Unique and refreshing drama
nofitatjam14 July 2020
I had high expectation when they announced this drama. From the director, writer and actors. When i first watched it, i need a lot of adjustment because it is so so different from any other drama i used to watch. But may be that is why it is so refreshing. Took me a while but the story is getting interesting and i can't wait for new episodes each weeks. The story flows nicely. The actings and chemistries are all good.

Great actors, bad storyline
Bigmac12323 September 2021
I love JCW which is why I completed the show. I liked the female lead too and the chemistry wasn't bad either. However, I was constantly frustrated by the storyline. They were trying to go for a nice guy character for JCW and instead turned him totally pathetic. So much potential wasted tbh. It takes ten episodes for them to set the story straight. Ten episodes of the main character trying to make it work with his girlfriend ( who isn't even the lead), constantly being mistreated while the female lead pines for him. Could have easily been a ten with that cast if they had speeded up romance a bit and made the male lead a bit assertive.

Must watch: A stress reliever!!!
kgolmei30 June 2020
Even though it's a romcom, there are various emotions and topics that are being touched upon-relationships, friendship, sisterhood, family, struggles to survive. Every episode is a surprise and the parodys are a bonus point! The special effects added has a great timing and reminds us of the webtoon adaptation. Also, when 2 great actors come together they are bound to spark on the screen, Ji Chang Wook & Kim Yoo Jung make a great pair and their chemistry has hit of really well. Not to forget the supporting cast, they are really good too and they complement the main cast so well. I personally loved it, can't wait to see how the rest of episodes will unfold. It will make you laugh so hard, by the end of the episode you would be recharged, wanting more of the laughing dose!!! Note: with all the negativity going around, I personally did not find it offensive at all. This is a drama, and it is meant to be fictional, just enjoy and have fun along!

Cowardly and Weak Characters and Writing Nearly Torpedo This Series!
spasek13 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This series was fairly strong through the first 12 episodes. It should have ended there, rather than filling the last four episodes with needless drama and uninteresting stories.

"Our Beloved Summer" is easily the best K-drama about young love that I've yet seen. It had intelligent, likable characters with a nice, smooth, and non-cliched story. This series falls well short of that one. The only thing that saves this series from the depths of despair is that it has strong performances by most of the cast.

Unfortunately, we have a menagerie of weak, cowardly characters, that for a while, are at least likable. That is, until they continue to demonstrate cowardice and weakness until the end.

Choi Dae Hyun is an honest and good-hearted young man nearing 30 who owns a convenience store. He treats his customers with respect and kindness. However, when it comes to his love life, Dae Hyun is about as dense as they come. In our culture, he's what we call a "whipped" man. Someone who has no say or power with his girlfriend. She calls the shots. She abuses him to no end. She toys with him like a puppy, and yet, he hasn't the brains or the guts to do anything about it. It's hard to feel sorry for people like this because they are part of the problem. The abused is just as much responsible as the person doing it. The irony is that his mother is almost as bad, which might explain his weakness.

We also have Saet Byul, a master of martial arts, and a young woman who falls hopelessly in love with Dae Hyun. She also has the task of raising her little brat of a sister. However, Saet Byul isn't very responsible. She provides underaged high school kids--including her sister--hard liquor to drink. She also never has the guts to seize opportunities when they present themselves. She also commits the most brazen act of cowardice by running away when she deems herself unworthy of Dae Hyun. Frankly, I never would have wanted her to come back. The writers proved how inept they were with the characters by creating plot points that go against the characters they created. There is no way Saet Byul would turn down Dae Hyun's initial offer of love. The writers simply felt the need to fill another few episodes with pointless drama. Yet another reason why the show backfires.

We also have two typical Korean mothers who dominate, interfere, and meddle in their children's lives. Of course, the key reason has nothing to do with love at all, but about money. It's sad how many people in this world equate success with money. Such parents have no business being parents. They claim to "know better" when they clearly do not. And meddlers may claim that they are doing it for someone else, but that is a lie. They are only doing it for themselves. And, even though I understand that this is an Asian culture, it's truly sad when a 30-year-old man can't stand up to his mother and simply tell her the truth.

