Not All That Enlightening
Hitchcoc29 December 2023
This episode hones in the trials of Prince William and his early college days. But most significant it introduces us to Kate Middleton who will become his wife eventually. What is most striking here again is the constant pressure from the press. The poor guy can't leave his old friends because he is always looking over his shoulder. He is also followed by that personal aide. We are also made privy to the Middleton's who are portrayed as a Type A family which gets what it wants. Their daughter is becoming a pawn ins their upwardly mobile game. It's easy to think someone so rich and so admired could really have problems, but it is the case. We are also given a look at Prince Harry, the second guy, who has issues of his own. I agree that he seems much too old to be the younger brother. HIs is an interesting case, certainly.

So cringe

I loved The Crown from the beginning. I don't know if it's because it's portraying our time and it's too close to home, or something else but this episode is really cringe. I have to say they didn't shy off reminding everyone how Mrs Middletown actually schemed to see Kate and William getting closer to each other... But lucky for Kate, after all these years, she seemed to be right for the job (future queen) and seems still happy in the royal family.

I like how they show Harry (they might have took from his memoir). It's a good reminder that the second child treatment in the Windsor family. (Margaret... Harry... the sad life of a spare child)

How many more character assassinations?

What started out as a nice story quickly descends in to another ridiculous Netflix teen drama. I can overlook many of the creative liberties the show has taken but unfortunately this episode is just plain nasty. Why is Netflix so obsessed with creating bottom barrel teen dramas? They did it with the Witcher series now they've even had a pop at The Royals. This silly will they won't they get together storyline? Not to mention the ridiculous defamation of Kates poor mum. Turning her in to some evil scheming mother who's pimping her daughter out since a chance encounter when they were children. Complete absurd. Credit to the actor who portrays Williams struggle and turmoil with wanting a normal Uni life and being a Royal. It's a shame the episode didn't focus on this more really.

Absolute drivel

After a brilliant episode with Ruritania, The Crown has hit an all time low of writing fantasy. Of course, the writers had to make the vast majority of it up, as Prince William's time at St. Andrews was largely private. However, a few details are known, yet the Netflix writers have decided to ignore these and fabricated a whole new narrative.

I particularly hate the way Carol Middleton is portrayed as a manipulative, conniving woman. Really not a nice person, who has orchestrated a set up between Catherine and William. What nonsense!

Probably the only believable part is how Catherine enjoyed a fun Christmas, but William had to listen to Aunt Margaret playing Christmas tunes on the piano!

Tough life

I usually don't watch this type of show but the wifey likes it, so I watched it with her. The Crown has some good episodes but this isn''t one of them. Maybe because the "young" royals are pretty ordinary and not royal enough to represent an institution on the way out?

Anyway, in this episode the meddling Mrs. Middletown does her best to push Kate into William's arms. That may or not have been the case, but ultimately the decision to get married was theirs, so whatever meddling went on wouldn't have worked without the pair's consent.

Way more annoying was the cringey Harry, feeling so sorry for himself. Sure it must very tough to have a lot of money and no job to do. Whose fault it is if he cannot find a reason to live except petty revenge? Everybody else's but his, according to his point of view. Despicable.
