Who killed the man in the hidden room?
Tweekums26 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
When a wealthy man is reported missing Jane quickly claims that the man never left his house; the local police claim that is impossible but Jane soon finds the man's body in a well-hidden 'safe room'. It looks as though the man was tortured by unknown assailants then managed to get to the room before dying. At the dead man's funeral Jane manages to offend his widow and the family lawyer but later, when he is sent to apologise he befriends her. Here he learns that far from being wealthy the man had recently gone bankrupt and she faces losing everything. As the investigation continues it emerges that he had a younger girlfriend who claims that he was about to leave his wife for her… along with his daughter and ten million dollars' worth of diamonds. The problem is nobody knows where he hid the diamonds and both women point the finger of blame at the other.

This was another entertaining episode; the intrigue starts almost immediately as Jane claims the man is in a house that has been thoroughly searched by the police. After that further questions are raised at regular intervals and the tension is increased when we learn about the diamonds ten again when the victim's daughter is kidnapped. As one would expect Jane provides plenty of laughs; the funniest when he accepts a bet to try to seduce the widow at her husband's funeral! Simon Baker is on great form here. The rest of the cast are solid too; as well as the regulars, Lisa Brenner and Angela Sarafyan stand out as the widow and girlfriend. The final resolution to the story is solid if not a great surprise… there weren't too many likely suspects to begin with. Overall this was another really enjoyably episode.

The Widow and the Diamonds
claudio_carvalho18 November 2021
When the investment banker Jason Sands is found tortured and dead inside a secret room, the CBI team investigates the case. Patrick Jane meets the widow Jennifer Sands at the funeral and feels a kind of connection with her. Further, he feels that she seems to be afraid of the family lawyer Michael Bonnet. They have a new meeting and Jennifer discloses that her husband was bankrupted and had sold all their assets, and she had just been informed by Bonnet at the funeral. The CBI continues the investigation and Jane and Lisbon meet Jason's mistress Adrianna Jonovic in his yacht. She gives some leads to the CBI but out of the blue Jennifer's daughter Julie is abducted and the kidnappers demand a 10-million-dollar ransom in diamonds. Who may be Jason's killer?

"Ladies in Red" is a great episode of "the Mentalist". The plot has many false leads and twists, but as usual Jane uses his power of observation to resolve the murder case and find the diamonds. My vote is eight.

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** Starts right out as an interesting puzzle with a locked "safe room". Very good dialogue, with a sexy widow, and a lot of missing money. Most interesting character for me was Adrianna Jonovic (Angela Sarafyan); she was just incredibly hot. I loved the way she referred to the two cute dirtbags as "scum pigs", and the way she was not at all impressed, or intimidated by Grace's threats "from you, I buy Girl Scout cookies"; beautiful retort. The little girl was charming, and necessary to finding the loot. Ending was good as far as true love and friendship can take an episode, but what could happen to the daughter, really? Well, Patrick has a way of interfering in things to the point of good outcomes. we must assume he does so, here, as well.

A good, memorable episode
yavermbizi10 October 2021
My overall rating of "The mentalist"'s Season 1: 4/10.

In my first watchthrough of "The mentalist" I had quickly lost track of the episodes' names; of which were good and which were bad. I'd only remembered a few: "Red Tide" and "Ladies in Red" I had remembered as good; "Redwood" as incredibly boring... This time, I was less than impressed with "Red Tide" to say the least, and braced for "Ladies in Red" being as bad - however, the chemistry between Jane and the widow, and the incredibly powerful culmination dialogue shone through, the same as they did the last time. Brilliant acting there by the participants, very heartfelt. This episode had some really cool dialogues in general.

There were some scenes that I felt were somewhat badly done: Jane's trick scene in the car is horribly filmed (just look at where Jane's interlocutor is aiming!) and edited in a pointlessly cheating way, disallowing you to follow the trickster's hands, arguably the most interesting part of a trick. They could've done it in one take, and properly. Additionally there were the usual inconsistent and unnecessary placename subtitles, contrivances, some "humour" fell a bit flat (although certainly not all) and the shooting scene was quite strange.
