Here's a bitchy theory that I might believe in: Straight men usually aren't very socially intuitive thinkers, so they rarely relate to comic performers who don't, to a certain degree, resemble them. I notice in standup and on Twitter that a majority of straight male comics build their fanbase by specifically proving they relate to their fans, who are largely also straight and male. This, I feel, is the opposite tactic of the comics who are more often adored by gay men and straight women. We tend to like standout performers who represent themselves first and seem to say, "F*ck you if you don't relate to me." We value independence over like-mindedness, and that's why defiant personalities like Madonna, Kathy Griffin, and Bette Davis can be catnip to many of us. (I certainly subscribe to all three of those dames.)

With 2010 now behind us, we can look back at the year in movies…and every year since Edison invented a camera and filmed his assistant sneezing, there have been a fair share of cinematic stink-bombs. In fact, this year appears to have been a bumper crop for crap.
Although the official announcement of Razzie (razzies.com) nominations for 2010 won't be released until later this month, a list of likely candidates is already available on their website, though with all due respect to the Razzies, we'd add the caveat that not all the films listed below are complete stinkers.
Where available, we've added Rotten Tomatoes critics' consensus underneath for your convenience and/or edification—so you might want to bookmark this page on your mobile device as a heads-up of what to avoid the next time you find yourself at the video rental store.
This year, the worstiest of the worst according to razzies.

January is widely known as the worst month for movies. While you're busy trying to catch up on the best of the best before awards season, the studios unload their crap. This past January we got garbage like 'Leap Year,' 'Crazy on the Outside' and 'The Spy Next Door'; and that's just to name a few.
When you're getting miss after miss, it's easy to overlook the fact that the first month of the year isn't all the bad. No, January isn't anything like November or December when all of the Oscar potentials hit, but there have been quite a few January films in recent years that are viable sources of entertainment and, in some cases, even well made movies.
2003
'City of God'
Apparently being released at the end of the year isn't vital to being nominated for Academy Awards.

So far I've collected six separate 2010 compilation videos looking back at the this year's collection of films. To the best of my knowledge, these six videos include clips from 303 films and together they total 34:34. I have included the complete list of films on the second page if you are interested. Let me know if I'm missing any, but I think it's pretty safe to say if you liked a film in 2010 one of these following videos will feature it.
So, have a watch and leave your thoughts on which one is your favorite in the comments below and if you find another one online that I should add to the collection shoot me an email.

If you were trapped under a rock this year (it happens) take six minutes to watch this YouTube short. Half music video, half trailer remix, “Filmography 2010″ cuts together the year’s hits, flops and everything in between to catchy music.
Even if you’re a jaded movie buff who hates year end schmaltz, the recap should pluck your heartstrings. So many great and touching moments this year, it’s enough to make you wonder how the Golden Globes managed to totally blow their nominations.
But we digress. Check out the video after the jump.

Every December these ‘best of the year’ video montages make the last 12 months of cinema seem infinitely more pleasant to sit through than they actually were. Here’s the first of many that are sure to be made before the sand in the hourglass runs out on 2010, this one from a gal going by the name of Gen I, who sent in this effort to /film.
There’s 270 movies in this montage below ranging from all the well known blockbusters, to smaller docs, foreign fare and even some Japanese anime! I can’t begin to imagine how long or how much skill it takes to put something as high-quality as this together…

Now that we're about two weeks till the end of 2010, the film industry will be looking back to figure out the best movies of the year and will pick winners during the many awards shows. Today, we have a video that captures 2010 pretty well by showing scenes from the year's 270 films, including some that have yet to hit theaters. There will likely be plenty more of these montages in the next few weeks, but the video is definitely one of the better ones that I have seen. Check out the six-minute video below, in addition to a full list of all the films that were used. Questions: How many of the films listed did you actually see in full? It's getting closer and closer to the end of the year, and we've already seen a couple top 10 lists and critic choice awards announced. Since we began posting "best of the year" video montages a few years back, it seems a lot of new wannabe video editors have emerged. Maybe the software has become cheaper or more accessible, or maybe the coverage on sites like /Film and other movie blogs garnered interest in the task. Last year I received a dozen or so best of videos, most of them were not anything we would share on the site. I think we posted three in total last year, two of which were created by video editors we've featured in previous years [1]. Today I was sent the first "best of 2010" video montage of the season, from a video editor named Gen I. I'll admit that while I was expecting the worst, I came out pleasantly surprised.

