"I want my TEEVEEE!!!"
I love both stories in this episode, one quite adequately captures the existential horror one can feel when they really just can't get the hell to sleep no matter what they do, and the other is a bit of a take on drug addiction, which is something that flew right over my head as a kid! So in Insomniac Ren it just cracks me up no end when it's at the little moment where Ren's eyes are all spaced-out and wavy and weird and a heavenly choir type noise plays! I love when Ren is lying there creepily thinking his crazy thoughts as to why he can't sleep, it's kind of mesmerising and atmospheric as only this wonderful little show could be when it was at it's best! I like the ending, even though it's not as effective as everything that leads up to it. Ren does get a very brutal solution to his sleeping problem! The first segment does have it's insane moments but My Shiny Friend is a little more on the extreme side and has some imagery in it that verges on the horrifying side! I think the most entertaining and funny stuff is when Stimpy is trying out different ways to get Ren to go to sleep like one-man-band lullabies and fizzy camel spit shakes! I love the sequence where Stimpy keeps asking to go to the bathroom, I um, also failed to grasp the meaning of going number three as a kid! Stimpy's leering face as he gazes like a zombie at the tv he's been hiding in the toilet is definitely one of the scariest visuals of the series. I do not know how Billy West didn't blow out his voice box when he was making the huge sobbing cries of despair when Stimpy smashes his beloved tv and then the cat throws a tantrum and tries to put the television shards back together but just rubs them all over himself. This is a great episode and both stories in it are crazy, thoughtful and hilarious, and overall to me it's a great representation of the best that this show could do. A definite 9 going cold turkey Stimpy's out of 10! X.