We also have several uninteresting characters in Dal-Shik--who is funny in some respects--and Eun Byul, Saet Byul's bratty sister. This actress was the only one whose performance was cringe-worthy. Always uttering her lines in that whiny tone. And her story was left open-ended, as was Dae Hyun's sister.

By the 13th episode, I found myself no longer invested or caring about what happened between Saet Byul and Dae Hyun. Both pretended to be honorable, but they were cowards instead. I even fast-forwarded through most of the final episode because it was that bad. Oh, and you had one of the worst cop-out kissing scenes I've ever seen in the last episode.

However, as I said before, the performances were mostly very good. Ji Chang Wook has a real gift for comedy and the delivery of his lines. I thought that he was simply outstanding. It's just too bad he wasn't given a better script to work with.

Kim Yoo Jung was also very good as Saet-Byul. She has a dazzling smile that reminds me a lot of Lynda Carter from the 1970s. Both have unparalleled smiles. Only Mina Shin can equal her, except that Mina Shin has done a far superior job in picking good roles. Shin is still easily the much better actress.

I've always loved Kim Sun Young. I've already seen her in a few roles, including "Crash Landing On You" and she's just a brilliant character actress. It's too bad that her role was very much wasted here as a woman who is clearly ashamed of her husband and family. It's always sad to see a parent have shame for those closest to them. It simply speaks to their own problems and issues.

I really wanted to like this series, and as I said, I did for a while until it was bogged down in useless, petty melodrama and cliched plot lines that no longer fit the characters. This series is definitely a "must miss" in my book. I want characters that end up with redeemable traits as well as being likable, even if they don't necessarily start out that way. This show gives us characters that I'd never care to get to know or cheer for. And that is what is truly sad.

Now I need to quickly go and find a quality K-Drama to wash the bad taste of this one out of my mouth.

Cute, fresh and worth a watch!
crownpln9 August 2020
Despite the ridiculous controversy and the obvious age gap between the leads...their chemistry was undeniable. It was a cute, romantic and funny drama in a new setting thats worth a watch. By the end, I wished for more & I felt it had been rushed and something missing, but the after- credits did it justice. Made covid19 binge watching a bit more bearable !

🥀Expires Before Episode 10 °6.4° °somewhat good° 💯%🔍
50fiftillidideeBrain31 August 2023
A brief encounter with Dae Hyun, our saintly male lead, prompts orphan, Jung Saet Byul (who is currently raising her younger sister) to fall in love. He goes on with his day, but she is smitten for life. Fast forward 3 years and she goes to work for him at his convenience store. While people of her status are overlooked by the world, she manages to distinguish herself with her hard work and intelligence. She, °inconveniently, puts the hook-kick to his love life, however, through a series of misunderstandings and other blocks. There is no mistaken understanding when it comes to her, though: She's marked him for clearance; °her clearance to purchase him°, that is.

Rated 7.6 on MDL, BSR is much like unexpired convenience store fare - edible, somewhat good, but not very good. It degrades from being pleasant to being a bit of a chore in the last third. Knowing what I now know, would I go back and watch it again for the first time? That's almost a coin flipper. My answer is "no", but many people will enjoy watching this show - for good reason. Everyone is entitled to their form of wind-down entertainment, and BSR has obviously done the job for many viewers who have received it well. There are gems tucked away like Korean beef and fresh green onion in the 🍲. They have plenty of good ingredients, but they didn't incorporate them well. Just go into it with your eyes open(ha!). If your enjoyment level starts declining, know that it doesn't get better later. It fizzles and flattens.

