Al Yankovic can be described in a lot of ways besides "Weird." Most people know that he's a chart-topping singer-songwriter, a director-producer, a top-notch parodist, an author and a die-hard polka enthusiast. Even those who have followed his career closely, however, may have forgotten he was, for a brief moment, the host of a short-lived children's television show.
The Weird Al Show debuted on CBS on September 13, 1997 as part of their Saturday morning lineup. Each episode began with the all important "today's lesson" before viewers were invited into Yankovic's underground...

‘Things Blowing Up Good’ has been surefire entertainment since the beginning of cinema, but this ill-fated Cinerama extravaganza about the biggest explosion in recorded human history limps along despite some pretty darned impressive volcanic effects. It’s quite an entertaining spectacle, with various good performers in three soap opera plots, either overacting or loitering about with nothing to do. And don’t forget the from-left-field musical striptease.

On September 6, 1968, Eric Clapton joined The Beatles for a day. It was for the recording of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” The George Harrison-penned song now famously features lead guitar by Clapton, though he wasn’t officially credited on The White Album where the song appeared. The Beatles had made a couple attempts to record “Guitar Gently Weeps” earlier that year, in July and also an electric version on September 5. None of those arrangements were quite coming together. “They weren’t taking it seriously,” Harrison later said of his bandmates. There was already a great deal of of conflict among the group by this point. The next day, Harrison was giving Clapton a ride from Surrey to London, and he asked Clapton to play on the track. Clapton at first balked at the idea, saying “Nobody [else] ever plays on the Beatles’ records.” But he eventually agreed to join the...

At least seven people are dead in a shooting in rural Piketon, Ohio, that took place at multiple scenes after 8 a.m. Friday morning, according to multiple reports. The late David Bowie brought something down to earth (literally, in one case) to his film acting roles. We look at his film acting roles.
Editor's note: we don't like to run material to generate clicks off the death of someone. We did, however, want to talk about the wonderful film and TV work that the late, great David Bowie has left behind. Hence, we've thus held this piece back to now. If it still feels too soon, then do give it a miss.
David Bowie's state of existence at the time of performing influenced his musical ‘personas’ enormously. One of the hardest bouts of growing pains experienced by adolescents is that rite of passage known as the high school experience. In high school one is subject to discovering their own sense of self-identity and purpose. In fact, sometimes the social factor is crucial because the cost of belonging in social-related circles is vital in a four-year commitment to belonging among your peers.
The tension is high to belong and get along as your search for excellence in good grades, social interaction and the overall learning experience is important. However, not every youngster can cope with what they are faced as the obstacles to excel are demanding in high school. Hence, the potential to become “an outsider” is inevitable and the unlikeliest label that no one can overcome no matter how much they try.
The movies have been instrumental in capturing such heavy-handed angst and frustration of the tortured...

Psych is a warm and engaging and frequently hilarious show, and having spoken to the cast and crew at Sdcc, I can attest that they are just as much of a blast to talk to as the show is to watch. I got to sit down with James Roday, Dulé Hill, Cary Elwes, Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, Corbin Bernsen, Steve Franks, Chris Henze, and Kelly Kulchak and dish about the show. Here’s what I learned.
The Psych cast sings around the set a lot, and loved doing Psych: The Musical (which will air in December), and actually singing for the cameras.
Kirsten Nelson: “It was exciting to do! It was a whole lot of fun to go into a recording studio to record the songs and play it back for the crew, who were excited to hear us sing. They hear us singing, goofing around all the time,...

