The show became infamous among paleontologists for deliberately quote-mining them and misrepresenting their ideas. In one episode, Mathew Wedel was describing the long-debunked "second brain theory" that claimed that certain dinosaurs had another brain located in their hip. He originally claimed that this is an outdated idea and scientists are still unsure about the functions of the so-called "second brain" (actually a widened area on the spinal cord, which is common in many animals, even humans). In the final cut, the editors removed his explanation and made it seem like he had been supporting the idea. This sparked major controversy in the paleontology community and fellow dinosaur expert David Hone called it the worst example of a TV show deliberately misrepresenting their own scientists. Due to viewer outcry, the Discovery Channel, who aired the show but did not directly produce it, later went back to revise the segment for the DVD release.
Although the depiction of the animals is questionable at times, this is one of the few documentaries to correctly show raptor dinosaurs covered in feathers.
