We’re betting you already know, but for those who don’t, the Pacific Northwest is currently being pummeled by a historically terrible heatwave that is a direct result of climate change. Things are particularly grim in Seattle, Wash., which saw its hottest recorded temperatures ever on Sunday.
It’s a terrifying taste of things to come, but it was also the source of an amusing cold open joke on Monday’s episode of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” The gag imagines what the upcoming revival of “Frasier,” which took place in Seattle, might look like if it took these climactic disasters into account. The result is that Dr. Frasier Crane is too zonked out by the heat to offer advice — not that it matters, since the citizens of Seattle are all being burned alive in the heat.
The clip begins with a brief recap of the nightmarish things mentioned above,...

‘Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet,’ First New Off-Broadway Musical, Announces Premiere (Exclusive)
In another sign that New York’s cultural life is coming back after a long Covid-era hiatus, “A Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet” will premiere in September. The show will be the first new musical to debut Off-Broadway since the pandemic shutdown went into effect in March 2020.
The show is the brainchild of Alex Wyse, the creator and star of “Indoor Boys” and a cast-member of Deaf West’s recent “Spring Awakening” revival, and Ben Fankhauser, one of the actors in the cast of “Newsies” and “Beautiful.” The two wrote the book, music, and lyrics. It will be directed by Marshall Pailet (“Baghdaddy”) and choreography will be overseen by Stephanie Klemons, the associate choreographer of “Hamilton.” The musical begins previews on Friday, September 17th, at the DR2 Theatre, with an opening night set for Monday, September 27th. The limited engagement will run through Sunday, November 14th, 2021.

Since “In the Heights,” a lauded adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical, fell short of box office expectations, it would be easy to point to its hybrid debut on HBO Max as the culprit.
But streaming isn’t necessarily to blame for the movie’s lackluster $11.4 million four-day opening weekend.
Yes, it’s possible that some HBO Max subscribers opted to watch the movie at home rather than venturing out to theaters, depressing overall box office ticket sales. In reality, “In the Heights” was facing much larger obstacles than easy-to-reach TV remotes.
“It’s not really a box office vs. streaming problem,” says Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst at Box Office Pro. “‘In the Heights’ had a strong core fanbase, but it didn’t expand beyond that.”
Robbins noted that recent offerings from Warner Bros. — particularly “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Mortal Kombat” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It...

It’s a very In The Heights week for Deadline’s New Hollywood Podcast.
Earlier this week, we had star Anthony Ramos as a guest and, in a bonus episode, we welcome In The Heights director Jon M. Chu as well as the music man who created the original Tony-winning musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
In the Heights, which opens in theaters and on HBO Max today, will most definitely change the game when it comes to Latinx representation in film, a community that is wildly underrepresented in Hollywood. The movie musical is set in the titular Latinx community of New York City’s bustling Washington Heights. When the neighborhood’s charismatic local bodega owner, and the pic’s humble narrator, finally decides to fulfill his dream of going to the island his parents called home,...

Cruella was a vibrant, funny, and raucous ride which saw scrappy young seamstress and designer Estella go head to head with snooty fashion high priestess, and all round bad person, The Baroness in a funky, punky, spiky take on the protege outdoing the mentor trope. Emma Stone and Emma Thompson fizz and spark as the warring fashionistas, the outfits are fabulous, and the soundtrack is banging.
Oh yeah, and at some point in the future, the plucky, if slightly deranged, upstart you’ve been rooting for the whole time is going to become a puppy murderer. But shhhh, try not to think about that too much.
While Cruella was generally well received, there’s a definite disconnect between the Cruella de Vil we get at the end of the movie and the fur-crazed demon we meet in 101 Dalmatians, and now that news has arrived that Disney is already working...

No one is more excited for the return of Broadway than Lin-Manuel Miranda! On Tuesday night, the In the Heights creator appeared on The Tonight Show for a theatrical performance about the return of musicals in September. Miranda and Jimmy Fallon put their own fresh spin on "You'll Be Back" from Hamilton to welcome back all the Broadway shows they've missed over the last year. They re-create scenes from Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked, West Side Story, The Book of Mormon, and so many more in the delightful parody.
"Broadway, oh, Broadway, you're finally coming back," Miranda sings. "I miss drinking wine out of sippy cups and a $20 snack / A night at the theater, my favorite kind of date / I even miss the people who always show up late." The best part is when Broadway legends Olga Merediz, Phylicia Rashad, Kristin Chenoweth, Christopher Jackson, Laura Benanti, and Jimmy Smits join them on stage.

Broadway received the musical equivalent of an engraved invitation last night when Lin-Manuel Miranda joined Jimmy Fallon in a star-packed stage-themed production number on The Tonight Show, with the two, alongside Jimmy Smits, Olga Merediz, Laura Benanti, Kristin Chenoweth and Christopher Jackson, heralding the industry’s imminent return.
Sung to the jaunty tune of Hamilton’s “You’ll Be Back,” Miranda & Fallon & Friends performed the customized “Broadway’s Back!” with references to (and costumed dancers for) such shows as Six, Phantom of the Opera, Dear Evan Hansen, Chicago, West Side Story, Moulin Rouge, Aladdin, Wicked, Book of Mormon, Come From Away and, of course, Hamilton.
The ensemble even sang the praises of audience late-comers and expensive snacks. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

Few industries have been more fully shut down by the pandemic than the performing arts. Broadway has been dark for well over a year. But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and the Great White Way is preparing for its return in September. To build hype for Broadway’s resurrection, Jimmy Fallon teamed up with one of Broadway’s most prominent emissaries, “Hamilton” and “In the Heights” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, for a rousing musical number on Tuesday’s “Tonight Show.”
The bit started with an original song called “Broadway’s Back,” celebrating all the things they missed about Broadway, even “drinking wine out of a sippy cup” and paying $20 for a snack, and paying homage to some of Broadway’s biggest musicals, including “Chicago,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “West Side Story,” “The Lion King,” “Book Of Mormon,” “Wicked,” and of course “Hamilton,” among many more.
