One time movie

It's a low budget movie, with limited funding. It could have been great, the story is interesting and a great idea for a descent movie. But the music, wanted me to turn the off button, several times. Not that bad acting, from unknown actors. I have seen it once and that's enough. I wanted the story to go deeper into the "vampire", so many things were left out. The social worker what was her story, why did she do, the things that she did. Some more wardrobe would have been nice, since he got blood over the clothes and magically have clean Grey clothes again. It's so many things left out, I know it's fiction, but anyway.

Interesting idea, bad implementation

The movie is not about vampires, really, but about how society is confining us in boxes from which we are not allowed to get out. The main character is a social worker, gently and then forcefully pushed to go to counselling because a child in her care committed suicide, while the system did absolutely nothing to help him or help her help him. Everybody around is telling her how she should behave, what she should do, how her own cases are to be solved because "obvious" and so on. There is a scene where she visits a vampire house, one of those weird Goth kids playing fantasy roles and dressing up and she gets a "reality it's all in the mind" to which she replies "not to me, it's not".

That being said, the acting is bad or in the best case wooden, the budget is minimal to non existent and the plot drags on. I liked the idea underneath the bad production, though. It's just that it's only an idea and it never gets anywhere from there. I prefer a bad film with a good idea to a good film with no purpose, though.

How?

I'm not one to bash, but this was utter trash.

Bad acting, bad script, bad framing, bad casting, bad set dressing, you think of it - bad everything. The bar is very low if this writer/director won an award for this. I have a feeling the 7* review was left by the man himself. Only awarded the film one star as I couldn't give zero.

There's a scene with a woman with a pushchair and the baby is actually a doll, my son who was watching commented 'that's the best this budget could stretch to' and he's 10!

Not even sure how or why I came across this film, or how I managed to sit through it all without turning it off.

Classic storytelling within a micro-budget

Warning: Spoilers
Saw this at Frightfest '21. Boy #5 does an incredible job of knitting a classic and well-trodden mythology with a modern setting and a socially relevant theme. Despite the title, the central character is the human social worker who succumbs to her fatal flaw of getting too emotionally involved in her cases, in this case, the titular character (a young vampire). This classic approach to storytelling delivers a satisfying emotional arc and structure for the film as a whole, with the central relationship of social worker/boy providing a strong spine to the film with some lovely, natural acting.

Some of the scenes are a little too slow and some are stilted. I saw an interview with the director who said he doesn't like rehearsing. Sometimes over-rehearsing can be bad for sure, but sometimes under-rehearsing can also be negative. If I were him, I would revisit that stance.

But overall, the director with his team does an incredible job, especially on limited resources, and especially in the hastily improvised (from a filmmaking point of view) vampire club scene. It's a wonderful achievement and a huge inspiration to grassroots filmmakers out there.
