Kevin Costner is so heavily associated with the Western genre that he not only departed the most epic Western saga of recent years, but did so in order to make his own epic Western saga. The Dances With Wolves and Open Range legend had, in recent years, been the face of TV smash Yellowstone – the Taylor Sheridan series that became a ratings juggernaut, and spawned an entire universe of spin-off shows set in different eras of American history. But before the show's end, Costner departed the role of John Dutton III, partly in order to direct and star in his multi-part movie Western series Horizon: An American Saga. With the largely self-funded Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 hitting cinemas soon, Yellowstone fans will get their Costner Western fix – but as it stands, the star won’t appear in the upcoming final run of the TV smash.

If you saw Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s post-impeachment speech today, tonight’s Saturday Night Live cold open may seem more stenography that comedy.
“Everyone knows you cannot impeach a former president,” proclaimed Beck Bennett as the wily Kentucky Senator and former Majority Leader to Alex Moffat’s cloying Tucker Carlson of Fox News Channel fame. “That’s why we should have impeached him before, back when I said we couldn’t.”
Only slightly more blunt than the real McConnell’s too little, too late remarks in the upper chamber after the Senate failed to impeach Donald Trump for the second time today, Bennett’s version called the former Celebrity Apprentice host “guilty as Hell.” Adding that Trump was “the worst person I ever met,” this McConnell went on to to vent “and I hope every city, county and state locks his ass up. Oh god that felt good.

This historically has been a week when we’re reporting on Star Wars movies doing a daily box office average of $20M, but in this distressed Covid environment where 60% of all U.S. and Canadian theaters are closed, we have only to highlight that Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman 1984 did an estimated $22.5M in its first week. Eeesh. Now these numbers do not come from Warners — the studio isn’t reporting until Sunday — rather, from box office sources with their ears to the ground.
On New Year’s Eve, Warners trumpeted that the Patty Jenkins DC sequel had clicked past $100M worldwide. WW84 also is available on frosh streaming service HBO Max for the next 24 days before theaters get a second month’s exclusive window of the Gal Gadot film. It’s not clear yet which side of the coin for Warners is faring better here stateside in regards to...

Now that she’s been revealed as “The Masked Singer” Season 4 champion, LeAnn Rimes is hoping that people will see her in a new way.
“I’m excited to for people to continue connecting with me in this way,” said Rimes, who had been disguised as the Sun. “I think it’s giving people a new view on what they feel from the music and that’s really powerful.”
Rimes’ “The Masked Singer” unmasking coincided with the release of her new song, “Throw My Arms Around the World.” She also recently unveiled a new meditative chant album, “Chant: The Human & The Holy,” and is finishing up a new album of music with a target May release date. Additionally, she hosts the podcast “Wholly Human” for iHeart Media.

Body-swap horror comedy “Freaky” repeated as the winner of a seriously subdued U.S. box office with $1.2 million at 2,057 locations in North America during the Friday-Sunday weekend.
The Universal and Blumhouse Productions’ movie stars Vince Vaughn as a serial killer and Kathryn Newton as a low-profile high schooler who inadvertently switch bodies on Friday the 13th. “Freaky” has taken in $5.6 million in its first 10 days amid the reluctance of many moviegoers to return to multiplexes until a Covid-19 vaccine is available.
Universal noted Sunday that the theatrical box office continues to be impaired due to a notable reduction in the number of theaters in North America, as the domestic theatrical footprint has shrunk to roughly 2,800 open locations from 3,400 last weekend.
The performance of “Freaky” contrasts sharply with the same weekend a year ago when Disney launched “Frozen II” with $130 million and overall North American business totaled $206 million, according to Comscore.

With days to spare before the opening night of this year’s Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival, organizers were suddenly forced to contend with a dramatic spike in coronavirus cases in Greece’s second city, prompting them to scrap plans for a hybrid edition and move entirely online.
The sudden reversal, said festival director Orestis Andreadakis, was “really, really difficult,” but not entirely unforeseen, as the country grapples with a second wave of Covid-19 that has far outpaced the first wave in the spring. Contingency plans were already in place, as Andreadakis and his colleagues spent months preparing for a variety of scenarios. “It was extremely difficult, because it was as if [we were] preparing three festivals” at the same time, he said.
On Nov. 3, the Greek government introduced a raft of new measures determined to halt the pandemic’s spread, including a curfew in both Thessaloniki and the country’s capital, Athens,...

Mongolian filmmaker Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir’s “Ze” won the top prize at the Locarno Film Festival’s Open Doors co-production forum, which featured eight projects from Southeast Asia and Mongolia looking for international partners.
Purev-Ochir’s feature debut tells the story of the budding relationship between a teenage shaman and a young woman, set in the rough-and-tumble yurt district of the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. “Ze,” which is produced by Mongolia’s Guru Media and co-produced by France’s Aurora Films, will receive 40,000 Swiss francs in production support from the Open Doors initiative in collaboration with the City of Bellinzona and the Swiss production support fund Visions Sud Est, which is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (Sdc).
The jury praised “Ze” as “a project so well developed that it’s definitely ready for the next step. A true incoming and fresh author, presenting us a contemporary vision and not stereotypes of her country.

Nestled between the second and third tracks on Butch Walker’s new album, American Love Story, there’s a talk-radio sketch that sums up the polar-opposite stereotypes of the 2020 United States.
Female caller Annie passionately preaches her belief in “equality” and “helping out others,” while testosterone-charged Bo rattles off the minorities he hates. Both say they love freedom: For Annie, it’s represented by the sound of church bells at a gay couple’s wedding; for Bo, it’s a gun chambering a bullet. “That’s the sound of freedom,...
