In honor of Juneteenth, we’ve gathered a list of special programming across several networks to commemorate the holiday that celebrates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, and delivered the news that all enslaved people were free. Juneteenth is still not recognized as a federal holiday, but it is recognized by several states — and this year, many companies are declaring it a paid holiday in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and national protesting that has taken place following the death of George Floyd.
This special programming celebrates black history and educates viewers on the history of the black experience in the United States.

A gooey nostalgic look back at that time a young boy’s mom fell in love with their kidnapper, presented under a sexy sweltering summer haze. I’m “biast” (pro): love Reitman, Brolin, and Winslet
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ladies! Single? Lonely? Starved for human touch? Why not get yourself kidnapped and held hostage by an escaped convict? Guaranteed relationship starter!
I kinda couldn’t believe this is where Labor Day goes. I’m kinda dumbfounded it does so without the teensiest sense of irony or even a hint of awareness that this could be problematic. Stockholm syndrome as actually, genuinely, for-reals romantic? Are they kidding us?
They are not kidding us.
I… I can’t even.

Kick-Ass
At this point, is there anything left to say about Kick-Ass? Real people become vigilante superheroes. It's been done before, but this time, it's got a jaw-dropping Hit Girl, a role that's made one Chloe Moretz a sensation. In his review, Todd Gilchrist wrote: "as a full-length film, Kick-Ass is a great comic book come to life, but not much else. A faithful recreation of the rhythms of episodic funny-paper storytelling ... [it] never quite finds enough cohesion or dramatic clarity to become a fully satisfying film." If you're on the fence, you'll want to rent it, but for the rest, Buy it on DVD or Blu-ray

Writer-director Jeb Stuart’s Blood Done Sign My Name is based on the novel of the same name by Tim Tyson, a professor of African-American studies, who lived in the town where the film’s events took place as a child. Tyson and his family are portrayed in the film, but this turns to be a major problem of the film, as their inclusion does not feel necessary– at least with how the film uses them. The Tysons as characters in the film come off as story fat that could of easily been cut off in favor of making a tighter, more properly focused film about the important true story at the center of the film, and the people more directly affected by and involved in the events.

In an interview today in the Chicago Sun Times actor Nate Parker (The Great Debaters, Blood Done Sign My Name) stated that he would never do roles that “emasculate black men” He went on further to say that:
“I’ll go into some inner city to talk to kids and the teacher will say, ‘Here are our kids. They can’t wait to hear you, Nate.’ I’ll say, ‘But what about those kids hanging out on the street outside the school?’
“The teacher will say, ‘Don’t worry about them. We’ll call the cops if they bother us.’ The next thing I always do is leave the classroom and go walk across the street and say, ‘How are you brothers doing?’
“That’s my platform,” says Parker. “I hear, ‘That guy is a movie star, but he cares about us. He doesn’t show us in ways that are bad.

Veteran television actor Ricky Schroder stars in the indie feature Blood Done Sign My Name, which open in theaters February 19th. Based on the Timothy Tyson novel, the film is a true-life civil rights drama set in 1970s. Set in a small town, Schroder portrays a pastor of an all-white Methodist church who tries to get his congregation to live harmoniously with the black community. Zorianna Kit: You came aboard this project at the last minute. Rick Schroder: When the script came in, I had to read it right away because they needed an answer that day. I'd need to be on set in North Carolina in three days. It was an immediate yes for me. You can tell good writing when you read it. It had good dialogue and good characters. Zorianna Kit: The film...

An earnest, studiously straightforward message movie, Jeb Stuart’s Blood Done Sign My Name tries to get by on the strength of its performances and the writer-director’s able skirting of melodramatic clichés. Irony has no place here, aside from the bizarre fact that the maker of a civil rights drama shares his name with one of the most famous Confederate generals.

In adapting the Timothy Tyson’s memoir Blood Done Sign My Name, which details the events surrounding the racially charged murder of an African-American Vietnam veteran in North Carolina in 1970, writer-director Jeb Stuart seems to have sought the most banal and commonplace elements, rather than focusing on the details that might illuminate the past and the present. Stuart, whose writing credits include Die Hard and The Fugitive, splits the movie’s perspective, albeit not evenly, between budding activist Ben Chavis (Nate Parker), later an organizer of the Million Man March and currently Russell Simmons’ business partner, and Tyson’s ...

Since I know I’ll be one of the few people who have actually seen this film, which is getting a small, very limited theatrical release before it’ll eventually come out on DVD, I thought I would at least say a few things about it. So I know that we all have had the experience when someone asks you your opinion about about a recent film and you say: “Yeah…well it was O.K. you know….I mean it’s wasn’t bad but it was….you know….you know….you know…..ah…. It’s all right I guess“ Well that’s how I felt about Blood Done Sign My Name. No bad, not awful, but a perfectly mediocre, tepid movie. It doesn’t stand out in any way, but sort of plods along with no real dramatic tension or drive whatsoever. The kind of film you forget about while watching it.

By Harvey Karten - In 1954 the United States Supreme Court declared racial segregation in the public schools unconstitutional. In 1964, President Johnson, who had more influence with the Congress than the current chief executive, got a major civil rights act passed far reaching and had tremendous long-term impacts on the whole country. It prohibited discrimination in public facilities, in government, and in employment, invalidating the Jim Crow laws in the southern U.S. It became illegal to compel segregation of the races in schools, housing, or hiring.