Let's talk about the fizzle first. They have fun with the girl fights. There's Flying Kicks and flying bodies all over the place. They even do the Matrix Reloaded burst-out-of-the-pile-up. They have animation overlay to show eyes with hearts or to bleep out some language. All of it's cute and fun. I was thrilled with the first couple episodes.

They lay out clear character contrast in the opening shots of ep1. She's leading a gang brawl. He's saving a 🐈. (Gimme the perfect combo, indeed!) Sadly, he doesn't notice her for 2/3 of the show. Forget her, °I was frustrated! Most viewers want to see him take notice in little ways early on - let's get those 🌭 on the warming rollers! It takes a while for them to get toasty, right? It's a pity that all we see is his pity, or his overlooking her. Very gradually, they bond - soon the two communicate naturally by intricate hand ✌🏽👐🏼 signals. Nobody else can understand, but they somehow do. It's one of the cutest things about the show.

There's a handful of excellent scenes... brilliant really. "Let me go through the expired goods," she says, when the girlfriend walks in the store. He goes to a college reunion and everyone is practically dressed in monotone. They look a boring bunch. He has the most color in a pale green sweater, which could signify that he's still green. He's still a bit naive. She doesn't have a HS diploma, but she is not green. She loves green things and 💐, though. Our FL knows the meaning of every flower. I loved it and it makes me want to learn more of them. We will see each female lead have a talk with the other that leads to a situational change. It's skillful mirroring. Kdrams love the 💘 🔺. (It's not a love triangle if a third party is interested in one of them, but they only have eyes for eachother, is it?) There's some truly funny moments that are muted, slightly, by other clumsy humor attempts that fail. The closing of episode 12 is fresh - stunning, even.

The best thing about BSR is Kim Yoo Jung playing Jung Saet Byul. She's gorgeous. Her smile is brighter than 🌞. If she went past the freezers she could "melt all that stuff". Also, she can wear tan or white and look good, which shouldn't be allowed - I hate her, lol. Her friends are likable, as is the ML's BFF. The secondary romance is painfully goofy at times, but overall I enjoyed that couple more. Kim Sun Young as Kong Boon Hee, Dae Hyun's mother, is a blast. She commands the screen. Watching her makes me happy. I suppose I'm a true fan.

As for every other character... yuck. His father is contemptible. I want to strangle him every time he's on screen. It's not okay to be that lazy and irresponsible. They get offended when somebody hurts dad's pride. He deserves so much more than hurt feelings! What °pride? ...Pride in what? Breathing? Dae Hyun. He's the ultimate good guy, but they fail to sell "everybody's doormat " as a romantic lead. He is in a current day relationship with a woman when the show begins, and it's a mostly positive relationship; his GF is not the cartoonish villain that they'll often show in romcoms, which is appreciated. He's a wonderful human being, but he's missing sex appeal. He's too wimpy! Ji Chang Wook plays Choi Dae Hyun. He plays a similarly nervous guy who is upended by a woman, in Lovestruck In The City, which is far better than BSR. He's great in K2. It's not the actor's fault, it's how they wrote and directed him.

Our leads' °besties° have instant 🎇. Their relationship is easily more fun than the primary romance. "If I had love in My heart, I'd want the expiration date to be ten thousand years away." "Just call me ten thousand years." Yep, that's how GMO the dialog can get in the show. To be fair, that's between a pair that is comic relief, and they say a lot of very silly things. It's almost slapstick, but hey, they're fun. The director tries to wedge in a little too much nonsense, so the eyes will roll at times.

BSR becomes a bit of a slog to stick with it as the episodes roll on. Despite many nice touches like animation overlay, snappy cutting, and pauses that enhance, they don't have enough content to fill more than 10eps competently. Most of the characters are not relatable enough to truly draw the viewer in, and many of the plot drivers and vignettes are boring. Unfortunately, after the initial taste sensation, the expiration date is met long before the episodes expire.

Age 13+ The show is tame.

No language cautions. They touch on eroticism via the friend's webtoon. Fighting.

