- Donald Ferguson, who's under Mary's watch, dies in a suspicious car accident and it is up to Mary and Marshall to find out if it was just an accident or if it has something to do with the O'Connor family from his old life when he was known as Donald Fraser. Meanwhile, Brandi continues to flirt with Raphael despite Jinx warning her not to.—Anonymous
- When federal witness, Donald Ferguson, is believed to have been killed in a car fire, and Mary discovers that the body isn't his, the marshals, with help from Detective Dershowitz, try to figure out who actually died in the fire, and what happened to their missing protectee.—Lynne Boris Johnston
- In a church in Boston sixteen months ago. A husband and wife tell a priest they can't stand each other. On this they agree. They run a soup kitchen and attend mass every day. The priest recommends a romantic weekend. The husband wants an annulment. The priest says no. "Why not? The Kennedys do it all the time," Don complains. They leave, mulling the idea of divorce, but not wanting to burn in hell. As they resign themselves to a life of unhappiness together, a man walks into the priest's office and they hear shouting as a man tells the priest to leave his son alone.
They walk in just in time to see the man shoot the priest. The man turns on them, knocking Don down. The man's about to fire on him when Ruth comes to his rescue, knocking the man out with a candle holder. She recognizes the man is Joseph Connor, the biggest racketeer in Boston.
Ruth and Don enter the witness protection agency.
Cut to a soup kitchen in Albuquerque present day. Ruth and Don work with the homeless. Mary walks in with a box of gifts for them. Don and Ruth seem to be getting along, but they still can't stand each other. Mary doesn't understand why they don't get divorced. Don says its not for him to question God.
Jinx is at work at the bar. Brandi drinks at the bar with her mom. She wonders if ripened limes turn into lemons or the other way around. She also wonders if Mary's trying to push her and Raphael together. Jinx suggests Brandi never test that theory.
Mary and Raphael eat dinner at a nearby table. She tries to patch things up from his recent marriage proposal, then Marshall calls with bad news: Don's been killed in an accident. They head to the scene.
Detective Dershowitz meets them. He says its hard to ID the body because it's so charred. Mary can't think of anyone who would want to hurt him. Mary thinks it's an accident, but they should move Ruth just in case.
Mary breaks the news to Ruth. She says he was a good man and she wishes they'd never met. He could have been happy with someone else. Ruth doesn't want to leave, because she's worried about how the folks at the soup kitchen will react. Ruth says she'd leave the program before she'd relocate, she refuses to abandon them.
Brandi and Raphael hang out. He rhapsodizes about playing baseball. She stares at him moonily.
Inside the bar, a guy comes in with a flyer for auditions for the musical "Sweet Charity." Jinx is excited about auditioning but the bar manager psyches her out.
Back outside, Brandi gives Raph the family history. Jinx used to be a great dancer until life happened, and dad was a gambler. He won the car they're sitting in. She leans over to the glove compartment right near Raph's lap to get the registration. They share a crotch-proximity moment. The phone rings. It's Jinx, telling Brandi she better not be doing what she thinks she's doing. Brandi says she'll see him tomorrow to pick him up for physical therapy. She suggests lunch and a movie. He tells her he doesn't think that's a great idea because he doesn't want to cross the line. Brandi is upset and drives off.
At the hospital, Ruth goes to ID her husband. They warn her the burns are extensive. She says good-bye. "I hope you know that even though I couldn't stand you, I do love you."
The doctor tells it might be some comfort to know he wouldn't have lived much longer anyway. His liver was shot. He was a raging alcoholic. Ruth says Don never drank. It's not him.
Mary and Marshall confer. Joseph Connor is still in jail, but his sons are nowhere to be found. They spitball theories. "Who can know the inner workings of the criminal mind?" Marshall posits. "Isn't that kind of our job?" Mary says.
Mary stops by to pick up Raph as planned. But she can't stick around to pick him up. His phone rings. Mary sees that it's Brandi. Mary tries to talk to Raph about being more open with him. His cell phone rings again, interrupting her honest, open moment. She asks if he needs to answer. He ignores it, then his house phone rings. He answers and gets an earful from Brandi about how it's not fair they can't do something fun after all she's done to take care of him. This is probably the line Raph was worried about crossing. Raph suggests the three of them go out. Brandi says if they wait for Mary to be available, they'll never go. Brandi's call waiting beeps. It's Mary, calling from Raph's living room, wanting to know what's up with her sister and her boyfriend.
Brandi is upset that first her mom, and then her sister, thinks she'd sleep with her sister's boyfriend -- never mind that she appears to totally want to. Mary yells at her, gets fed up and leaves.
Raph comes back into the living room to see Mary has left. And Brandi is now mad at Raph, too, for acting like it's her fault.
Back at the accident scene, Dershowitz calls in a tracker to follow the footprints leading away from the crash. One guy, about six foot tall, walked off. He was wounded. The tracks stop and show signs of a struggle and that the guy was probably pushed into a car with a flat rear tire.
Mary and Marshall stop by the soup kitchen, where the homeless are getting dressed to go pray at the church. Mary wants to know why Don would have called the shelter the night before and talked to someone for three minutes. Ruth mentions a regular named Phil has been missing since last night.
At the bar, Jinx stares longingly at the audition notice. The bartender talks to her about how hard it is to grow up and let go of dreams.
Back at the soup kitchen, Mary finds a dusty car in the parking lot. It has a bald tire. It belongs to Pete, a cook at the soup kitchen who has a bit of a crush on Ruth. He swears he didn't do anything wrong, that he didn't hurt Don. Dershowitz has found blood and tons of evidence in the car. Mary threatens Pete.
Pete says Don's car was stolen and he saw it veer off the road and crash. Don tried to help the guy, but it was too late. Don called Pete to bring a first aid kit and had him drop him off at the free clinic. Don told Pete never to tell anyone. They don't believe him. They arrest him.
Ruth calls, hysterical. Phil the homeless guy has shown up and just told Ruth that Don really is dead.
At the bar, Jinx calls to sign up for the auditions.
Mary goes to talk to Phil, whose meds haven't quite kicked in. He says Don came to the church and they prayed. Then Don died. Mary tries to learn where his body is. Phil keeps repeating that Don's in heaven. He starts pointing upward in the church. Mary asks Phil if he helped Don die. He says he helped put Don in heaven.
Mary now thinks Phil might have killed him. She climbs up the church tower and finds a pair of bloody legs. Then Don sits up and shushes her.
He tells Mary about his crisis of faith six years ago, when he started attending church multiple times a day and that's how he met Ruth. Don thinks faking his death was God's will, that he spoke to him through the burning Jeep, maybe for wont of a bush.
Brandi talks to her mom, saying nothing's going on with Raphael. Then he calls and tells her they can't be friends anymore. For a friend, she looks like she just got dumped.
Back at the church, Mary helps Don out of the church's back door, keeping his cover. He watches Ruth and Pete hug as he drives off, happy that his wife might be getting a boyfriend.
