1st one is horrible but the next one improves

While The Splinter is a disgusting episode, I personally had no problem with Slide Whistle Stooges. It's clever and felt like a season 5 episode rather than one from season 6.

Slide Whistle Stooges!
ghost0ne1 April 2022
I'll keep this short. I thought the splinter story was alright although it was pretty gross. But I was actually surprised by the second one. I found myself smiling and I didn't stop till the end. Who knew slide whistles could be used as sound effects for practically everything! From drinking soda through a straw to driving off a cliff! It makes me want to buy a slide whistle!

Forever ingrained in my brain... in a bad way
wildcatian20 May 2021
When I was five, I watched the first part of this episode and was horrified by the splinter. Ever since then, the image of the splinter coming out of the flesh has been deeply ingrained in my brain. The second part of this episode isn't too awful but is very generic and hardly improves the episode. This episode and a few episodes from this season demonstrate why season 6 is when SpongeBob took a turn for the worse.

The Splinter is a disgusting experience filled with vomit-worthy imagery and a filler-reliant story. Overall, even kids who are such crazy SpongeBob fans are bound to get traumatised by this one.

Disgusting
texanchild1 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The imagery in The Splinter is downright awful! It should've been scrapped from the beginning. No child should have to see this vile gore. Thankfully, Slide Whistle Stooges revives this disaster. It improves it slightly; overall, it's still very blatantly disgusting. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Horrifying

I rewatched this as an adult and it's still just as disturbing and disgusting. I don't know how this episode can be aimed at children at all. The second part Slide Whistle Stooges however is a good episode but doesn't make up for the the splinter one bit.

Unwatchable
michimaps18 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, The Splinter, while disgusting, at least I could sit through it. Slide Whistle Stooges, on the other hand, was unwatchable. It's an episode about SpongeBob and Patrick annoying Squidward. Of course, it also means annoying the audience. This concept worked in Bubblestand because there were short periods pf hammering in the beginning of the episode. This is just the shrill, grating noises of slide whistles throughout the entire episode. Squidward goes insane, and rides a truck off of a cliff. He ends up in the hospital with a slide whistle in his throat. Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick are going around the hospital, playing their slide whistles in front of the sick and dying, and everyone starts laughing like it's the most hilarious thing in the world. If I were in the ER about to die, I would not want two idiots playing their annoying slide whistles in my face to be the last thing I experience. I never want to experience that. That's why I gave up halfway through the episode, and looked up the rest of the plot on the Internet.

I dont know why people hate this
mattschram23 April 2023
This episode is pinnacle SpongeBob Squarepants. Everything that we know and love about old SpongeBob is included in this episode. Surprising gore and good humor throughout is why I miss the old Spongebob. This takes me back to better times of when I was a child and this SpongeBob exsited. This episode may be a bit violent and gross for viewers with stomachs not as strong as mine. It goes to show the level of writing and talent Hollywood had prior to the millennial invasion. To me, it is one of the last pieces of golden age Nickelodeon from the 90s that was still around during the time if this episode. I love this episode and hope everyone who is a fan of SpongeBob sees this.

Not bad, and extremely over hated.

Warning: Spoilers
Whenever I see American critics(🇭🇺!) discuss gross out humor in children's programming it's made out to be a hellish sin(when reviewing-T. A. W. O. G.'s:"the box"internet critic:"cr martin"grinds to a halt for discussion) I won't argue it can't be done wrong, but to compare it to squidward's toenail removal is woefully disengenuous and petty for three reasons:-1:it's EXAGGERATED. 2:it's not lingered on!(toenail:NEVERENDING CLOSE UP!😡) 3:the characters REACT APPROPRIATELY!😡 Again compared to the toenail where only squidward reacts it's fare more respectful. I need to reiterate I'm not defending gross out humor, but like any aspect of writing it needs to be judged on a"case by case"basis, because if we demonize an entire subjectmatter simply for instances of bad execution we limit the type of stories that can be told, ie:"captain planet is a bad enviromentalist cartoon so All enviromentalist cartoons are bad"!

Sure, it was gross, but it wasn't unwatchable. I actually found myself laughing a few times. This episode doesn't deserve the hate it gets, just like a pal for Gary and one coarse meal.

Warning: Spoilers
I cannot believe how disgusting and mean-spirited The Splinter is. It's like Season 6 has a big problem with the disgusting humor (looks at Aaron Springer's storyboarding). And almost everyone was mean to poor SpongeBob. Squidward was no help and Patrick only made things worse. The only good part was the ending because Mr. Krabs helped SpongeBob and Squidward got karma for his actions.

Do you know what made me upset the most?

Remember that part in Graveyard Shift where SpongeBob was literally ripping his arms out? Well guess what? THEY GREW BACK! Why couldn't he just remove the arm that had the splinter? We knew it would've grown back! This episode was just a mess.

OH NO
jaf-9011912 May 2024
The Splinter is just disgusting, I think there are worse episodes, SpongeBob acts kind of in character, but the Splinter is just to gross, plus Patrick acts like a jerk. The sister episode is not much better. In fact it might be worse. It's just a generic annoy squidward episode. It's not as bad as Squid's Visit or Chior boys, but still bad. A couple of the Slide Whistle gags were ok but still don't watch either of these episodes. There's also Mr Krabs snifing a butt out of coustmer for money. If you remove the gross factor the Splinter is just boring. These episodes are just bad and avoid them.

1st episode disgusting and both of these terrible
mwcrunner6 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
2 more terrible episodes of SpongeBob I'm reviewing here. The Splinter is very gross and disgusting and it should never be on the air again. I mean who wants to see huge pussy wound from a splinter? Nobody that's who. Also the slide whistle episode is pointless and kind of annoying. I mean this is another Squidward torture porn cause in the end Squidward ends up with the slide whistle in his throat. SpongeBob has definitely seen better days and should just end while its ahead. The Splinter is more disgusting then that Powerpuff Girls episode Sun Scream where the girls get sun burnt and are in so much pain until the Professor gives them a special formula that made their sunburn peel off which is also disgusting and disturbing. Also all these newer writers of SpongeBob should just hang their heads in shame for writing these atrocities.

Disgusting. I wish I could give less than one star.

Warning: Spoilers
This deserves a negative amount of stars. The Splinter is THAT bad. It's nothing but gross and disgusting, demented and horrid imagery and I'm amazed the animators could have even had the guts to create it. It's almost as filthy or maybe even worse than an episode of Happy Tree Friend's,it's THAT bad. Do NOT watch this. I felt physically sick just watching it and wanted to throw up. Don't let your children watch this. These writers have a sick mind and this show isn't funny or entertaining in the slightest anymore. It's pretty much the equivalent to Family Guy now - a show that should just die out and ages very badly. I hope this episode gets banned from airing. It's that gruesome and violent.

First one is awful, second one is tolerable
themysterybar1 May 2019
The Splinter is truly a evil, disgusting episode. There is no redeeming qualities to be seen in this entire episode. Use your remote to skip to the next episode rather than watch 11 minutes of a dumpster fire. Patrick just makes it WAY worse too. He's super mean in first episode and is cocky and bratty too! Just really makes you wonder why they're "friends."

Slide Whistle Stooges is a way better episode that even I rewatch sometimes. It's pretty fun and it reminds me of episodes like Naughty Nautical Neighbors and Good Neighbors, which are episodes I really like. I can see why you can dislike this episode, but overall it just feels like a mid ranking season five episode.

Do not watch the first episode but do watch the second one. That is my personal tip for anyone who dare watch this filth. Giving it a 4/10 because the second one was okay.

Warning: Spoilers
The Splinter:

After retrieving a spatula from the ceiling, SpongeBob accidentally slips and gets a splinter into his thumb.

Right from the start, something feels very off about this one. We've seen SpongeBob excited over work many times, and usually I really enjoy seeing him get ready for another productive day. I don't know what it is about this one though, but he acts a lot more annoying than usual. He's so hyperactive that you wonder if he had any crack with his coffee this time. After that we are treated to a pointless scene where his spatula gets stuck in the ceiling and he has to retrieve it. Sure it leads into the main story, but I don't think it would've been impossible to get to it more effectively.

Once we get to the infamous splinter part is when things go even more downhill. Did you enjoy seeing SpongeBob scratch himself constantly in Fungus Among Us? Well, you are gonna love seeing him writhe in agony over his splinter throughout. I actually consider this instance even worse since the pacing is so agonizingly sloooooow throughout. Scenes just feel like they go on and on with no real punchline to them.

Patrick being an idiot doctor in Suds was perfect since while he absolutely made the problem worse, he genuinely cared about solving his friend's problem, and at least seemed to know what he wanted help with. This time he spent what must be a half minute having SpongeBob's foot in his mouth for no apparent reason. Then he drives a stake into the splinter (What did you think you were dealing with, a freaking vampire?) which unsurprisingly worsens the problem. But instead of realizing his mistake he just dismissively tells him the appointment is over and to call him later if he still can. Not only does none of this strike to me as remotely funny, but he comes off like an uncaring jerk.

After that we get Squidward manipulating SpongeBob into thinking Mr. Krabs is gonna get mad and fire him if he sees he has a splinter. This might have been funny had it been accompanied by any clever jokes, but instead it's boring and kinda unpleasant. Squidward is written too sadistic for any of it to feel natural, so it just ends up being frustrating.

Mr. Krabs confronts SpongeBob, so he's forced to reveal the giant throbbing splinter. Carefully, Krabs removes it and is met by confetti, then a sudden spray of disgusting green pus gushes out. If this alone was supposed to make me laugh, the irony is lost on me.

The final joke with Squidward injuring himself to get a workers compensation was pretty funny, and I liked SpongeBob's reaction to Squidward's note telling him he's annoying, but other than there is not much in the source of humor.

