“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” the actor Ben Daniels announced on Instagram. Daniels revealed that Gelder had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer five months ago and that “neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.”

This story about Dearbhla Walsh and “Bad Sisters” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The first time director Dearbhla Walsh met Sharon Horgan, it was to discuss Walsh directing the first episode of Horgan’s horror-comedy series “Shining Vale.” But in that conversation, the comic actress and writer also mentioned a different project that really piqued Walsh’s interest.
“She said, ‘I have this other show that I think you’d love,’” Walsh said. “‘It’s about five Irish sisters who plot to murder their brother-in-law.’ And I said, ‘You had me at five Irish sisters, which means we have to shoot in Ireland. And murdering their brother-in-law — what’s not to love?’”

Andy Serkis made a surprise appearance in Disney+’s “Star Wars” show “Andor” when he showed up as Cassian Andor‘s inmate Kino Loy. But it wasn’t just a little cameo or even a one-off guest appearance. Instead, he featured significantly in the show’s best arc.
Diego Luna‘s Cassian wound up in prison on Narkina 5 while on the run from Empire officials. There, he was swiftly put to work in a nightmarish work-till-you-drop environment. Serkis’ Kino was a fellow inmate tasked with being a floor manager to keep productivity high. At first, Kino was gruff and stuck to the book but as Andor helped to reveal the corruption and unavoidable doom of the prison, Kino warmed up to Cassian and eventually created a plan to break out with him. In the end, Kino was instrumental in helping Cassian and his fellow inmates escape.

As part of its Tuesday panel at the Television Critics Association 2023 winter press tour, Masterpiece has announced two new projects including a biographical series about Noele “Nolly” Gordon starring Helena Bonham Carter and “Moonflower Murders,” the follow up project to “Magpie Murders,” are in the works for the network.
“Nolly” tells the story of the British soap opera legend whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. As one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and ’70s, Gordon is described as a woman who refused to play by the rules and ultimately transformed into a forgotten icon after the industry turned on her. Carter will star in the titular role.
“Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies penned the script. “Nolly” marks the first production from Nicola Shindler’s new production company Quay Street Productions, which is part of ITV Studios.

Emmy recognition for female directors was a long, long time coming. The playing field is a bit more level but has a long way to go. Eght of the 20 nominees for directing in the comedy series, drama series, and movie/limited series categories are women.
The first Emmy for outstanding directing was handed out in 1955 to Franklin Schaffner for the “Studio One” live drama “Twelve Angry Men” (he won an Oscar 15 years later for helming Best Picture champ “Patton”). It wasn’t until 30 years later that a woman director was even nominated in that category. Karen Arthur made history again when she won an Emmy for the “Heat” episode of CBS’ “Cagney & Lacey.” It was the only nomination and win for this prolific TV helmer.
The flood gates didn’t exactly open after Arthur’s win. More women were nominated in this category, but it took another decade for...

The Crown‘s Claire Foy and Matt Smith will reprise their acclaimed London stage roles for a New York production of director Matthew Warchus’ staging of Duncan Macmillan’s play Lungs.
Following its sold-out run at London’s Old Vic, Lungs will be presented at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater for a limited run from March 25 – April 19, 2020, producers announced.
The production marks the three Old Vic staging set for a New York run this season, following the current Broadway production of A Christmas Carol and the upcoming Girl from the North Country.
The synopsis for Lungs, about a young couple wrestling with one of life’s biggest dilemmas, is as follows: “The ice caps are melting, there’s overpopulation, political unrest; everything’s going to hell in a handbasket – why on earth would someone bring a baby into this world?”

Emmy voters need to watch, and bow, to “The Spanish Princess.” Half way through its six episode run, the Starz limited series has been ticking all the right boxes. Visually sumptuous sets and costumes? Check. Cinematography and music to die for? Check. A new take on an old classic, driven by a predominantly female team, where the often forgotten women of Henry VIII‘s Tudor court are spotlighted? Check. A confidently endearing lead performance by relative newcomer Charlotte Hope? Check.

In “The Spanish Princess,” Hope plays Catherine of Aragon, who eventually marries King Henry VIII to become the queen of England during the 16th century. Take a look at new images of actress Claire Foy ("The Crown") in the February 2019 issue of "WSJ" magazine, wearing Calvin Klein, Chanel, Celine and a whole lot more, photographed by Alasdair McLellan:

Not too long ago, Claire Foy sounded fairly appalled by the idea of becoming some "celebrity." "I don't want to get involved with that whole circuit, it's not me," the actress, then best known for starring in a BBC miniseries of Dickens' Little Dorrit, told Britain's Independent in 2011. "I've been to a couple of red-carpet events; everyone's taking your photo, and you know one person there. It feels strange, like arriving at a party with no friends in sight. Why would you do that?" Alas, then she became Queen. Photo ops and red carpets are kinda part of the gig. Fast-forward seven whirlwind years and Foy is...

Newly minted Emmy winner Claire Foy is best known for her carefully crafted performance as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, but she's about to make a major splash in Hollywood. Now that she's passed the British crown over to Olivia Colman, Foy is set to star in two major blockbusters this Fall. First up, she'll star alongside Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong's wife in the astronaut biopic First Man. Then on Nov. 9, The Girl in the Spider's Web hits theaters. Based on the fourth novel in the famed Millennium series, the actress will undergo a total transformation from the Queen of England to cyberpunk hacker Lisbeth Salander. Before you head to the theater to catch Foy's new film roles, let's take a look back at the amazing career she's had so far.

