It’s becoming something of a regular refrain around here now: another new behind the scenes reel from Indonesian martial arts film Merantau gives yet another reason to be impressed. The eighth installment of these behind the scenes reels features a fresh wave of production, this batch set in the actual streets and alleys of Jakarta. Yes, director Gareth Evans continues to impress with the way he’s balancing story and action and, yes, star Iko Uwais continues to show that he’s got the goods as a fighter but we knew all of that already. What impresses here are some very complex and effective camera rigs that show Evans has definitely got a few visual tricks up his sleeve. Very nice.

The more I see of Gareth Evans’ upcoming Indonesian martial arts flick Merantau the more impressed I am. He’s locked on to a discipline seldom seen on screen - silat - found a compelling master of the form - Iko Uwais - and then built a solid cast and story around his stars’ skills. The film shows a nice balance of action and drama, character and ass-whuppin, and what we’ve seen of the cinematography and choreography so far has been impressive. Evans and co have been releasing regular behind the scenes reels from the film so far and while previous entries have showcased the performers, the choreography, camera tests and fight sequences with his latest entry Evans has opted to take a quieter route, taking us behind the scenes of the Sumatran leg of the production, when most of the dramatic roots of the film are laid down...

We’ve been tracking the progress of Indonesian martial arts film Merantau - starring silat master Iko Uwais - for a good while now thanks to the behind the scenes videos provided by director Gareth Evans. Now deep into production Evans has a major treat for us this week with an extended look at the creation of the film’s climatic final fight sequence. They’re not giving away the big stuff but what they are showing is looking very impressive.
“Merantau” is an Indonesian martial arts action drama feature due for release April 2009. Written and directed by British filmmaker Gareth Evans the film showcases Silat Harimau, a branch of Indonesia’s ancient martial art of Pencak Silat. With choreography from renowned master Edwel Datuk Rajo Gampo Alam and Team Silat Harimau, “Merantau” will also introduce to the world Indonesia’s rising action star and Silat Tiga Berantai expert, Iko Uwais.

We’ve been tracking the progress of Gareth Evans’ Indonesian martial arts flick Merantau for a good while now, anxious for a good look at the silat martial arts being used in the picture and very seldom seen on screen. Well, Evans has just passed along the latest behind the scenes reel from the film, this fifth installment in the series being the first put together since principal photography began which means this is our first chance to see sets and some raw footage. And what sort of task have Evans and company set for themselves? Well, imagine starting a film shoot with a minute + single take, steady-cam fight sequence as the first shot of the film. Fifty six takes later, it was finally in the can ...

It’s been a few weeks since we last heard from director Gareth Evans and his Indonesian martial arts film Merantau but it’s hard to blame him, really, as he’s been buried deep in active production on the film with principal photography new entering its fourth week. Through the pre-production process Evans was posting regular weekly behind the scenes reels from the film - early efforts covered action choreography, camera and stunt tests and more - and this week, despite being busy with production, he found the time to put together another five minute behind the scenes reel, this one dedicated to introducing us to the film’s main characters and the actors portraying them. And not only does this give us a chance to understand what he’s going for in terms of the drama but most of the interviews were shot in the training room which...

No offense to practitioners of kung fu or, increasingly, muay thai but why is it that of all the martial arts in the world these two so thoroughly dominate the on screen world? We don’t even get karate films any more, never mind some of the smaller, lesser known arts and as much as I love me some kung fu and muay thai films I’d love to get a bit more variety on screen. And this immediately makes upcoming Indonesian martial arts flick Merantau of interest since it focuses on much less exposed fight discipline silat harimau. Here’s the official skinny:
