fans as another potential voting bloc for Harris. The meeting was the brainchild of broadcaster Steven Leventhal, who owns the streaming radio station Acid Flashback Radio and has been a Deadhead since 1985. After...

Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report today that new genre studio Welcome Villain Films’ first original production, previously known as Untitled Last Shift Reboot, has a new name
The official title treatment and new film stills have been unveiled for the film, now titled Malum, along with an announced Spring 2023 nationwide theatrical release.
Helmed by director Anthony Diblasi and co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, the same creative team behind 2014’s Last Shift, Malum reimagines the original critically-acclaimed horror hit and expands the filmmakers vision of nightmare-inducing terror.
“With this new film, we really wanted it to stand on its own, and giving it a new title absolutely does that,” says filmmaker Anthony Diblasi. “The name ‘Malum’ is not only a major element of the plot and how things unfold, but that word, in some of the oldest languages in history, means ‘evil’ and ‘an offense against right or law,’ which seamlessly ties into the twisted,...

Only eight years have gone by since the release of director Anthony Diblasi’s well-received horror feature Last Shift – but the filmmaker has already decided to return to the concept for an “expanded reimagining” that recently wrapped production. Jessica Sula (Split) stars in the currently untitled reimagining, which is coming to us from Welcome Villain Films. This is the company’s first feature.
The Last Shift reimagining centers on
a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult. Throughout the night, she finds herself barraged by terrifying supernatural events while unveiling the truth behind her family’s twisted past. This reimagining takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit and flips it on its head, thrusting viewers into a relentless, adrenaline-fueled, bloody cult nightmare.

“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and “Rear Window” might not be the most obvious reference points to exist in harmony, but “The Wretched” finds an amusing way to let them jam together. The sophomore efforts from sibling directors Brett and Drew Pierce (who go by “the Pierce brothers”) is a fun eco-horror ride about a small lakeside community overtaken by root monsters, juggling the inherent silliness of that conceit with a surprising amount of subtlety, providing

Something Derivative This Way Comes: The Pierce Bros. More Wicker than Wicked in Witchy Thriller
The dead aren’t so much evil in The Wretched, the highly polished sophomore effort from directing brothers Brett and Drew T. Pierce, as they are covetous of pricey lakeshore property. Or so one could assume for the motivation of the witches lurking in the woods from the duo who last tackled zombies with their 2011 debut Deadheads.

C’mon film fans. let’s shake off the stuck-at-home isolation blues with this week’s new release. Yup, it’s not an “indie” full of despair and drama. So, it’s a rollicking comedy? Well..uh uh. A toe-tappin’ musical, perhaps?, Nah…it’s a horror flick. Well. at least you can feel good that all the weirdness isn’t directed at you as you stare out the window. And this is indeed an independent film, another in the subgenre of “art-house” horror led by The Witch, The Babadook, and the very recent The Other Lamb, though, in spirit, it may be closest to the retro thrills of It Follows. This one owes a lot to that 70s homage, though it has more of the 1980’s thriller vibe of the Netflix hit “Stranger Things”. So with all the real-world scares outside can The Wretched deliver the shivers?

Getting out early can be an advantage in the documentary race, which is often front loaded at January’s Sundance Film Festival. While a raft of movies made their mark, the question is which ones can sustain support through the end of the year.
Among that festival’s breakouts were three Syria documentaries. Daring and timely “City of Ghosts” (July 14, A & E/Amazon Studios), which is Matthew Heineman’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated border drug war thriller “Cartel Land,” will get a major push. Any footage from Syria came from the fearless Raqqa journalists he tracked through Turkey and Germany, where they discover that they are not necessarily safe — anywhere.
It remains to be seen if there will be room for more than one Syrian documentary. HBO Documentary Films is forgoing Emmy consideration for “Winter on Fire” nominee Evgeny Afineevsky’s harrowing “Cries From Syria” (March 10, HBO), planning an Oscar push this fall.

