Toby Keith, whose history with the CMT Music Awards goes back to having co-hosted the earliest incarnation of the show, will get his due in the wake of his recent death, as an all-star salute is planned for Keith on Sunday night’s three-hour CBS telecast.
The tribute will feature performances by one of the hottest figures in country music, Lainey Wilson, along with his fellow industry veterans Brooks & Dunn, whose Ronnie Dunn is a fellow Okie. Rocker Sammy Hagar, who featured Keith on an episode of his TV series “Rock & Roll Road Trip” in 2022, will join the lineup paying homage.
Set for what’s being billed as special appearances saluting the late singer are Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens. Nelson’s father, Willie, had a smash duet with Keith, “Beer for My Horses.” Baseball legend Roger Clemens’ friendship with Keith included the singer inducting the ballplayer into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.

Willie Nelson is one of country music’s biggest outlaws. He earned his nickname “Shotgun Willie” and often wrote about his drinking and smoking habits. Even if people started calling the songwriter an “Outlaw” in his 40s, Nelson thinks his mischief started in his childhood, as noted in Letters to America.

Nelson played guitar and joined his first band at only 10 years old. He later picked up music-related jobs as a teenager. He also earned a reputation for being an outlaw thanks to his music’s content and attitude toward hallucinogenic substances.

We know they can sing, but can they act? With Dolly Parton’s return to the big screen in “Joyful Noise,” NextMovie was inspired to take a look at some of country music’s biggest stars who’ve transferred their talents from the recording studio to the screen.
They may be the toast of the town in Nashville, but do they make the grade in Hollywood? These nine crooner-thespians have had varying degrees of success, from “um, you should probably keep your day job” to starring roles that garner great reviews.

In real life, this country queen is married to Nashville superstar Tim McGraw, and her one turn on the big screen was also as a wife -- one of the Stepford Wives -- in the 2004 film that costarred Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close and Bette Midler.

A friend who shares my passion for bad movies sent along this hysterical list from The Awl by Robert Lanham entitled "The Lowest Rated Movies in the Netflix Categories I'm Least Likely to Watch." To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how Lanham found these movies: I know how to search within different genres on Netflix, but not how to cross-search multiple genres at the same time. But I'm a bit excited by his discoveries, and I got a crack out of his list, which compares the films' official Netflix summaries with user comments from actual viewers. For instance, here's the entry for the movie "Retardead" (not a typo), low-rated in the "mad scientists" genre:
Netflix Summary: "Mad scientist Dr. Stern is turning students into super-smart cannibalistic zombies, and the local cops are too busy chasing a sex fiend to stop the flesh-eating ghouls. Fortunately, Stern's nemesis, FBI agent Susan Hannigan,...

Toby Keith, who lost almost all of his touring equipment in the recent Tennessee floods, has signed up to perform at Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's Nashville Rising concert, which will help raise funds for victims of the storm. The country couple will stage the benefit concert next week, June 22 at the Bridgestone Arena.
Keith joins a line-up that includes Billy Ray Cyrus, Zz Top, LeAnn Rimes, Amy Grant, Brooks & Dunn, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. Proceeds from the concert will benefit flood relief efforts.
Guitars and equipment belonging to Keith was left waterlogged following a flood at his storage facility in Nashville, Tennessee at the beginning of May. The "Beer For My Horses" singer was visiting U.S. troops stationed in Korea on behalf of the United Services Organization (Uso) when freak storms hit Tennessee and left much of Nashville underwater.

This is a list dedicated to entertainers who tried to give us the best of both worlds, meaning acting And singing – and failed. Sometimes, devastatingly so.
It is not meant to indicate any pessimism for Miley Cyrus or her new film The Last Song, as she is just beginning to start her venture into “real” acting (and The Hannah Montana Movie had worse acting, and not from her, anyway.)
Read Jeff Bayer’s Tsr of ‘The Last Song’
Of course, the legacy of the singer turned actor has had some great moments, like Ice Cube in Boyz N the Hood and Mandy Moore in Saved! Mariah Carey even saved herself from this list with her performance in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.
This list features moments that you may have missed from your favorite entertainers,...

Country-music legend Willie Nelson has lent his imprimatur to a film-production company called Luck Films. Based in Luck, Texas, Nelson and his partners will produce three to five projects per year -- most below the $3 million range. The 76-year-old himself will appear in the first pair of movies, including Shootout of Luck and The Dry Gulch Kid. And who can blame him? If you had Surfer, Dude, Beer For My Horses and The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning littering the most recent section of your CV, you'd probably seek some legacy redemption, too. [Variety]...

"True Blood" has filled in the last major piece of its season 3 casting puzzle, adding Brit Morgan to the ensemble.
Morgan ("The Middleman") will have a recurring part on the HBO hit as Debbie Pelt, the ex-girlfriend of Alcide (Joe Manganiello), according to The Hollywood Reporter. As is the case in the Sookie Stackhouse books on which the show is based, Debbie is -- to put it mildly -- not a fan of Sookie's (Anna Paquin).
Morgan's other credits include a guest spot on "Cold Case" and the Toby Keith movie "Beer for My Horses."
In other casting news:
- Emily Rose ("Brothers & Sisters," "John From Cincinnati") will play the lead role in Syfy's upcoming series "Haven."
Rose will play an FBI agent investigating a murder in a small town in Maine and soon discovers that the place is home to people with supernatural abilities, Variety reports. The show, set to premiere later this year,...