Re-📺? Never

{BTW, our ML is BFF with a guy that actually has a tan! Eum Moon Suk plays Han Dal Shik (Dae Hyun's best friend). He looks so much like a friend of mine (who happens to be Hispanic) that I could only smile and smh every time he appeared on screen. I never plan to go down a 🐇 ⚫, but here we go: When you watch East Asian dramas you would think everybody there is paler than Tom Brady, which is tedious. East Asia's multi-millenia love of pale skin is connected to wealth & status. Field workers are tanned by the sun while the wealthy have a cave-dweller-like vitamin-D deficiency. We will hear Dae Hyun's family talk about their pride more than twice, and that is what it's all about. I am in love with 🌏Asian entertainment. I hesitate (or voice qualifiers) before recommending it to my African American friends and family, though, because it's as colorless as the show Friends. People insist on judging people based on things for which we have no control. Is anything more meaningless than a person's looks? Nobody has a choice of parentage or their skin color, so what is there to judge? Furthermore, much of history has been bleached. Early pictorials of Jesus showed a milk-chocolate skin tone until racism gripped the middle ages. Bible scholars will tell you that there aren't any white people in the Bible, except perhaps, some tangential bad actors. (In Poland they never adopted the Caucasian Jesus and kept the old paintings). The legend of the leprechaun was probably based on real-life Africans visiting Europe with gold. Africa was loaded with gold in ancient times, and there were Africans that navigated the world in canoes with gifts and exotic animals. They were masters at reading the sea currents, or the superhighways of the sea. The legend degraded over time to what we see now. That's two examples from a whole universe most people didn't know existed, Other than the good old vices of pride and prejudice, I cannot tell you why our 🌍 history has been color-lifted, but it is a fact. So, if we point at 🌏, three fingers are pointing back at 🌎. The result is that we remain divided. We should challenge them to diversify more, but also be patient with Asia. We all have deficiencies to work on. I am respectfully and patiently calling them out on this tired old mindset. Let's not start on the way they beat up on orphans...}

Could Have Been Better...
Chaokage8 June 2021
Let's start with the romance that never actually took part of this series at all. A romance genre with almost no romance. Even the relationship between Ji Chang-Wook and Sun Hwa-Han could barely even be called a romantic relationship. As you watch the series, you'll come to see they failed to deal with a certain crucial event relating to those two. There was even, for me, an unrealistic event happening during the last episode. The ending was a big no for me. I mean for real. How could they even think about ending the series that way especially after all the time we had to go through waiting for that moment. The only redeeming aspects of this series were the comedy and the fighting scenes. You'll get to see some of the funniest moments with some unexpected comedy. They did a very good job regarding those two but failed miserably when it came to romance.

disappointing ***spoilers***
lox_bagel24 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I came into this with high expectations, as I love and adore both lead actors. I thought no matter the story, these two can make anything work. Sadly, no. No actor in the world could have rescued this mess of sloppy, contrived, and inconsistent writing.

I have watched my fair share of K dramas, from the excellent to the mediocre but have never been more disappointed or angry than with this one.

Whatever was deemed inappropriate content is nothing I would even raise an eyebrow over (the "kiss" in the pilot is chaste and without context, the protagonist's best friend draws an erotic webtoon for a living **yawn), however having a Korean character be borderline blackface and his portrayal as a "Rastafarian" be the butt of all jokes is cultural appropriation at best and racism at worst. How is this a "joke" in 2020? he could have been made a funny sidekick without all of that, he could have been the awkward virgin who longs for love but is getting paid to write erotica and make that hilarious. Ugh so disappointing.

Aside from that, the plot is a mess. Instead of having a meaningful past connection between the main couple established, we are thrown one scene of background, remembered by the female protagonist who has been stalking the male protagonist for a decade (oh yes, how romantic *sarcasm). When the male protagonist finally remembers it at the very end, we are not given any insight of how he came to this revelation or why it would matter (no soulmate vibe here, peeps). We have to watch him suffer in an annoying relationship with someone who doesn't value him for 10 out of the 16 episodes (I kid you not and no, this is not the female protagonist but a side character). We aren't given any meaningful development of his feelings for the female protagonist, no believable switch from his brotherly/ supportive boss attitude to actually having romantic feelings at all.