"We're the same as you, you're the same as us." Get ready to rock 'n roll! Amazon Studios has debuted a full-length trailer for the documentary Long Strange Trip, an extensive look into the history and music of the iconic rock band known as the Grateful Dead. "Artfully assembling candid interviews with the band, road crew, family members and notable Deadheads," director Amir Bar-Lev "reveals the untold history of the Dead and the freewheeling psychedelic subculture that sprouted up around it." Featuring interviews and footage of Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir; and executive produced by Martin Scorsese. There's lots of footage from their concerts, plus never-before-seen interviews and photos for Dead Heads (and newbies) to enjoy. This premiered at Sundance and also played at SXSW and seems like another definitive music doc for everyone to appreciate, even if you're not the biggest fan. Dive right in.

Long Strange TripDear Josh,If there's one minor upside to Sundance, it's that the films typically aren't very long. Since the festival is dedicated to indie film—or whatever mutated strain that it's become in recent years—runtimes typically average around 90 minutes, sometimes less. (This certainly isn't Cannes, where three-hour art films are the norm.) So when I was making my schedule, Amir Bar-Lev’s four-hour Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip immediately stood out. (It apparently did so for a lot of other critics, too, given that this was, by far, the most sparsely attended press screening I went to.)Split into six “acts” (plus an intermission), the film chronicles the Grateful Dead from their start in the 1960s (“Act I: It's Alive!”) to the death of founding member Jerry Garcia in 1995 (“Act VI: It Becomes Everything”). Given the wealth of detail in the film—which covers everything from their time in Haight Ashbury,...

The competition for the 26th spot on the ABCs of Death 2 horror anthology is in full swing. Several directors have submitted their films for the top spot of being included in the future release of this film. Todd E. Freeman (Cell Count) has thrown his hat in the ring and his film is titled "M is for Marriage." This short film stars Natalie Victoria (Deadheads) and Jeffree Newman. The film is a disturbing one and it is hosted below, in its entirety. The film's story involves bio-transference psychology and an angry patient. This patient is able to transfer some of her hate, for her husband, onto the psychologist and her darker emotions appear as lesions, on the counsellour. The ending is a blood splattering good time. Fans of Todd E. Freeman or of the short film can help this title win the competition. Viewers simply need to click like on...

It seemed rather fitting that we hit the set of writer, director and producer Thomas J. Churchill’s ambitious zombie feature Lazarus on Easter Sunday, and we’re glad we did.
Battling the throngs of Sunday worshippers who’d clogged Los Angeles’ concrete arteries for Hollywood Bowl’s Easter Mass, we made our way to Tarzana, CA, where filmmaker Churchill had set up shop at Waggin’ Tails Lounge, a dog grooming facility owned by his cousin, Kathie Fiorillo. Shooting day twelve of thirteen on the Canon 5D, Churchill was prepping a scene which would feature the re-animation of the dead, and while it may be poised to enter the already bloated sub-genre of independent zombie cinema, readers, do please take note: Lazarus seems to be hell-bent on offering an entirely fresh take.

This past Saturday (10/20) this writer, along with actresses Natalie Victoria (DeadHeads) and Carlee Baker (The Woman)' made the drive from Hollywood to Temecula, CA, to participate in Run For Your Lives, a zombie-infested 5K obstacle course race and lived to tell about it.
Read on for photos and more!
A national phenomenon, this past weekend’s Run For Your Lives event was set up at Vail Lake, Temecula, and in addition to the well-organized race, it included live bands, food and alchohol vendors and a Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines booth (the film streets tomorrow, 10/23, on DVD and Blu-ray via Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment), where filmmaker Declan O’Brien spent some time signing materials after completing his heat (no lie, I had to talk him into the former, and as it turned out, he was happy I did).
So how does Run For Your Lives work? It’s pretty straightforward.

Anyone who grew up watching George Romero movies on latenight TV yet bemoans the lack of a true successor to ReAnimator or Return of the Living Dead should have a good time with Deadheads which has a ton of references to the former and all the splattery laughs of the latter.