Toby Keith is raging about actor/writer Ethan Hawke's new Kris Kristofferson article in the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine - because it alleges the country star and the songwriter almost came to blows during a 2003 feud.
Hawke refuses to name Keith in the piece, but makes it clear he's talking about the Beer For My Horses singer - and now the hard-hitting singer is taking aim at the Before Sunset star.
Keith fumes, "I don't know Ethan Hawke. Ethan Hawke wanted to do some kind of superficial Rolling Stone article. And he did everything he could to make his story the greatest story ever in Rolling Stone. And it was a fictitious f**king lie.
"He didn't even call me by my name... He called Norah Jones, Ray Charles, everybody else by name... Why didn't he call my name? Why didn't he say Toby Keith walked through and said this?
"You know why...? He didn't want to deal with the aftermath."
In the story, Hawke claimed he witnessed the confrontation backstage at Nelson's tribute concert for his 70th birthday at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The actor refers to Keith as the singer who "had a monster hit about bombing America's enemies back into the stone age," referencing Keith's 2002 song Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American).
Hawke reports Kristofferson angrily confronted Keith after the singer poked fun at the legendary songwriter's left-wing political stance - and asked him if he'd ever killed another man in battle.
In his article, the actor recalled Kristofferson saying, "Have you ever taken another man's life and then cashed the check your country gave you for doing it? No, you have not, so shut the f**k up. You don't know what the hell you are talking about."
Rolling Stone editors are standing by the story and Hawke's reporting.
On Sunday at the Acm Awards, Keith directed his anger at The Tennessean blogger Peter Cooper, who referenced the Rolling Stone article and named Keith in a post over the weekend, when the two met backstage.
In a statement, Kristofferson insisted he could not remember the 2003 incident, adding he remains friends with Hawke, Keith and blogger Cooper.
He explains, "Although I do not remember the events at Willie's birthday party as reported in Rolling Stone, what does it matter? That was six years ago... This is the last statement I will put out about this nonsense."...

When she was widely mocked for daring to take on the iconic character of Bonnie Parker, and then feuded with original Bonnie Faye Dunaway to defend herself, Hilary Duff wasn't doing much to make herself sound like a real actress. And the next role she has coming up, other than Bonnie, will likely only make matters worse. According to this week's Production Weekly, Duff will be starring in Provinces of the Night, a movie so Southern-fried it features a banjo-playing vagrant and a wife who ran off with a peddler. While that's all well and good, it's the fact that Duff will be co-starring alongside Toby Keith that gives me pause. Sure, Keith is authentically Southern, but he's most recently starred in Beer For My Horses, and hasn't been given much credit as an actor. Not to say that everything Hilary Duff does should be to make us like her,...

Traitor
Starring Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, and Saïd Taghmaoui
Directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff
Rated R
Acting is not a straight line. Even the best thespians have their own methods of reaching their ultimate destination, of creating memorable, believable characters. Watching Traitor is like watching two actors teaching a master class, each armed with those traits that make them timeless performers. Their characters are not larger than life, which is precisely why watching what these venerable talents can do with them is so entrancing.
Don Cheadle’s genius is in finding an emotional center for each character he plays, whether it’s the gun toting Mouse Alexander in Devil in a Blue Dress or his heartbreaking Oscar-nominated turn as Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda. Though he fits many of his characters with accents and different devices to hide within them, what always comes out is their emotion.

I probably don't have to tell you that a movie based on a Toby Keith song - any Toby Keith song - is probably not going to be knocking on the door to the AFI list anytime soon. But hey, at least this isn't the movie based on the Toby Keith song where we put a boot in your ass...because that's the American way. Uh-huh. And it's worked out really well, by the way.
No, this is Beer for My Horses, and the song with that name is not the worst country tune I've ever heard, but it's far from the best. It's an Ok ditty if you're out drinking with your friends, I suppose, and that's probably both its inspiration and purpose. The song is a duet between Keith and Willie Nelson, both of whom are in the movie, although Willie has what appears to be a limited role (a shame,...

Every July 4th Eve (aka July 3rd) for as long as she can remember, young Rose has put her head down in the modest, though happy, home she shares with her poor, though happy, family and dreamt of waking up to find an extravagant Bbq with grilled hot dogs and hamburgers as far as the eye can see, and a massive fireworks display--complete with some of those fancy smiley-face fireworks--lighting up the night sky. Also, Rose dreamed that there would be a movie adaptation of the Toby Keith song, "Beer For My Horses" starring Ted Nugent, cause she thoroughly enjoyed the song when it came out in 2003, and Rose is a big fan of hunting and ridiculousness. Of course, Rose's family was far too poor (but happy!) to make the big Bbq and fancy fireworks dream come true, and Beer For My Horses: The Movie was...
