Film Lab Presents SOS, a great social commentary segment on everyday racism towards Asian Americans By Shing Chung
This fall I started watching the 13th season of the TV series Film Lab Presents on Friday nights and the episodes have been a blast for me quarantining at home. The series showcases a variety of Asian American stories of contemporary drama, comedy, and everything in between. Lots of Asian American faces in these contents! The show is produced by the Film Lab, a non-profit that works to promote, support and create racial and gender parity in entertainment media.
Your Second of Silly features some great clips demonstrating all types of casual racism in sarcasm and humor filled scenarios. Namely, the short about Asian American accent really hammers home the limited stereotypes that Asian actors are being asked to fit into. On a grander scale in our everyday society, minorities such as Asian Americans deal with these microaggressions on a day-to-day basis.
The Your Second of Silly segment touched on other issues like women being cat-called on streets and environmental issues. The audience would particularly enjoy the satirical tone of these sketches and how some of the jokes are actually aimed at ourselves for always righteously accusing others, when in fact, we are the ones guilty as well. Jennifer Betit Yen's character in the clip "Canada Goose Sucks Donkey Balls" is extremely relatable as we all have a friend or know someone who is just like that.