The brilliant scientist Maya Hansen was first introduced in 2005, in the pages of Iron Man: Extremis by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov. In that landmark story, Hansen co-created the titular biotechnology that could change humanity forever, granting its users accelerated healing, enhanced speed and intelligence, and impossible strength. Hansen's ambitions track fairly closely with the plot of "Iron Man 3," which stars Rebecca Hall as the troubled scientist. We had a chance to speak with Hall about her character's motivations in the new Marvel Studios film, which the actress praises highly for its adult depiction of strong and smart women who're defined by their abilities rather than their romantic relationships with its male hero. Warning: Mild spoilers ahead Moviefone: A lot of "Iron Man 3" is taken from the "Extremis" story by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov. Did you read that or any other comics in preparation for the role of Maya Hanson?...

James Ellroy adaptations, for the most part (of what’s not a large pool), don’t exactly “work.” The big, big exception to this rule is Curtis Hanson‘s L.A. Confidential, a remarkable film of great craft and even larger entertainment value that, in its own existence, possibly set unfair expectations for later works. And the only other notable spin is Brian De Palma‘s The Black Dahlia, a film I happen to be one of the six fans of — if only because it takes a complex crime novel and turns it into an intentionally opaque two-hour feature. Above all else, though, it shows that his books are both too long and too specific in their writing to truly function as movies. (There is a 1987 James Woods vehicle, Cop, which I doubt anyone reading this has even seen. Nobody seems to like it, anyhow.)

"Safety Not Guaranteed" isn't your typical indie romance. For starters, it's about the possibility of time travel: The film is loosely based on a 2005 classified ad-turned-internet meme posted by a man (played by Mark Duplass) looking for a time travel companion.
"Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke," reads the ad. "You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before."
The plot isn't the only unusual thing about "Safety Not Guaranteed." The indie film's budget was small, but the score, which director Colin Trevorrow compares to one you might find in a blockbuster like "E.T." or "Superman," is full of big sound.
"There are some amazing indie scores, but usually the big themes go to movies that are budgeted at $100 million or more," Trevorrow told HuffPost Entertainment. "'Safety Not Guaranteed...

Here's the thing with Glee: First it takes you up, up, up, and then it drives you down, down, down. Like last night's first of two episodes, "Props," which has to be one of its best episodes ever – well-written, tightly plotted, interesting, moving, and featuring some amazing performances – that was followed by an episode so uninspired I wish I could just sum it up by saying, "And then they won Nationals."
But.

Sometimes it's tough to be a director when you have to handle a remake or prequel on a film, especially if it ended up developing a cult following. Fans will bash it the film to high heaven before they even take a glimpse at the final cut, and sometimes people just can't handle that. Then there are directors like Craig Brewer who take the negative energy and brushes it off his shoulder, which is pretty easy to do if some people can't remember who played the main character first. Still, it's difficult to remake a beloved film, but Brewer didn't shy away. Now we're taking a trip back into that small no-dancing town in Brewer's version of "Footloose." We follow Ren MacCormack, played by newcomer Kenny Wormald, who's an outcast in a new town. Despite the setbacks, that doesn't stop the young man from trying to have everyone dance around once again.

I thought I'd share this since we were just talking in that Taylor Lautner post -- I realize they're not exactly interchangeable ;) -- about the limited shelf life of young male actors who get hired for a lot of big roles and big projects before they've truly proven themselves. Isn't that essentially what happened to Hartnett?

On Saturday, with less than a day of preparation, Hanson somehow managed to pull off a 12-hour live-stream benefit for the earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts in Japan. They followed that up with an early (like, 12:20 a.m. early) morning performance on Sunday at South by Southwest. And on Monday, they finally took a minute to reflect on what turned out to be a very eventful weekend.
"The whole thing was a labor of love ... in the sense of nobody's really getting anything out of it, other than our desire to give and give of ourselves. I don't think I'll ever forget it," Zac Hanson told MTV News. "The people that put themselves out for this — and most of them will not really get the credit — the work...

