The Lost Tree stars Thomas Ian Nicholas (pictured below) as Noah, “a grief-stricken man who has suffered a major tragedy and blames himself for it,” writer/director Brian A. Metcalf tells Fango. “He moves out to a secluded cabin to get away from his former life, and starts exploring the place and its surroundings. He soon discovers that it holds dark secrets, and the story becomes a personal fight between Noah and the cabin. Michael Madsen plays Noah’s father; Lacey Chabert plays Noah’s co-worker, who starts to question the place where he’s residing; Scott Grimes plays Alan, the real estate agent who leased Noah the place and has his own secretive agenda; and Clare Kramer plays Noah’s wife.”
Metcalf is a visual FX artist whose first feature-filmmaking venture was 2011’s Fading Of The Cries, which he recalls as “a troubled production in a variety of ways.

Director/writer: Brian A. Metcalf. Cast: Brad Dourif, Mackenzie Rosman and Elaine Hendrix. The Fading of the Cries is primarily a fantasy film with a few horror-styled monster trappings. The walking dead and unassuming vampires are used in a tale about a young lad, Jacob (Jordan Matthews), who rescues an equally aged, Sarah (Hallee Hirsh), from certain death. All they mostly do is run around town in a vain attempt to find a safe haven. A tiny bit of interest with Jacob and Sarah is developed. But what happens is hardly Twilight. The interest is there, but they do not go the extra mile. The chemistry developed has the feel of Matthews giving a very early Keaanu Reeves-like performance and Hirsh with the presence of Sandra Bullock. She’s clearly in charge, but not by much. When the little township she lives in suddenly becomes zombie central, nobody is interested in learning why.

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.
Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree,...

Fading of the Cries is a muddled mix of genres and intentions, a low-budget vanity shoot of special effects more appropriate for YouTube than a feature film, held together by the wonderful Brad Dourif, who, I swear, doesn't even read scripts anymore. So long as he gets to glower and wear a black cape he's fine.
But at least it's not boring. Two storylines are going on here. First is that of a writer (Thomas Ian Nicholas) who moves into the baffling Victorian house in the middle of a suburban neighborhood, a house where an evil necromancer, I mean necromincer, I mean necromizer, once lived. He uncovers a book from under the floorboards, a Necronomicon. I mean, Necromizercon. The writer of course starts toying with powers that he shouldn't be toying with, and resurrects the necromancer, I mean necromizer, I mean Brad Dourif.

Marketed by Sierra Affinity, Catch .44 is the last action thriller for actor Bruce Willis and a slew of cohorts. Also starring are Forest Whitaker, Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") and Brad Dourif (Fading of the Cries). The first film poster is available for Catch .44 and in the graphic there is a message: "if you are going down, take them with you." The graphic is comic book styled and the synopsis is larger than life, as el jefe (the boss) lures three "female assassins" in for one last mission. Charlie's Angels anyone? A specific release date has not been announced, but expect Catch .44 in theatres in 2011.
A look at Willis' career over the last five years and into future roles shows that this silent but charismatic actor might be in danger of being type cast as an action star. Willis has several action films coming...

Writer-director Brian Metcalf utilizes special effects as a sort of tech-age concealer, to try to spackle over various production cracks and shore up narrative deficiencies, but the result is a risible hodge-podge...

Fading Of The Cries
Stars: Brad Dourif, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Elaine Hendrix, Mackenzie Rosman | Written and Directed by Brian A. Metcalf
When watching Fading of the Cries it seems to be to be one movie that really made me think the use of CGI had gone too far. Yes it’s fair that CGI can help create worlds which would be way too expensive to do practically, and CGI can allow the fantastical to be created on screen, it can be used to do amazing things. It can also though damage the experience for the watcher as it can encroach on their experience. Movies have to create a form of reality that is believable to the watcher, not make them sit there considering how cheap that part of the movie looked.
The story in itself is quite ambitious. Sarah a teenage girl is left a necklace by her dead uncle.

Love 'em or hate 'em, every film that wants to get wide distribution these days has to pass through the MPAA at some point or another. Adam Green cried foul after the MPAA gave Hatchet II an Nc-17 rating saying it was impossible to reason with them to achieve an R rating for his film. Well, eventually Hatchet II did pass through with an R rating! Two films that seem poised for theatrical release this year have just passed through the MPAA recently. First up was Fading of the Cries which is due out in late May / early June and the other is World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries which comes out this Halloween and seems to be something in the Resident Evil style of films. Here's what the MPAA had to say about these films.

Back in August of 2009 we weren't kidding when we said this one was deep in post-production, with release far off. However, almost two years later, the good folks behind Fading of the Cries have finally has announced a release for sometime in late May or early June. This is no direct-to-video release though, Eammon Films is planning on sending this one to theatres.
No details yet on how wide this will release, or the after-market plans. However, with a film of this scope, it's only fitting that it get some kind of theatrical release. Check out the trailer ... g'head we'll wait.
This looks like something far removed from the average indie film; boasting over 1,100 effects shots and genre mainstay Brad Douriff. Quite frankly, I'm also kind of a fan of Thomas Ian Nicholas. No I'm not kidding, he entertains me.

Written, directed and produced by Brian Metcalf, Fading Of The Cries is an indie horror film slated for release in 2011. The film features Oscar-nominated veteran genre actor Brad Dourif and stars Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie TV series) and Mackenzie Rossman (7th Heaven TV series).
Brad Dourif is always a reason to check out a new horror film, but this trailer has some wicked killer special effects, action horror sequences and some promise to be a hit within the genre. It’s different, displaying a unique style and vision. Brian Metcalf may just have one of 2011′s most enjoyable indie horror flicks on his hands.