Sad news has come from Kelsey Grammer. In a statement to Radar Online, the "An American Carol" actor revealed that his girlfriend Kayte Walsh suffered a miscarriage, stating "We lost our unborn child about six weeks ago."
Now that Kelsey and Kayte are losing their first child together, the mourning pair said, "We would like to thank all of those who expressed kindness and concern but we needed a little time to heal, time to find some solace before we publicly acknowledged our loss."
Back in August, just over a month after his wife of 13 year Camille Donatacci filed for divorce, Kelsey first confirmed that Kayte was pregnant. The "Crazy on the Outside" actor at that time said, "We're very happy and we'd just like to ask, now that the news is out, to respect our privacy and celebrate with us. We wanna keep the baby!"

There are certain stars that seem to burn brightly when given brief exposure, and yet may fade or twinkle less when overexposed. Sometimes, with just a cameo or a secondary, even tertiary role, an actor's presence is like a welcome fresh breeze. It's like tapas, a perfect sampling of their talent and verve that never overstays its welcome.
The following 12 actors are pretty awesome when nibbled as amuse bouche. I'm recognizing the greatness of these actors in ensemble pieces, roles with less screen time, or even just bit parts. That's not to say all of them should never have leading roles. That's not to say that there haven't been better cameo performances. It's just that when shining in brief glimpses, these actors and actresses tend to be at the top of their game.
Kevin Spacey: Moon, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Glengarry Glen Ross
Jack Black: Anchorman, Run Ronnie Run,...

Funnyman Tim Allen was nervous ahead of his directorial debut "Crazy on the Outside" because he was intimidated about ordering around Sigourney Weaver on the film set. The comedian recruited Weaver for the crime drama, but kept imagining her as tough "Aliens" character Ellen Ripley.
He says, "She's big, she's tall, she's scary. She's Ripley for crying out loud! She stabs aliens!" And Allen admits he's embarrassed looking back at his attempts to prove his directorial skills, comparing himself to a young girl, saying "My voice (would) get in that (high octave), 'Um, you know, it would be great if... I don't know why I'm talking like a little girl'."
On his first time to helm a film, Tim Allen previously said that Kevin Costner has helped him. He shared, "I've got a lot on the line here. I financed this thing - private financing. I used Kevin Costner's model.

Funnyman Tim Allen was nervous ahead of his directorial debut Crazy On The Outside - because he was intimidated about ordering around Sigourney Weaver on the film set.
The comedian recruited Weaver for the crime drama, but kept imagining her as tough Aliens character Ellen Ripley.

Since Tim Allen is the most famous ex-convict ever to star on a popular, long-running family sitcom, it doesn’t seem entirely insane to expect 2010’s Crazy On The Outside—a little-seen, barely released comedy about the wacky travails of a man recently released from prison—to be personal or idiosyncratic, or at the least mark a tiny progression from Allen’s work on Home Improvement or the Santa Clause movies, especially since it also marks his long-non-awaited directorial debut. Those hopes die roughly three minutes into the film, as Allen spits out lazy, canned one-liners as his character ...

Recently, I bought a ticket to a movie that wound up costing me the most tedious 96 minutes of my life in recent memory. Those are the breaks when you review movies for a living - sometimes it's a crap shoot, and sometimes it's just plain crap. But while the ins and outs of Tim Allen's latest old man vanity project are neither here nor there, and I thought/hoped I'd never give Crazy on the Outside another waking thought after that day, one peculiar plot point came up again as I read this New York Times piece on the poor, Internet-happy schlub who got busted for posting a work print of Wolverine online. This man, this Gilberto Sanchez from the Bronx, is in danger of turning into Tim Allen.
Let me explain: In his directorial debut, Tim Allen leads Sigourney Weaver, Ray Liotta, and J.K. Simmons in the story...

You know, I guess I forget that baby boomers like watching movies, too. As a superfan of Galaxy Quest, I was really looking forward to a reunion for Sigourney Weaver and Tim Allen. Allen showed some talent recently in Redbelt, so I hoped in his directorial debut he might throw me a little edge. Sadly, it was not to be. Instead, he put forward a generic, safe, romantic comedy of errors penned by two producers of "According to Jim." Crazy On the Outside isn't necessarily a bad movie as much as it's formulaic and boring. It's a toothless, vapid comedy softboiled until it's a melodramatic PG-13 that relies on pelvic thrusts and inanimate object winking to get mild chuckles. Allen doesn't do much behind the camera other than point and shoot, which is kind of what he's doing in front as well in a movie that was obviously penned for...