After eliminating roughly half of the 327 contestants the first two days of Hollywood Week, "American Idol" is back with the dreaded Group Day, which is one of our favorite parts of the entire show. There are always so many tears and meltdowns, but there are also some amazing performances that come out of it -- remember Danny Gokey and Jamar Rogers group from two years ago? I still remember how good they were.
Also - I realize how stupid it is to make solo artists perform in groups, but I don't care. Group Day is awesome.
Since there were two days of first-round eliminations, a bunch of day one kids had already formed groups and were thinking they were ahead of the game. But then producer Ken Warwick drops the bomb that the groups have to include a mixture of both days' contestants, because that's only fair for the day two kids.

The Ifp's Independent Film Week (September 19-23rd) perfectly fits into the fall schedule of busy film activity sliding in after the Toronto Int. Film Festival and a focal point of the week is of course, the Project Forum. This year, Ifp has named a whopping 150 feature film and documentary film projects in all stages of development. I'd pay close attention to the crazy list below - I see a lot of future Sundancers and SXSWers. Here are a few that grabbed my attention: Among the feature scripts in development, we have Joan Stein's Beauty on the Vine - the project to be produced by Anne Chaisson has Olivia Wilde and David Straithairn attached. Lance Edmands' Bluebird and his producer Kyle Martin were both feature in our American New Wave 25 profiles - as is the case for Dash Shaw who is working on The Ruined Cast. Actor Ryan...

Youngest brother of Hanson, Zac Hanson, is about to become a dad for the second time. On Thursday, July 1, the 24-year-old rocker shared about the happy news on nationally-syndicated radio show Kidd Kraddick in the Morning.
"I have a new new baby. It's coming. Nobody even knows," Zac revealed. Zac has already had a son, John Ira Shepherd Hanson, with wife Kathryn "Kate" Tucker. When welcoming his first child in May 2008, he gushed, "There is not an audience or concert that could ever stand up to the feeling of meeting your baby for the first time."
Beside joining brother John Ira, Zac and Kate's new family addition will also accompany Taylor Hanson and wife Natalie Anne Bryant's kids, Jordan Ezra, Penelope Anne, River Samuel and Viggo Moriah as well as Clarke Everett and James Monroe, children of Zac's oldest brother Isaac Hanson.

Warning: Spoiler alert (although, after reading this, you may realize that this is impossible) These days, when people hear the term street art, they often picture Shepard Fairey's Obama Hope poster, yet it has a diverse history that includes everything from Keith Haring's brightly colored bodies to the cubism of the graffiti world--the three-dimensional lettering that old school New York City writer Tracy 168 dubbed Wildstyle. It encompasses artists from Michelangelo--who wrote his name in the remains of Domus Aurea so many centuries ago--to Neck Face, Ron English, Jef Aerosol,Tod Hanson, Swoon, Twist, and, of course, the Pied Piper of street hype and city storytelling, Banksy. Central to Banksy's allure is his anonymity. Nobody is sure who the artist behind these hit-and-run hybrids of the sociopolitical and the silly really is. Whether he's painting an image of children playing under a...

Where does one truly find inspiration? The directorial debut of Rob Perez, writer of 40 Days and 40 Nights, presses to answer that exact question. Lindeman (played by Sam Rosen), a sculptor with his art school final project in front of him, finds himself simply stumped. He looks for inspiration around every corner, in every scene. This includes the goth scene, the gay scene, becoming an intellect, a lover and a vegan, but nothing seems to be the answer to his artistic existential crisis. He realizes that being a nobody defines somebody. The movie is also accompanied by a musical…...

Bonnie Somerville, one of the stars of ABC's Cashmere Mafia, has booked roles in two feature films.
First up, Somerville faces The Ugly Truth, the Lakeshore-Columbia romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. Robert Luketic is directing. Somerville will play Butler's sister-in-law.
She then will segue to Nobody, an indie black comedy directed by Rob Perez (40 Days and 40 Nights) and exec produced by Josh Hartnett. The movie revolves around a group of self-centered art students; Somerville will play an articulate, pretentious member of the group.
She is repped by ICM and McKeon-Myones Entertainment.