And another thing, the animation was really bad as well. For the first four episodes of season 6 it looked fine, but here the facial expressions were weird in a bad way several times, not to mention the unfunny gross visuals.

In short, The Splinter doesn't seem to have much reason to exist other than making you cringe.

Slide Whistle Stooges:

Discovering the fun of slide whistles, SpongeBob and Patrick start playing them everywhere, driving their neighbor Squidward totally insane.

Okay, hear me out. The Splinter is really awful, and definitely one of the dullest that the show has to offer. And yet I still consider Slide Whistle Stooges even worse. Why? Well...

The biggest problem are the actual slide whistles. Not only do they play damn near constant in every single scene, but every joke is exactly the same. Someone does something or walks and sudden slide whistle noises follow. Hey, normal mundane activities are not supposed to sound like slide whistles! Funny, right? No. Not even close.

Secondly, SpongeBob and Patrick are unlikable beyond belief. No matter how many times they get told to stop playing their stupid whistles, they won't listen. In fact, they are trying to FORCE him to play along. He does so eventually, but what the writers behind this story don't seem to understand is that what made Squidward joining the fun so compelling in past episodes is that despite how much he pretended to find their activities lame, he actually got a bit curious and couldn't help but go play their games anyway. This time however, he only starts playing the slide whistle after constantly being harrassed and pretty much baited into doing it.

Thirdly, when he starts playing the slide whistle himself the jokes still play out the exact same. He pulls the same stupid pranks as his idiot neighbors, and we even get a repeated gag with another character flipping through a book and being met by slide whistle sound effects.

As Squidward continue these shenanigans, all the Bikini Bottom citizens get pissed and try to get him to knock it off. While this isn't funny by any means, it's understandable they are annoyed. However, cheering when he possibly crashes to his *death*? I don't have anything against dark humor, but this is just so dumb that it's not even funny. Even for Bikini Bottom that's an unusually cruel reaction.

Finally, we cut to the hospital, where Squidward somehow got saved by the slide whistle stuck in throat (which makes no fu-cking sense whatsoever), that the doctor can't remove because he's terrible at his job, I guess. Then, as if I wasn't already sick of Sponge and Pat's moronic antics, they decide to "cheer him up" by playing slide whistles again! CAN'T YOU IDIOTS SEE THAT SLIDE WHISTLES HAVE DONE NOTHING GOOD FOR HIM? I can't even believe what I'm watching at this point. They also go around harrassing everyone else at the hospital, which for some inexplicable reason is met by uproarious laughter. How come that all of them are okay with those two playing slide whistles, but not Squidward? What a bunch of hideous hypocrites.

Easily one of the worst episodes ever, especially due to Slide Whistle Stooges.

The Splinter was funny for boys and Slide whistle stooges was very funny
g-3233726 May 2023
Why do people think Paul Tibbitt ruined SpongeBob? He just made it funnier. The slide whistle in random scenes is very funny and SpongeBob's splinter actually vanished in the end and he was happy. Stephen hillenburg was really funny in the first 3 seasons, then Paul Tibbitt did just as phenomenal as him. When you hit season 9, it just sucks, Why did Stephen Hillenburg come back on the show in seasons 10 & 11. Anyways, this episode is just misunderstood and driving with a misleading hate. I hope that they could do more episodes like this. Now it's time for my review for the both of the episodes : The Splinter 9/10 Slide whistle stooges 10/10.

The Splinter is terrible and its proves why this awful show should've been cancelled...
hsp-5486829 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really hate The Splinter. Let's get into the review on why I hate this episode: 1. It's a lackluster plot. It involves Spongebob getting a splinter in his thumb and he has to get it out. 2. The imagery. The majority of the imagery is disgusting to look at in this episode. Like at he end, Spongebob's thumb is bulging and you can see veins popping out of the thumb. Mr. Krabs pulls out the splinter and then confetti comes out of Spongebob's thumb and then a few seconds later, a whole bunch of pus sprays all over Mr. Krabs' face and then Spongebob's thumb is cured. 3. This is a Patrick's a Prick episode. In one scene, we see Patrick trying to help Spongebob but then being the idiot he is, he hammers the splinter further into Spongebob's thumb and infecting Spongebob's thumb with garbage turning into a giant gangrenous abomination. And that's pretty much it. Good lord, if this episode ever airs again, you're gonna have to bring a bag to throw up in, or turn off the tv, or change the channel to something you like. Overall 1/10 -1000/10

The Splinter has honestly never grossed me out and I don't know how. I just found it boring.

Slide Whistle Stooges was pretty funny to me even though Spongebob and Patrick were annoying at times and Squidward was a savage.

The Splinter

I enjoy this episode because everything is so dramatic. I don't mind when Spongebob's thumb gets bigger. Even though it's kind of gross. I liked when Patrick pretends to be a doctor. This will entertain kids. 6/10 stars.

Slide Whistle Stooges

I don't understand why people don't like this episode. It's hilarious. Spongebob and Patrick constantly annoys squidward with slide whistles. I enjoy the ending as well. 10/10 stars
