- A wealthy family faces numerous problems and reunites with their long-lost relatives to pray to their deity for solutions, unaware it will reawaken the feud between a classical dancer, Chandramukhi and Vettaiyan Raja from centuries ago.
- Ranganayaki (Radhika Sarathkumar), the matriarch of a wealthy family, navigates through a series of misfortunes alongside her family members. Her household includes her elder brother (Suresh Chandra Menon), his son (Ravi Mariya) with his family, her younger brother (Vignesh) and his family. She also has four daughters, out of which Gayathri (Subiksha Krishnan), Priya (Srushti Dange) and Divya (Lakshmi Menon) live with her. The family faces a major setback when her elder daughter elopes, and a plane crash kills her and her spouse. Further calamities include a mysterious fire at the family's cotton factory and Divya getting paralyzed in a car accident, postponing her engagement. Seeking solutions, Ranganayaki consults their family astrologer, Guruji (Rao Ramesh), who advises a prayer at their ancestral temple in Vettaiyapuram. The prayer requires the presence of the entire family, including her elder daughter's orphaned children, now under Pandiyan's (Raghava Lawrence) care. Pandiyan (was considered as a brother by Ranganayaki's elder daughter and the kids went to him after her death) is super protective of the kids named Kalam and Ragini and doesn't know that the kids are heirs to a vast estate and wealth. Although hesitant, the family follows Guruji's advice and heads to Vettaiyapuram. It is clear that Ranganayaki is not very connected to the orphaned kids of her eldest daughter.
Upon arrival, they lease the Vettaiyapuram Palace for forty-eight days from its new caretakers, Murugesan (Vadivelu) and Senthil's uncle, and move in despite Murugesan's warning against venturing into the southern part of the palace. Gaaja Lakshmi (Mahima Nambiar) is the daughter of the milkman and lives behind the palace. Pandiyan is smitten by her. Curiosity leads Priya into the forbidden area, where she unwittingly releases Chandramukhi's (Kangana Ranaut) spirit from a Rangoli. Meanwhile, the family discovers their temple in ruins. Rudraiyya (Ayyappa P. Sharma) is the Sengottaiyan's Mahaguru. He meets the family, but says that they are incomplete. He also warns that is the temple is cleaned and lit, it will embolden Vettaiyan, which will never be allowed by Chandramukhi. He says that Chandramukhi is powered by her hatred for Vettaiyan and her vow to get her revenge against him.
Ranganayaki gets close to the kids Kalam and Ragini after Pandiyan admonishes the entire family for banishing their elder daughter while she did everything to protect the respect and dignity of their house and their religion. Pandiyan makes her realize that her daughter and son-in-law would have been alive if she had not banished them. Meanwhile, it is increasingly clear to the family that they share the palace with a para-normal phenomenon.
Pandiyan cleans the temple after the labor assigned to cleaning it meet with a suspicious death. An unfortunate turn of events leads to a fire breaking out within the temple premises. This fire lights up the temple and inadvertently unleashes Vettaiyan's (Shatru) spirit, much to the dismay of Chandramukhi, causing chaos to sweep through the palace. Rudraiyya confronts Pandiyan and tells him that he shares the sun sign of Vettaiyan and only he can break the cycle of Chandramukhi's curse. He further adds that Chandramukhi's spirit had entered a member of the household already. Upon his return, Pandiyan shares the unnerving news with the family that Chandramukhi has possessed one of the women in the household. Murugesan reveals that a similar incident had occurred seventeen years prior. When Guruji arrives, Murugesan elaborates on Ganga's (Jyothika) previous psychological affliction, where she imagines herself as Chandramukhi. However, the real Chandramukhi has resurfaced, escalating the threat.
The family then proceeds to Vettaiyan's courtroom, a significant location where Ramachandra Achariyar and Saravanan had previously exorcised Ganga. Upon inspection, Guruji discerns that someone has already entered the forbidden room, thereby unleashing Chandramukhi's spirit for real. Initial suspicions fall on Priya due to her earlier explorations, but Divya is the person possessed. A miraculous event follows as Divya regains her ability to walk, which elates her but leaves the family in distress. Guruji explains that a bead from Chandramukhi's anklet facilitated Divya's possession that Divya had found lying on the floor and she had worn around her neck, as she had a penchant for collecting antiques.
Guruji warns the family to behave normal around Divya and not to her be aware that she has been possessed. In a twist of fate, Pandiyan stumbles upon a secret room below Vettaiyan's room and becomes possessed. As Chandramukhi still possesses Divya, she attempts to harm Ranganayaki and her nieces and nephews, but Pandiyan's possession by Vettaiyan thwarts her attempts. Delving into the past, Guruji learns from Rudraiyya about the bitter enmity between Vettaiyan and Chandramukhi.
Past: Sengottaiyan (Raghava Lawrence), a commander in King Vettaiyan's army, had conquered the Vijayanagara Kingdom. When King Vettaiyan becomes enamored with a dancer named Chandramukhi's beauty, he sends Sengottaiyan to fetch her for him. Sengottaiyan was smitten by Chandramukhi, whom he forcibly took to Vettaiyapuram. Sengottaiyan wanted Chandramukhi for himself. This ignites a confrontation between him and Sengottaiyan, resulting in Vettaiyan's beheading. Subsequently, Sengottaiyan proclaims himself as king, adopting the name Vettaiyan. Despite her pleas about her love for Gunasekaran (Mithun Shyam), Vettaiyan keeps Chandramukhi captive. He asks Chandramukhi to dress up like a bride and takes her to the clan temple for the wedding ceremony. Gunasekharan visits Chandramukhi later in her chambers and plans to elope with her. Vettiyan finds him. Vettaiyan beheads Gunasekharan, and Chandramukhi is burnt alive. However, she returns as a vengeful ghost, tormenting Vettaiyan to the brink of despair. Unable to bear the torment, Vettaiyan retreats to his secret room, eventually meeting his end through a fatal snake bite.
Present: Through the sage, Pandiyan learns that he became possessed by Vettaiyan after sitting on his throne. A fierce battle unfolds between Divya (possessed by Chandramukhi) and Pandiyan (possessed by Vettaiyan). In a sacrificial act, the sage intervenes to save Pandiyan and ends Chandramukhi's reign of terror. Guruji later reveals to Pandiyan that the sage had collected Chandramukhi's ashes and sealed them in her portrait. The sage, whom Chandramukhi cursed to be beheaded only by her, saw this as an opportunity to end his curse and willingly sacrificed himself to cease the torment. The sage secretly substituted Vettaiyan with himself during the battle and allowed himself to be beheaded by Chandramukhi. Chandramukhi believes that her revenge is complete and leaves Divya's body.
With the spirits laid to rest, Ranganayaki's family finally performs the prayer at their deity temple. Upon completing the prayer, the family departs from the palace with Pandiyan. The ordeal concludes on a hopeful note as Pandiyan reunites with Lakshmi, ending the family's harrowing yet enlightening journey.
