LevelK continues to terrify international distributors with Finnish horror “The Knocking,” directed by Max Seeck and Joonas Pajunen.
The film has now been sold to over 70 countries, Variety has learned, with the company sealing further deals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Alamode Film), Latin America (Gussi), Cis (Capella Film), France (Kmbo), Indonesia (Pt. Falcon) and Taiwan (Av-Jet International Media).
“We have been looking at many Nordic projects, especially the Finnish ones. We definitely see a shift in not just more genre projects emerging, but also in the subjects and the creativity,” says CEO Tine Klint.
“‘The Knocking’ ticks those boxes in providing a Nordic horror with an original story, told through classic genre tropes, which is exactly what the buyers are looking for at the moment.”

Bloody Disgusting’s The Twin review is spoiler-free. Gaslighting and paranoid isolation frequently come into play in horror movies centered around motherhood. Everything about The Twin‘s premise teases more of the same. Director and co-writer Taneli Mustonen (Lake Bodom) aims to subvert that formula by infusing it with folk horror and a few narrative sharp turns. But it’s so fixated on […]

Especially when it comes to the complexities of motherhood, it’s a mother’s job to protect and nurture her child; but what if the child is the threat? In recent years, Americans haven’t been having much luck when visiting Northern Europe. This time it’s Finland where our expat heroes find themselves, though to be fair, one of them does have a connection there, having inherited a large house in a remote village where the locals seems to have nothing better to do than stand around and stare suspiciously. What’s more, they have reason to get away from their old lives, having gone through the trauma of losing a child. Anthony (Steven Cree) hopes that the move will allow them to start rebuilding and get back to the way they used to be. Rachel (Teresa Palmer) has been hesitant about it, but she’ll be happy as long as it works out for little Elliot (Tristan Ruggeri).

Finland has responded to a spike in demand for its content with a slew of new series. As revealed by Laura Kuulasmaa, executive director at Audiovisual Producers Finland (Apfi), over 30 will be released this year alone, a 20% uptick on 2018.
“Compared to eight, ten years ago, when there were maybe only five scripted series per year, the increase has been huge,” she tells Variety ahead of French TV festival Series Mania’s “Focus on Finland” showcase.
The Film in Finland cash rebate has facilitated international investments and growth of the budgets, she notes.
Matti Paunio, head of production at the Finnish Film Foundation, adds:
“I think the biggest trend overall is the diversification of subjects and points of view. Scripts and series are more courageous, they take on different genres more often than ever. Production is booming, but apart from the quantity, we are also providing quality.”

"We didn't leave him... He is always with us." Rlje Films has revealed an official trailer for a horror film titled The Twin, which takes place in Finland following an American family that moves there after losing one of their children. The film is opening in Finland first in April, then in the US this May. The film is about a mother who needs to confront the unbearable truth about her surviving twin son. She must "unravel the torturous truth about her son and confronts the malicious forces attempting to take a hold of him." Teresa Palmer stars, along with Steven Cree, Barbara Marten, and Tristan Ruggeri playing both of the twin boys. Another epic horror thriller from Finland! Wow - this has some incredible shots in it. Definitely not a low key indie - this seems to have some big thrills and intense twists in the story. The trailer is worth a look.

As the end of the first decade of the Finnish Film Affair nears, the industry event’s director, Maria Pirkkalainen, who also heads Nordic Flair, notes its phenomenal growth, with more than 200 Finnish film projects showcased, more than 500 international guests brought to Helsinki, and the establishment of a major platform and networking forum for locals.