With the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards airing next weekend comes both the first major ceremony for critics to honor Hollywood this decade and “the worst of their careers” for some actors. According to Indiewire.com, one actor who saw his newest movie flop during its first weekend of release was Tim Allen. Crazy on the Outside teamed Allen with his Wild Hogs co-star Ray Liotta, and was released through Freestyle Releasing. The Home Improvement star’s directorial debut earned a dismal $75,450 from the 75 screens it premiered on. Meanwhile, the Weinstein Company, who had previous hits with Clerks II and Inglourious Basterds, unveiled its wide release Youth in Revolt, starring Michael Cera. [...]...

Dude here again. I'm getting into the swing of this new year. I've even kept my New Year's Resolution and refrained from making "I haven't _______ since last year!" jokes! Well, I haven't made any in the column yet. And that example doesn't count.
And I haven't made a joke about that in my column since Two years ago!
This weekend, new movies were released and none of them made any sort of impact upon the unstoppable blue monster. Let's go to the numbers, shall we? (All in millions, remember, and these are the studio estimates. The actuals will be available on Monday).
1. Avatar (Fox) $48.5, 3422 screens, week 4, $429.0 total 2. Sherlock Holmes (WB) - $16.6, 3626 screens, week 3, $165.1 total 3. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (Fox) - $16.3, 3641 screens, week 3, $178.1 total 4. Daybreakers (Lgf)- $15.0, 2523 screens, week 1, $15.0 total 5. It's Complicated (Uni)- $11.0, 2955 screens, week 3, $76.3 total 6. Leap Year (Uni) - $9.1, 2511 screens, week 1, $9.1 total 7. The Blind Side (WB) - $7.7, 2880 screens,...

Three new studio films opened this week, each hoping to make some sort of dent in “Avatar’s” reign. They didn’t even come close. The horror/sci-fi entry “Daybreakers” came the closeset, but even so it barely sniffed the champ’s jock strap with a $15 million dollar debut, just good enough to give it the fourth spot at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates. Other new films, the Amy Adams romantic comedy “Leap Year” and the Michael Cera coming-of-age drama/comedy “Youth in Revolt” opened at sixth and ninth place, respectively. Two other new indie films, “Crazy on the Outside” and “Sweetgrass” (which only opened in one screen) failed to make any sort of impression on the box office. In its fourth week, James Cameron’s “Avatar” has already surpassed every film in history except one — Cameron’s own “Titanic”, which after 13 years, still remains the worldwide...

While “Avatar” continued its staggering reign at the top of the charts - hitting the $400 million mark and then some - the specialty box office was generally unspectacular with few notable debuts and a bunch of awards-hungry holdovers trying to hang in there until Oscar nominations. Fox's "Avatar" avalanche piled boxoffice higher than any other film for a fourth consecutive weekend, with an estimated $48.5 million tally in the latest frame producing a $429 million domestic cume.
Doubly deep foreign grosses give James Cameron's sci-fi epic a $1.34 billion worldwide cume, the second-highest in history after the filmmaker's "Titanic," which cruised to $1.84 billion in 1997-98. Its domestic total is the seventh-best ever after 24 days of release.
The weekend's three wide releases bowed further down the session rankings.
-- Lionsgate's vampire actioner "Daybreakers," starring Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke, rung up $15 million in fourth place.
-- Universal's romantic comedy "Leap Year," starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode, debuted roughly as expected with $9.2 million in sixth place.
-- Dimension Films' Michael Cera-toplined comedy "Youth in Revolt" unspooled limply, with $7 million in ninth place.

St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.
Despite a critical drubbing, the core audience of young British teenage girls seemed to be satisfied by...

Generally speaking, when a comedy hits theaters to the moviegoers surprise, having not heard of the film, it’s a good sign the movie isn’t very good. There are exceptions, but Crazy On The Outside really isn’t one of them. That’s not to say Tim Allen’s directorial debut doesn’t have it’s own merits, it just simply doesn’t succeed on those merits.
Written by Judd Pillot and John Peaslee, both of whom are television writers having most recently worked on the sitcom According To Jim, this helps to explain why the film often feels a bit like a made-for-tv movie. Crazy On The Outside’s most devastating flaw is that this style of writing just doesn’t fair well for a feature film. Add that the flow of the story is disjointed and the humor is hit and miss, and what you end up...

The first batch of 2010 releases hit theatres today, and as always, there are some questionable ones. However, it seems like both Daybreakers and Youth in Revolt have the potential to rise above the usual January dreck as early reviews have been mostly positive. Daybreakers is a sci-fi action film about a future world where vampires are running out of supplies of fresh blood (ie. humans). Youth in Revolt is a Michael Cera comedy based on the novel by C.D. Payne. Other new movies include the Amy Adams rom-com Leap Year, Tim Allen's directorial debut Crazy on the Outside, and the throwback female exploitation flick Bitch Slap, which is playing in just 3 theatres but also available on VOD. What will you be checking out this weekend? Daybreakers [1] Youth in Revolt [2] Leap Year [3] Bitch Slap [4] (limited) Crazy on the Outside [5] (limited) Waiting for Armageddon [6] (limited) Wonderful World [7] (limited) [1] http://www.imdb.

Leap Year Thanks to a Bing search Leap Year is the number one movie on the site at the moment and I would love to be there when the interested masses see this movie. It is awful. It's one of those films Manhola Dargis sharpens her knives over, take for example this line from the synopsis: "Investing in an Irish tradition that allows women to propose to men on February 29th, Anna decides to follow her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to Dublin and get down on one knee herself." All the ladies in the audience, what do you think about the convenience of a day that comes around once every four years that allows you to propose to a man? Pretty snazzy deal eh? Just remember, to take advantage of it you have to fly to Dublin to do it. For the full report check out my review fo the film right here.

Shanghai
Opens: 2010
Cast: John Cusack, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chow Yun-Fat
Director: Mikael Hafstrom
Summary: In the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, an American man arrives in Shanghai to find his friend recently murdered. In investigating his friend's death, he stumbles upon a secret the United States government has been keeping and falls in love in the process.
Analysis: After being granted permission to shoot in the Chinese city, the $10 million production found its permit quickly being revoked by the Government who expressed concerns about the script. The result is Bangkok and the United Kingdom standing in for the real Shanghai which seems kind of against the entire point.
Cusack himself has emphatically endorsed the project in interviews, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", but being stuck at the cash-strapped Weinstein Company means that its release plans are unsure beyond a vague promise of a limited bow around Easter.

Cast: Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif, Hichem Yacoubi, Reda Kateb
Director: Jacques Audiard
Summary: Sent to prison, Malik El Djebena falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the 'missions' go by, he toughens himself and wins their confidence but uses his intelligence to discreetly develop his own network.
Analysis: Finally scoring a limited release in the Us in February, Jacques Audiard's violent and hard-edged prison drama won the Grand Prix at Cannes, scored Best Film at the London Film Festival, and is already the hotly tipped favourite to take the Oscar for Best Foreign Film late next month.
Reviews have been stellar around the world for the film which quickly became the most universally admired entry in the often hotly contentious first week of Cannes back in May. From a breakout performance by Tahar Rahim,...

The most distressing month in America probably isn’t November or December, when the big Oscar dogs come out in full force with their pride on their sleeves, only to be shot down or embraced by critics or audiences alike. I’d argue the most stressful month in Hollywood is the wet fart that is January, where Hollywood exhales whatever material it has left over from summer or fall or dates, or even worse, releases material not “fit” for either. While the holiday season apparently works like “everyday is Saturday” for the box office, January is the opposite – everyday is like Tuesday morning. The motivation to see movies isn’t there as much.
However, movies have always provided a safe haven for its returning viewers. As some of you may know, this was a great year for the American box office. I’m sure some of that enthusiasm is going to continue,...

Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The Last Airbender

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Hippie Hippie Shake
Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Opens: January 1st 2010
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley
Director: Christian Alvart
Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the...

Tim Allen has his directorial debut in the form of Crazy on the Outside. The new trailer was released on Yahoo last night and it looks like it could be a pretty funny movie. The all-star cast includes Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Ray Liotta, Julie Bowen and Kelsey Grammer.
The storyline consists of Allen’s character, Tommy coming out of a three year stint in prison. His sister has informed his parents that he’s been in France for that time and the comedy begins there.
There’s no UK release date as yet but it’s out early 2010 in the Us. You can view the trailer below or in HD on Yahoo.
