Steven Spielberg created one hell of a revenge movie in 2005’s Munich, which was based on George Jonas’ book Vengeance. The film (and the book) was a fictionalized version of the real-life assassinations that followed the killing of Israeli athletes in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. It was one of Spielberg’s most controversial films as Mossad condemned the portrayal of their assassins in the film.

The Jaws director is unapologetic about the criticism that his film faced. He shared that he wanted the conversation to take place surrounding the themes of the film. Interestingly, it was one of the lowest-grossing Spielberg films in the United States.

From the opening of Yamamoto Satsuo’s first entry in the Shinobi series, Band of Assassins, we’re thrust into a tangled web of battling clans, all vying to be the first to kill bloodthirsty warlord Oda Nobunaga (Wakayama Tomisaburô). Even within individual factions, duplicity reigns supreme, with all the double crosses and dual identities obfuscating and complicating the motives of every virtually every major character. The film tends toward convolution through the flurry of personal and clan names constantly being introduced, but this tactic of disorientation is ultimately a deliberate and effective one that’s very much in line with the tactics deployed by its ninjas.
Among all these embittered and embattled clans is Ishikawa Goemon (Raizo Ichikawa), a highly skilled young ninja looking to quickly rise through the ranks. Like many of the lower-level ninjas and samurai in Band of Assassins, he, too, falls victim to the Machiavellian...

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is the latest auteur making the migration to television. He previously dabbled in serialized narratives by directing all six episodes of the 2018 BBC spy thriller mini-series "The Little Drummer Girl." Adapting a John Le Carré novel, famous for their intricate plots, for his second English-language work? Park's pulled off that and more.
This year, Park co-created "The Sympathizer," a Vietnam War satire starring Robert Downey Jr. and Hoa Xuande. Adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen's 2015 novel (and Pulitzer winner), Park also directed the series' first three episodes. Most recently, it's been confirmed that he's producing a TV remake of his most famous film: 2003 revenge thriller "Oldboy."

Exclusive: Chinese streaming giant iQIYI is involved in a legal row after featuring Korean masterpiece Oldboy in its library for at least six years without a proper license.
iQIYI is one of the biggest streaming services in the world, with more than 100M subscribers, but the company has faced a legal claim from Oldboy’s London-based distributor Celsius Entertainment.
Deadline understands that lawyers acting for Celsius and Oldboy producer Egg Films contacted iQIYI last August to allege that the streaming service had breached copyright after its license for the film expired in 2016.

To call the Elden Ring Dlc highly anticipated would be an understatement, as fans have been waiting for Shadow of the Erdtree to arrive since it was announced last year. Where the base game won the Game of the Year award, the expansion seems to be gearing up towards being an epic tale itself, and judging from the amazing quality of previous Soulslike Dlc from Hidetaka Miyazaki’s studio, players should have a lot to look forward to.

Starz is bringing one of its foundational original series — along with one of its characters — back to life.

Series creator Steven S. DeKnight will serve as showrunner, and Nick Tarabay will reprise his role of Ashur from the former series.
“A decade ago the groundbreaking original Spartacus captivated viewers worldwide and we’re excited to deliver more enthralling, high-octane drama that our fervent fans have been anticipating,” said Kathryn Busby, president original programming at Starz. “It is an honor to team up with Steven again as he expands upon the storytelling within this thrilling,...

Byron Allen’s Freestyle Digital Media has picked up La Soga 3: Vengeance, starring Manny Perez as a justice-seeking hitman.
Freestyle plans a digital release to start Dec. 12, 2023, for the Spanish-language crime-focused action thriller that Perez directs and which also stars Ana Lapointe and Felix German as part of a mostly Latino ensemble cast.

The new Netflix thriller is proof that Korean storytellers still have it when it comes to revenge tales. I’m not sure why they’re so keen on this genre, but it seems to have worked grossly well for them since time immemorial. Going all the way back to the Vengeance trilogy and the most recent popular show, The Glory, it’s a subgenre that mostly finds success. Although you can’t really call Mask Girl original because, at the end of the day, every little detail of the show feels somehow familiar, it is the way it is presented that makes it unique. Mask Girl follows Kim Mo-Mi, an ordinary office worker by day and a cam-girl by night who gets embroiled in a murder mystery because of her night job. Mo-Mi’s story is poignant right from the start. She’s the ugly duckling that nobody wants anything to do with.

The finer details of George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy were anything but set in stone when the Maker first outlined his grand space fantasy saga back in the ’70s. Take the shifting relationship between Luke and Leia in across all three installments, for example, or the differences between the Emperor in the movies and his backstory in the novelization of A New Hope. In the rough draft of The Empire Strikes Back by Leigh Brackett, Lando was a clone, a veteran of the mythical Clone Wars, instead of Han’s smooth-talking counterpart. Then there all the ways Return of the Jedi changed during the writing process, and in the pivotal story meetings between Lucas and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan that would decide the fate of the galaxy.