And to add insult to injury, we are not even given a romantic kiss between the leads at the very very end?

What was the point of the martial arts plot? To teach us that violence is NOT the way to solve conflicts? Except it turns out, in this show it absolutely is shown to be the solution every single time? If the martial arts school her dad ran was supposed to be the red line that threads all the main characters together, it miserable failed at that, too.

And I know music isn't THAT important but if I hear "crazy, crazy" one more time, I'll scream.

Don't get me wrong, there are a handful of emotional and well acted and executed scenes in this drama, mostly centered around family and feelings of belonging but they are few and far between.

What an underwhelming, uninspired waste of two amazingly talented and beautiful actors.

Such a wonderful potential drama with great casts.. runied by non judgements of ppl and piled down by cases
Giselle171022 November 2020
The first 4 5 episodes were good. But ever since a case was filed against the drama for some literally ridiculous reason.. They just changed the drama line.. The romance and love between them wasn't heartwarming. Rather there was repeating same old tacky insecure gf and annoying second leads fighting over cartoons. For this stupid case this wonderful drama with such a good cast went in vain. They didn't even have a proper kiss in the entire series! So much for a rom com yeah?

ONE OF THE BEST DRAMA EVER
desannd2 July 2020
I have laughed so hard and so much while watching this drama that I am sure that my neighbours thought about calling the cops...the drama is that good! I am not surprised though because the two main leads are excellent actors especially ji chang wook. I have looked at all his dramas and he is indeed the best actor worldwide!!! I am so excited to see the other episodes and I know they would be just as great if not better than what I have seen so far.

Not bad
joseee1239 September 2020
If you love Ji Chang Wook after his acting in Healer or K2, AND if you don't like the flying/jumping-silly-with cartoonish overlays- type of rom-coms, i DON'T advice you to watch this one. If you don't already know JCW and like rom-coms, give it a try. However, if you can get past the first three episodes, the rest is quite fun and enjoyable!

So much potential wasted...
ece-timucin24 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It is a very entertaining show and I like to watch this kind of light shows. It is a stress reliever indeed. However the storyline is so weird, I feel like the writers was expecting a season 2 therefore they wanted to keep us waiting until the unite two main characters. At some point I guess they learned that there will not be a season 2 and tried to get together all the mess they have spread around. But it really was one of the most disappointing endings. I was so frustrated that we did not even see a kiss.. :(

A REALLY MUST WATCH ROMANTIC COMEDY K-DRAMA
maryamsubaih30 June 2020
It's simply hilarious, sweet and so touching, the actors bring out the characters to life.

Ji Chang Wook has excelled in this drama as he fully delved into the comedy part of it being handsome, sweet, and clumsy at the same time, as a romantic he already mastered that art.

as for Kim Yoo Jung, fits the role easily, young, vibrant and fiery, has a lot of chemistry with Ji Chang Wook, and both are great on screen together being their first time to act in a romcom drama together.

the drama is great, watch worthy, for the lead actors, the director and the story.

Liife in abstract
debbiecheryllayne14 November 2022
As comedy, there are many hilarious moments. But the male lead lives life in the abstract, he speaks about himself in a manner that contradictshis actions too often. Female lead is his wake-up call. This is seemingly a tale that reinforces the idea that relationships between people of different classes are doomed to fail. But in reality, it is about an initial relationship where only one person is putting in effort to no avail and the viability of the relationship is only real in the characters ' imagination. One person with rules but no effort, and one with all effort but no sight (whether insight, vision, critical thinking) = good grounds for abuse or divorce. All head without brain is a trait of the experts who govern today's world and too many university or college graduates.

Inasmuch as this is a carbon copy when it comes to plot development in many k-dramas, it is developed directorially and edited in a manner where the lack of a kiss is not a deficiency. Reggae boy and Frizzle Head were masterful in their roles. (When someone in Barbados tells you that your head look like a frizzle fowl, it means it is unkempt and needs at least a good combing\brushing and styling.)

The dreams or imaginative detours were full of hilarity and the one in the last fight scene was epic. Absolutely hilarious. Moreover, the first and last episodes were not boring or stupid or filled with flashbacks because artistic creators lost their way and gave up.

The male lead begins with living life in the abstract: where one is seemingly attached to many things but in reality, so detached that one questions the value of formal education. One of the themes is love between classes. That is how it is framed. However, when one examines the art within the frame one sees the real truth. One partner holds all of the power, makes the rules and is the epicenter of the other's universe. The other, in its orbit around its sun lives in an imaginary realm of intimacy and value. Both see the relationship as viable, but imaginary viability is of no value and leads to abuse and divorce. This is just the tip of the iceberg of the delusions abundant in our modern world, where education, liberation and secularism mask the puzzles of humanity: how do you identify, and separate affection created and fueled by the imagination from that which is genuine and experienced by two people. A solitary framing of any relationship will hurt the one who imagines best and invests the most.

A lot of confusion surrounding the experience of love lies in an unidentifiable plane where things created by emotion, chemical reaction and deep longing generate an individual experience often so intense and enduring that the one will never deny its 'reality'. One of the most amazing conundrums of human life is the fact that education highlights logic as superior but the imagination is the bigger bread winner and the place where isms, schisms and fallacy (lies) engineer categories and distinctions.

Two of the greatest such fallacies are racism and survival of the fittest. Racism is rooted in the idea that difference means superior or inferior. Science, religion and political action in the minds of the creator created a monster that education or science today can only chip away at but is powerless to destroy. Survival of the fittest is based on the idea that that which exists in the animal kingdom automatically applies to mankind. Mirroring. While proven among animals, and related mainly to reproduction, it is an assumption upon which a whole lot of human social ideology is rooted in. Inequalities, both real and manufactured, are the scaffolding, whereas the presumption of the infallible teacher, -instructor, mother, religious leader- reinforces ignorance as fact.

So we are faced with the dilemma where our smart technology is not foolproof because our prejudices, blind spots, imperfect knowledge is built into it but called smart. So, we see assumption framing fact. Modern science. Covid response and conspiracy are the first unfunded but international laboratory trial of how smart we are even with our gadgets. It is both horrifying and hilarious to listen to modern conversations where strength of conviction has replaced proof or evidence.

I would rather watch a grade B drama, fiction easily recognized, than listen to folly masquerading as brilliance and insight (a fiction declaring itself to be the highest truth or profound reality). In so doing, I avoid the malady of indifference, overstep the despair of fear and am able to reenergize for the battle for young minds. Laughter is the most fundamental ammo. I enjoyed the action and comedy in this drama. Appreciated the ending even more. Thank you from a gal in Barbados.

A drama not to be missed!
moomoomamauk30 June 2020
A heart warming, hilariously funny, comic like drama not to be missed! Kim Yoo Jung took the character Jung Saet Byul to another level, displaying action scenes with ease and power. With Ji Chang Wook portraying a humble, kind hearted, highly moral Choi Dae Hyun, this drama is exploded with great chemistry between two leading characters. They tell the stories of love, despair and trust. Have fun watching!!

Never get bored to watch any of his K-Dramas/Movies. Ji Chang Wook has superb natural and talented acting skills. He has a total package and can play in different types of K-Damas/Movies. His K-Dramas are always stunning, outstanding, and enjoyable to watch. With the MOST gorgeous, beautiful superstar female lead, they will make this romantic comedy K-Dramas definitely the most enjoyable to watch. They are the MOST Attractive with Bright Smiles, and Splendid Superstars. I really enjoy watching