Over the last few years, television has proven time and time again that it is no longer second fiddle to film in artistic achievement; and nowhere does that fact demonstrate itself more than in the Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special. These casting directors prove that big names—Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Cuba Gooding Jr., Frances McDormand, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet—are interested in the small as well as the silver screen. The cultural importance of the high-budget limited series in legitimizing TV’s creative chops is largely because of their all-star casts, which are the result of the efforts of skillful casting directors who help create that magic for TV. The history of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special demonstrates a preference within this genre for premium channels, with FX and HBO trading off the honors for the last six years.

Expect to see the Starz program “Howards End” reap a Best Limited Series Emmy nom on July 12, along with nominations across the board for its actors and below-the-line talent. The series debuted stateside in May, 26 years after the acclaimed 1992 film adaptation that garnered nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director (James Ivory) and won three including Best Actress for Emma Thompson.
Based on the acclaimed 1910 novel by E.M. Forster, this new spin on the timeless classic was adapted by Oscar champ Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”). It stars Hayley Atwell and Philippa Coulthard as the independent and unconventional Schlegel sisters navigating their way through turn-of-the-century England, whose lives become intertwined with the wealthy Wilcox family and the working-class Bast family. The series also stars Emmy winners Julia Ormond and Tracey Ullman, alongside Matthew Macfadyen, Joseph Quinn and Alex Lawther.

One of the hottest races at the Emmy Awards last year was the limited series category: “Big Little Lies” eventually triumphed, but when your runners-up include “Fargo” and “Feud,” you know it’s a quality race. Quite a shift from the start of the decade, when only two shows, “The Pacific” and “Return to Cranford,” were nominated in 2010. The year before, only “Little Dorrit” and “Generation Kill” earned noms. Things looked so bleak, the category was combined with the TV movie category for a bit. While the two categories still share acting nominees, the limited series category has been back on its own since the 2014 awards.
In recent years, the category has been dominated by big stars who get the appeal of appearing on television without an open-ended commitment. The same applies to off-camera talent; this year alone, filmmakers like David Lynch (“Twin Peaks”), Scott Frank (“Godless”) and Steven Soderbergh (“Mosaic”) have released limited series.

E.M. Forster‘s classic 1910 novel “Howards End” was most famously adapted into a 1992 Merchant Ivory film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. It earned nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director (James Ivory), and it won three including Best Actress for Thompson. That’s a tough act to follow, but now, 26 years after that film, Forster’s novel has now been adapted into a four-part limited series on Starz that is garnering its own rave reviews. It’s rated 89% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and has scored 89 on MetaCritic, indicating near-universal acclaim. So now it has the potential to be as big a hit at the Emmys as the film was at the Oscars.
The series stars Hayley Atwell in the role that won Thompson the Oscar. She plays Margaret Schlegel, who seeks love and purpose in turn-of-the-century England. It’s directed by Hettie Macdonald, a BAFTA TV Award...

Michael Fassbender will soon star in the action adventure film “Assassin’s Creed,” based on the video game by the same name, but he’s already appeared in many films this past year, including “The Light Between the Oceans,” “X-Men: Apocalypse” and then “Trespass Against Us,” a family drama that premiered earlier this year. “Trespass Against Us” follows three generations of the Cutler family who live as outlaws in their own corner of Britain’s richest countryside. Fassbender plays Chad, an heir apparent to his father Colby (Brendan Gleeson), but soon starts looking for another life as his own son Tyson (Georgie Smith) comes of age. It co-stars Sean Harris (“Prometheus”), Lyndsey Marshal (“The Hours”), Rory Kinnear (“Quantum of Solace”) and more. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Most of us agree that "Olive Kitteridge" is out front to win Best Limited Series at the Emmys, but I think it's crazy that "Wolf Hall" currently ranks dead last in our predictions with 50/1 odds. It did well with eight nominations, including bids in key categories of acting, writing, directing, casting and editing. The only other nominee to sweep those fields: you guessed it, "Olive Kitteridge." -Break- What's more, there's lots of precedent for a "Wolf Hall" upset. The Emmys love British dramas, especially period pieces, so much so that they have upset American productions many times before. "The Lost Prince" defeated "Empire Falls" in 2005. "Little Dorrit" overtook "Generation Kill" in 2009. And though we knew voters loved "Downton Abbey" in 2011, we weren't quite expecting how thoroughly it trounced "Mildred Pierce." And let's not forget "S..."'...

In one of its most ambitious undertakings to date, the BBC is teaming with The Weinstein Company and Look Out Point to bring viewers a sprawling, six-part miniseries adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic tome War and Peace. Now, the pieces are falling into place for the series, with word that Lily James and Paul Dano are circling lead roles in the project.
Offers have been sent out to James, a rising star known best for her role as Lady Rose MacClare on the PBS period drama Downton Abbey, and Dano, who has been quietly building a reputation as a skilled character actor with parts in Little Miss Sunshine, Prisoners and 12 Years a Slave, among others. Though neither actor has been confirmed yet, James would take on the lead role of Natasha Rostova, who falls in love with Pierre Bezukhov, an awkward and illegitimate son of a wealthy Russian nobleman...

Award-winning writer Andrew Davies - whose recent credits include Mr Selfridge and Little Dorrit - is set to pen the six-episode adaptation.
Davies previously said of the project: "[It is] not just a great novel, it's a wonderful read and it'll make a wonderful serial.