The inaugural Hudson Film Festival in Hudson, NY will premiere the 20th anniversary remastered edition of Park Chan-wook’s classic film “Oldboy” this August. In partnership with Neon, the premiere will be in advance of the film’s theatrical re-release on Aug. 16.
Founded by John Maybee, Sarah Peters, and Sonia Marcela Freeman, the festival will take place Aug. 11-13; their website states that the festival “serves as a platform to champion and showcase underrepresented local and global films, filmmakers, artisans and talent.”
The festival co-founders said in a joint statement, “As devotees of Director Park and Neon, we are ecstatic and honored to have been chosen as the only festival to screen ‘Oldboy’ prior to its 20th Anniversary theatrical relaunch.”

The history of Marvel Comics would look a lot different without Christian Cooper.
Then credited as “Chris Cooper,” the New York-based comics nerd and Marvel die-hard was the company’s first openly gay writer and editor. In the 1990s, Cooper worked on Marvel fare that included characters like Ghost Rider, Werewolf by Night, and Vengeance. He also created Victoria Montesi, Marvel’s first openly lesbian character, and was an associate editor for Alpha Flight #106: the issue in which Northstar came out of the closet.
While comics were his first love, they were never his only love. Cooper is also an avid birder who likes to frequent Central Park, binoculars in hand, looking for warblers, sparrows, doves, and the like. It’s because of that particular interest that the recent history of the United States itself would look a lot different without Christian Cooper as well.

One cannot understate the pop culture stir caused by Matt Reeves' 2008 film "Cloverfield." Co-produced by TV impresario J.J. Abrams, "Cloverfield" employed an effective marketing campaign wherein information was widely withheld from audiences, to the point where many couldn't tell you exactly what the film was about. There were rumors at the time that "Cloverfield" might be a stealth Godzilla movie, a Voltron film, or some other major franchise picture marketed in disguise. Others began to form elaborate plots in their minds, positing that the unseen monster in the "Cloverfield" previews might actually denote a larger, interdimensional conspiracy story.
As it turns out, the monster was merely a giant monster. The only striking and novel thing about "Cloverfield" was that it was a found-footage kaiju film, ostensibly shot in a shaky, handheld style by one of the characters within the movie. The shakiness of the film's camerawork reportedly made some audiences seasick,...

"More often than you think, the culprit is right under your nose." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie dark comedy called Susie Searches, opening in select theaters this July. The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also stopped by the Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, and Cleveland Film Festivals. An awkward college student with a failing true-crime podcast seizes the opportunity to bolster her popularity by solving the mysterious disappearance of the campus heartthrob. It's yet another riff on the "true crime" craze now, specifically a podcast, and how far people will go.T his trailer drops a big reveal - but I think it's necessary to bring more attention to it. The film stars Kiersey Clemons as Susie, Alex Wolff, Jim Gaffigan, Rachel Sennott, Ken Marino, and David Walton. I also recommend watching Bj Novak's Vengeance, about the pitfalls of chasing these kind of stories.

Jim Brown, the NFL titan who appeared in “The Dirty Dozen,” many Blaxploitation films plus Oliver Stone’s “Any Given Sunday,” “The Running Man,” Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks” and Spike Lee’s “He Got Game,” to name a few, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 87.
His wife Monique posted the news of his death on Instagram, saying, “He passed peacefully last night at our L.A. home.”
In nine extraordinary seasons as a fullback with the Cleveland Browns, Brown set an array of NFL records. In 2002, The Sporting News named him the greatest professional football player ever. That phenomenal athleticism and a charismatic personality made him bankable as the first African American action star.
“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Monique and their family,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Jim Brown was a gifted athlete — one of the most dominant players to...

Neon is returning “Oldboy ” to theaters just in time for its 20th anniversary.
Park Chan-wook’s acclaimed and influential psychological thriller will return to U.S. theaters August 16. It debuted in five theaters in March 2005 (it opened in South Korea in November 2003) and at its peak played in just 28 auditoriums for a domestic total of $707,481 before finding a cult fandom. It can be presumed that this theatrical reengagement will play a bit wider than the first release.
A loose remake of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi’s Japanese manga of the same name, “Oldboy” stars Choi Min-sik as a general lout of a human being who is mysteriously kidnapped and kept in a single room for 20 years before being just as randomly released from captivity. He has no idea who took him or why, but he is unleashed back into the world with little to live for save for revenge and moral absolution.

The concept of action movies starring female protagonists was quite prevalent in East Asian cinema during the 70s and 80s but toned significantly down after that. However, lately, and as the epicenter of action movies moved towards Asean countries, it surfaced once more, as the fact that women can also can add an element of sex appeal to the action worked for a number of filmmakers. At the same time, the concept was not restricted to action movies, but also extended to art ones, as a couple of the movies in the following list will eloquently highlight.
Without further ado, here are 40 Asian movies where the action mostly derives from women, in chronological order.
1. Come Drink With Me
