- One scene shows a bed shaking and you hear a man grunting indicating a couple having sex. There is no nudity but it is heavily implied that the sex is not consensual.

- During one scene, Shug Avery and Albert (Mister) dance together and begin undressing each other. Scene is brief and no nudity is shown.
- During Shug Avery's performance, couples on the dance floor dance in a sexual manner.

- This is quite a dark/disturbing as the story deals with serious topics, such as sexual abuse, incest, rape, domestic and intimate partner abuse, racism in the Jim Crow South, sexism, adultery, incarceration, and poverty.

- Scene Depicting Mister and Celie Shug Avery and Celie kiss in one scene.
- As part of her journey, Celie encounters many types of violence - including sexual violence inflicted by her father and her husband. No explicit scenes are shown but there's a few mentions of this throughout the movie. For book readers - sexual violence on other minor characters is mostly omitted.
Violence & Gore
- One part of the movie a fight breaks out at a party and is slightly violent but isn't shown that long.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- One upsetting scene where a black woman tries defending herself but gets harassed and circled by white men. It is brief but upsetting and intense. Later on we can see that the woman was heavily injured.
