Warning: Spoilers ahead. The final moments with Furiosa and Praetorian Jack add significant emotional depth to the narrative. In the run-up to the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, one character was kept more under wraps than the others: Tom Burke’s Praetorian Jack. There was good reason for the secrecy. The new character is introduced about halfway through the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel film as the War Rig driver, known in the Citadel as something of a legend, having done more runs on the Fury Road than anyone else. Jack teaching Furiosa to drive is a key scene,...

In taking on the role of Imperator Furiosa, warrior of the post-apocalyptic Wasteland, the 28-year-old actress brought something ferocious, far beyond what I thought possible, says writer-director George Miller in a new behind-the-scenes featurette shared exclusively with People. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga brings viewers back to the desolate landscapes but this time with a unique narrative twist at its core. Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the boots once worn by Charlize Theron, portraying Furiosa before she became the iconic character known in Mad Max: Fury Road. This prequel answers important questions: Where did Furiosa come from? Why does she have...

Furiosa; The latest movie, in the Mad Max series has made an impact at the box office even though some think it could have done better. There’s no doubt that this prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road will become more popular once its available on home entertainment and streaming services. So, what comes next for this apocalyptic series? George Miller, the creator of the Mad Max world has hinted at some possibilities. In an interview with USA Today, Miller mentioned the idea of a prequel that delves into Max Rockatanskys backstory before Fury Road. Talking about plans Miller said, “There’s a story about Max from the year...

Call it a "Mad Max" rite of passage. Ever since director George Miller's 1979 original introduced the world to the utter absurdity that is post-apocalyptic Australia, the gas-guzzling franchise has all but become a genre unto itself. After five total movies, culminating with this past weekend's "Furiosa," audiences are now well aware of what to expect from these idiosyncratic blockbusters. High-octane action, poignant ruminations on the future of our species, and a motley collection of freaks, weirdos, and badasses are well worth the price of admission alone. As far as series traditions go, however, one deceptively subtle trope returned in full force for "Furiosa."
The "Mad Max" movies have typically brought back many of the same cast members in different roles for the various sequels. For instance, newcomer fans may have been surprised to learn that the man behind the mask of "Fury Road" villain Immortan Joe, Hugh Keays-Byrne, had...

While it’s understood that “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a prequel that leads directly into the events of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” director George Miller said he and his team quite heavily debated the inclusion of footage from “Fury Road” during the “Furiosa” credits.
While “Furiosa” doesn’t exactly have a post-credits scene, there is a montage of footage from Miller’s 2015 epic “Fury Road” that plays during the credits, teasing what happens to the character of Furiosa after the events of the film you just watched — played in “Furiosa” by Anya Taylor-Joy and in “Fury Road” by Charlize Theron. Miller told Collider he and his team debated whether to include this montage “a lot.”

Memorial Day is usually one of the biggest and best weekends at the box office, but the warped year that is 2024 at the box office continued with neither of the new wide releases blowing up. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.

When it comes to a George Miller directed Mad Max saga movie, actors are committed 1000% to the stunts, but composers are there too for the long haul.
So much so, that Furiosa composer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie Xl moved to Sydney, Australia to pen the score, his third with Miller after Mad Max: Fury Road and Three Thousand Years of Longing. In fact, there’s a fine line between the metallic bang of motorcycles and trucks, and bass, and one of the arbitrator of that is Holkenborg who had a hand in sound mixing Furiosa.
You can listen to our conversation with Holkenborg out of Deadline’s Cannes Studio below:
Holkenborg points out that when it came to the music in Furiosa, it’s character-driven given how it centers around the protagonist’s life from 8 to 18 years of age, versus Fury Road, which took place in a desert race of 48 hours.

Henry Cavill’s Argylle suffered tremendously not only at the box office but also in the critic reviews. The spy thriller film helmed by Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn led a promising introduction with its star-studded cast, but even with the tandem of The Witcher star and John Cena, the movie still flopped.

Update: Comscore has just released the official box office results for the 4-day holiday weekend, and despite some box office pundits predicting that The Garfield Movie would top Furiosa, in the end the George Miller epic was able to hold on to a narrow lead. Comscore has Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earning $32 million compared to Garfield‘s $31.1 million. However, it should be noted that The Garfield Movie only cost about a third of what Furiosa did, so it’s unlikely distributor Sony Pictures will chalk up a loss on this one.
Furiosa will depend heavily on foreign receipts if it’s going to break even, with the movie grossing $33 million internationally. Mad Max: Fury Road made a total of $379 million worldwide, a number that the prequel will likely have a hard time equalling unless word of mouth and repeat business are strong. The silver lining for Furiosa is...

Woman Thou Art Loosed: Miller Wades into the Wasteland
In all likelihood, George Miller presumably will be closing out his filmography the same way it began, fleshing out the iconic dystopian desert world he created back in 1979 with Mad Max and its original successive sequels. As fate would have it, a powerful figure rising out of his celebrated 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, would get her own origin story in this universe, which arrives with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Strangely, much like Charlize Theron pulled focus over the titular Tom Hardy in the earlier film, Anya Taylor-Joy is the muted center of her own universe in this installment, thanks in part to a more vivacious, arguably more dynamic role for a new character portrayed by Chris Hemsworth.…...

Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.
“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

Garfield has another reason to hate Mondays.
In a box office nail biter, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” narrowly emerged victorious over “The Garfield Movie” on North American charts. On Sunday, Warner Bros. and Sony both claimed its own movie ranked No. 1 with roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the Memorial Day holiday on Monday.
With Monday’s estimates, “Furiosa” ended up generating $26.2 million over the weekend and $32 million for the four days. “Garfield” was shockingly close behind with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million over the four days.
No matter the final order, it’s the worst Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades — excluding 2020 when theaters were entirely closed due to Covid. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 are particularly tough — down by nearly 36% — given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million, one of the best debuts for the holiday.

The Anya Taylor-Joy starrer Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released earlier this week to positive responses. Though the film seemed to have had a less-than-stellar opening at the box office, most fans seemed to have been impressed with George Miller’s return to the Wasteland. The film is a prequel/spinoff to Mad Max: Fury Road.
Taylor-Joy replaced Charlize Theron in the prequel as a younger Imperator Furiosa. The film follows Furiosa’s childhood in the Green Place and her eventual admission into Immortan Joe’s Citadel. However, a much younger Furiosa was played by Alyla Browne, whose features were reportedly fused with Taylor-Joy’s with AI.

“What do you people out there want?!” a Warner Bros. executive might be forgiven for asking after arguably the worst Memorial Day weekend box office in 40 years. Despite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opening to glowing reviews, glitzy standing ovations at the Cannes Film Festival, and as part of a revered IP franchise whose last installment is considered one the best summer movies ever—Mad Max: Fury Road is a six-time Oscar winner!—the prequel’s box office still marked the lowest debut for a number one Memorial Day release since Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. And that came out in 1984.
Estimated to have grossed $31 million over the four-day weekend (and a meager $25 over the three-day) Furiosa’s first weekend box office bow is playing in the same neighborhood as when Harrison Ford’s archaeologist went to India and and Luke Skywalker fighting Darth Vader was considered a novelty.

Having received a rapturous reception a week earlier in Cannes George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” grabbed a more muted win at the South Korean box office.
“Furiosa” opened with $3.35 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a 39.5% share of the weekend’s total cinema-going market.
The film opened in Korea on Wednesday and topped the daily chart for each of its five days on release. Its cumulative total at the end of its five-day opening period was a solid, but unremarkable, $4.38 million, earned from 564,000 admissions.
The weekend box office total weighed in at $8.48 million, which is close to the median so far this year.

Yet again, a new film sits atop the box-office weekend top ten as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to stave off fellow newcomer The Garfield Movie by a mere $0.7 million to take the top spot prior to the holiday.
In its first weekend of release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga brought in $25.5 million for Warner Bros., allowing it to finish just ahead of Sony Pictures Releasing’s second-place claimant, The Garfield Movie, which brought in $24.8 million during its debut weekend. Meanwhile, this pushed last weekend’s top film If to third place where it added $16.1 million for Paramount Pictures, bringing its two-week tally to $58.7 million. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped two spots as well, landing in fourth place this weekend with $13.4 million. This gives the 20th Century Studios film a three-week total of $122.8 million. Like most, I was absolutely blown away by Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga this weekend. Chris Bumbray perfectly sums up why the film is a great entry into the Mad Max franchise Here. It may have been the trailer playing before the most number of movies in 2024. It was everywhere. Yet it’s hard to watch the film and come away feeling like I saw something completely brand new when the marketing already spoiled so much of it.

Instead of ruling the box office as expected, it’s in a shockingly close race for first place with Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie,” which collected $24.8 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through the four days. Neither could salvage the holiday weekend, which is the worst it’s been in nearly three decades.
It wasn’t just domestic audiences that failed to show up for “Furiosa.” The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories, bringing its worldwide tally to $58.9 million. Tom Burke knows how to play a toxic character, as proven by his work in films like “The Souvenir” and “Mank.” One might think playing a nice guy would come as an enjoyable change of pace for him, but when that nice guy is in a film like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” keeping up with the pace can be its own separate challenge. In a recent interview with GQ, Burke recalls how, despite excitement around the possibility, he initially thought the role of Praetorian Jack — mentor to Furiosa — wouldn’t be one that fit him all that well.
“I thought, I’m not going to get that job,” said Burke, “but wow, that sounds amazing. Cut to my manager saying, ‘George Miller wants to have a chat with you.’ And I was like, ‘When? What’s he seen? ‘Souvenir?’’ I mean look, I’m proud of ‘Souvenir,’ I’m proud of ‘Mank,...

The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers historically for this particular weekend; adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

Soon after James Gunn announced that the Justice League in his new Dcu would be played by an entirely different cast, the fans started to speculate several names. After David Corenswet was cast as the new Superman, the fan-casting for the other members also gained hype.
Gal Gadot gained widespread praise for her portrayal of Wonder Woman in the Dceu. She even had a threequel planned before it was scrapped by James Gunn. Despite being disappointed, the fans have been keen to know who will play the next Diana Prince. Now, it looks like people have come up with a new name who can be perfect in the role- Charlee Fraser.

If you’ve seen “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and noticed an uncanny resemblance between child actor Alyla Browne, who plays the titular character as a child, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who assumes the role as the story skips ahead several years, you’re not alone.
The reason, it seems, involved more than its skillful casting. Director George Miller additionally employed artificial intelligence in the making of his post-apocalyptic prequel to 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which Warner Bros. opened in the U.S. on Friday.
“George Miller had the idea very early on,” explained Taylor-Joy in an interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” “The audience was already getting used to a new Furiosa [Charlize Theron in ‘Fury Road’]. He wanted the transition from both actors [Browne and Taylor-Joy] playing her to be seamless. And so I did two days of the craziest things you could ever possibly imagine. And they mixed our faces together.

Updated: Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was greeted with a very warm reception during its Cannes Film Festival world premiere in an early showcase last week, and amid much love for franchise architect George Miller. It has followed up with strong critical and social scores. Nevertheless, in this currently wonky theatrical landscape, the prequel underperformed in its global opening this launch weekend, grossing $58.9M from 76 total markets through Sunday.
That includes $33.3M from overseas play and $25.6M from domestic; the latter for its Friday-Sunday. We are waiting on confirmation of the four-day North American number given the domestic holiday on Monday.
Yes, we expected higher when we did our preview earlier this week, and perhaps the industry as a whole was praying too much at the feet of this origin story. It’s undeniably got some amazing action.

It has been 45 years since the first Mad Max dropped, and thanks to George Miller, the franchise is still going strong. With Furiosa earning rave early reviews, which serves as a prequel to the last Mad Max entry Fury Road, the Aussie filmmaker opened up about the evolution of technology over the course of the franchise.
From using celluloid analog back in the day to craft The Road Warrior to shifting to digital for the modern installments in the series, there has been a huge leap in technology over the years. And for Furiosa, Miller opened up about getting inspired by Oscar-winner Bong Joon-ho’s technique.

After garnering a cult following during the 2000s, following the success of Barking Dogs Never Bite and Memories of Murder, Bong Joon-ho made history after winning 4 Academy wins for Parasite.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is stalling at the international box office with $33.3 million from 75 territories. The fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series has generated $58.9 million globally in its first weekend of release, a rough start given its $168 million production budget.
Domestically, the Warner Bros. prequel “Furiosa” is closely battling Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” for first place on box office charts, with each grossing roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday. Whichever lands at No. 1, this ranks as one of the worst Memorial Day holiday weekends in decades.
“Furiosa,” at this rate, will struggle to live up to its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.” That film, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, captured $380 million against a similarly big budget. Though the R-rated prequel, which puts the spotlight on Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, has been widely embraced by critics and audiences,...

If you'd expected Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to race away from The Garfield Movie with ease at the U.S. box office this long Memorial Day weekend, guess again. According to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), they're in a dead heat of $31 million over four days and $25 million over three days.
One will ultimately emerge with the win but, as we write this, it's simply too soon to tell.
Critics sunk their claws into The Garfield Movie, something that's evident from its 37% Rotten Tomatoes score. In contrast, Furiosa is "Certified Fresh" at 89%.
Unfortunately, no matter who wins, it appears theaters will once again lose. This is the lowest opening for a Memorial Day weekend in 29 years (when Casper opened with a mere $22 million in 1995).
Where did it go wrong? The trade believes Warner Bros. Discovery waited too long to start hyping Furiosa, with the last leg of the marketing campaign...

Imperator Furiosa has battled ruthless kidnappers, raider attacks and maniacal warlords as she traverses a lawless Wasteland. And yet her fiercest adversary, at least today, seems to be a lazy cat who loves lasagna.
The Warner Bros. high-octane prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is facing off against Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” for first place on box office charts over Memorial Day weekend. Each movie has generated roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Monday. Both studios are reporting that its own movie has ranked No. 1. Whichever pulls ahead, it’ll be the worst Memorial Day opening weekend in nearly three decades.

One of the most anticipated prequel films of all time has to be George Miller‘s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. After the initial announcement back in 2010, the anticipation for the film only grew after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, and nearly 9 years later the film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it will exceed everyone’s expectations.
Based on the characters from Mad Max: Fury Road by Miller, the prequel film is directed by Miller from a screenplay co-written by Nico Lathouris and Miller and it follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is snatched from Green Place of Many Mothers and handed over to the great biker horde’s warlord Dementus as they make their way through the Wasteland and come across the Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. The prequel film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it is as brilliant and bombastic as the original film. Obviously, we are talking about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to George Miller‘s 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Miller from a screenplay by Nico Lathouris and Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is taken from Green Place of Many Mothers and tries to survive in the wasteland while trying to get back home but the war between great biker horde’s warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe makes it harder. Replacing Charlize Theron from Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of Furiosa in the prequel film and it also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, and Nathan Jones. So,...

James Gunn’s Dcu announced the writing team for Max’s Lanterns series on Saturday. The writing team involved DC writer Tom King along with Lost creator Damon Lindelof and Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy. While Gunn gave a hearty welcome to both Lindelof and Mundy, his comments against the Lost creator resurfaced on social media. Gunn had some scathing remarks about Lindelof for ruining the ending of the 2004 series.

This article contains Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga spoilers.
It all begins with a a peach. That is the first thing audiences are asked to bear witness to at the start of George Miller’s long-awaited Furiosa. And it’s this simple luxury for which young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) will soon be cast out of paradise. Never one to make a play toward subtlety, even when he strives for plenty of nuance, Miller knows exactly what kind of loaded comparisons he’s demanding audiences to make. A girl; a red, ripe piece of fruit; and a forbidden act that invites lifelong punishment. Despite being only a child, Furiosa’s action will cause her to be stolen from her mother (Charlee Fraser), her sister, and the beloved Green Place. She will then spend the next 20 years desperate to get back to that land, but as viewers hopefully remember from Mad Max: Fury Road,...

High-octane action sequences, ultra-stylized character design, which contributed to the creation of a dystopian fashion of its own, stunt-heavy spectacles, and enormous set pieces—these are just a few of the aspects that have made Mad Max a cult classic franchise for the last forty years. However, more than anything else, the appeal of the customized, modded-out vehicles, blazing through the deserted landscape and exemplifying an unmatched vigor, is what gave the franchise its iconic status not only among gearheads but also among general viewers as well. Irrespective of what futuristic tech advancements contemporary movies are able to showcase, there is just something raw, wild, and uber-cool about the fine-tuned mean machines of Mad Max movies – growling and revving up to take on each other – which will never get old.

Chandu Champion Trailer Impact At Box Office Day 1. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Very few actors have managed to enjoy a smooth run in the post-pandemic era, and one of them is Kartik Aaryan. The 'Mad Max' franchise was borne out of "limitations", according to George Miller. The 79-year-old director has enjoyed huge success with the film franchise, and George has now admitted that it's been shaped by a lack of resources.George - who helmed the original 'Mad Max' movie back in 1979 - told Sky News: "The first 'Mad Max' was definitely borne out of limitations. It ultimately turned out to be very key to it."The acclaimed director explained that the first movie was originally written as a "contemporary story set in the city of Melbourne". However, a lack of money meant that it was ultimately set in a "dystopian future".George added: "We couldn't afford to have car chases in the middle of the street."We couldn't afford [to have] the extra cars or put stuntmen in those cars. Perhaps Thor got hit in the head with his own hammer. Chris Hemsworth, speaking to Variety in the lead-up to the reveal of his Hollywood Walk of Fame this past week, the Marvel hero and “Furiosa” villain acknowledged the imposter syndrome he feels receiving this honor — especially because he thought he’d already received it in the past.
“I’ll tell you a funny story,” said Hemsworth. “At least I hope it’s funny — it might make me look like an idiot. But I’ll take the risk.”
Hemsworth recalled when he and the cast of “Avengers: Endgame” were asked to cast their handprints in cement outside Tcl Chinese Theater in Hollywood. He said of the event, “I thought that was the Walk of Fame! So when we did it, I thought, ‘Oh cool, I’m getting a star.’ And someone told me, ‘No, that’s not what this is.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

The bad times at the summer box office just keep coming this weekend, as George Miller's post-apocalyptic road epic "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" lines up a historic low for the Memorial Day weekend. After grossing $10.2 million on its opening day (including previews), "Furiosa" is on track for a dismal $31 million four-day weekend (per The Wrap), significantly below the $45.4 million three-day debut of "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015.
