[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in 2017. It has since been updated many times.]
With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced a slew of spectacular, silly, snarky, and cynical comedies: ready to fire up whenever you need a serotonin burst or distraction thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services.
The pandemic may be in the rearview for the U.S. federal government, but the specter of war, a tortured economy, and human rights issues across the globe have occupied the minds of many instead. So, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017, yet another rethink. Since the list was originally published, we’ve expanded it to 90 entries, including titles released since then that deserved including and other titles we somehow overlooked the first time.

With his victory on Monday at the Critics’ Circle Theatre awards, Andrew Scott has made history. The Irish performer, recognized as best actor for his one-man West End show, “Vanya,” previously was named best actor at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Film Awards for his performance in “All of Us Strangers.” He’s the first person to win lead actor Critics’ Circle prizes in both film and television in the same year.
“It’s a thrilling delight,” Scott says. “I’ve been involved with both film and theater ever since I started acting when I was 17 years old. I’ve always worked between the two mediums. So to have these two projects, which were very dear to me, be recognized is more than I could have wished for.”
In the case of “Vanya,” Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” Scott played all of the show’s eight roles. That was a herculean task,...

Bella Ramsey is opening up about the struggles they faced as a child actor in Hollywood.
The Last of Us star told The Independent, in an interview shared online Saturday, that they “didn’t like the separation” they noticed between kids and adult performers.
“The thing I hated the most was being patronized,” Ramsey explained. “I didn’t like the fact that I could only be on set for a certain amount of time, and had to go and do tutoring. I get why the hours protections for child actors are phenomenally important — but I hated feeling like I was lesser or separate from the adult cast.”
Though Ramsey turned 20 years old earlier this year, they still find themselves cast as younger teens in projects, including as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, Birdy in Catherine Called Birdy and Ellie Williams in The Last of Us, opposite Pedro Pascal.

Lena Dunham’s new comedy series will be called Too Much, which is currently in production for Netflix, here are the details.
Lena Dunham made her mark as a creative powerhouse early in her career, with the gargantuan success of her comedy drama Girls, which ran for six seasons on HBO between 2012 and 2017.
She then successfully transitioned to feature films, writing and directing Tiny Furniture, Sharp Stick and, most recently, Catherine Called Birdy. She then adapted Julia Davis’ superb dark comedy Camping in America, also for HBO. It ran for a single season in 2018.
Too Much is now the second show Dunham has created, alongside her husband Luis Felber.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Too Much follows Jessica (Megan Stalter), a New York workaholic in her mid-30s who is reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every block...

While Lena Dunham seems to have found her footing again as a feature director, with 2022’s dual films “Sharp Stick” and “Catherine Called Birdy,” it seems as if the filmmaker is still not done with TV work. You see, even though she had a lengthy break from feature filmmaking, she’s never really left TV since her hit series “Girls” debuted in 2012.

Netflix’s upcoming romantic comedy from Lena Dunham, “Too Much,” has added Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe as its lead actors.
The project comes from Dunham and her husband, musician Luis Felber. Development for the series was first announced in July of this year.
The rom-com follows Jessica (Stalter) a New York-based workaholic in her mid-30s who has been slowly isolating herself from her friends and family in the wake of a failed relationship. Haunted by her own love life and past bad decisions, Jessica decides to take a job in London and vows to “live a life of solitude like a Bronte sister,” a press release for the series reads. At least that’s the case until she meets Felix (Sharpe), who is described as “less Hugh Grant in Notting Hill and more Hugh Grant’s drunken roommate.” The two find their connection impossible to ignore, even though...

Lena Dunham and her husband Luis Felber have co-created a romantic comedy series titled “Too Much” for Netflix. Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe are set to star.
“Too Much” follows Jessica (Stalter), a New York workaholic in her mid-30s who is reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every block in New York tells a story of her own bad behavior, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Brontë sister. But when she meets Felix (Sharpe) — who is less Hugh Grant in “Notting Hill” and more Hugh Grant’s drunken roommate — she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even as it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: Do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language?...

As “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” continues to dominate the box office, one three-screen arthouse movie theater in Milwaukee will also show films starring several of Taylor Swift’s past boyfriends.
Cara Ogburn, artistic director of Oriental Theater overseer Milwaukee Film, brainstormed the idea in response to the requirement that theaters can only show “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” Thursdays through Sundays.
“What if we show all Jake Gyllenhaal movies,” Ogburn, who was interviewed by The New York Times, recalled suggesting initially as a joke. “True counterprogramming.”
Thus next week, the theater will screen “Twilight” starring Taylor Lautner as werewolf Jacob Black, “Dunkirk” featuring Harry Styles formerly of the boyband “One Direction” and now doing just fine on his own as a solo musician and actor, “Crimson Peak” starring Tom Hiddleston before he took on the mantle of the MCU’s Lokie and several Jake Gyllenhaal features — “Zodiac,” “Enemy,” “Nocturnal Animals...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we debate what could possibly upset Best Drama Series frontrunner “Succession.”
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and the air quality has returned to normal so what better time than the present to talk about this year’s Emmys drama race? We’ve spent a lot of time — some might argue “too much time,” but I’d counter with “there’s never enough time” — typing and talking about “Succession” this year. With good reason: The show has become an Emmys juggernaut and its final season stuck the landing in numerous ways. It’s all but assured of winning Best Drama Series once again and could even break its record for acting nominations in a single year. Things are looking...

On April 8, Entertainment Tonight reported that Taylor Swift and her longtime boyfriend, British actor Joe Alwyn, had split up after six years of dating. People later confirmed the news, which came as a surprise to the "Lavender Haze" singer's fans.
Swift has yet to comment on her reported breakup and is currently performing in her Eras Tour. According to Et's source, the reported split was amicable, and "the relationship had just run its course."
While her past relationships were highly publicized, the singer did everything she could to keep her romance with Alwyn out of the spotlight. The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned pretty much a clean sweep: winning all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, and seven of its eight nominees winning overall — Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis were competing against each other in one category, Supporting Performance, with the former winning.

The new Alien feature from filmmaker Fede Alvarez has found its chest-bursting cast.
David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu have joined Cailee Spaeny in 20th Century Studios’ latest installment of the science-fiction horror franchise.
Alvarez, who is known for his tense and sometimes splatter-filled flicks such as Don’t Breathe and the remake of Evil Dead, is directing the project that begins production in Budapest March 9. He also wrote the script with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues.
Plot details are being kept in a cryochamber, but as opposed to the other movies which focused on adults in corporate, militaristic and scientific roles, this now-ninth installment of the franchise will focus on a group of young people. Bella Ramsay has explained why she views Lena Dunham as her role model.
The 19-year-old actor revealed that she was introduced to Dunham through Nina Gold, who was the casting director for her 2022 film Catherine Called Birdy.
In a new Rolling Stone interview, Ramsay was asked to pay tribute to the woman who inspired her.
“[Lena Dunham] encourages me a lot and advocates to take care of myself,” Ramsay said of her role model. “I think self-care is something that both Lena and I struggle with.
“She’s been a really good role model in learning how to take care of yourself, especially within a busy on-set working environment.
Speaking of Dunham’s fibromyalgia diagnosis, Ramsay said: “I know she struggles with chronic illness, so to watch her stand up and speak out for what she needs and not be ashamed, but actually to share those needs with the people around her is amazing.

Bella Ramsey has a message for homophobic viewers upset about gay storylines making their way into HBO’s blockbuster new series “The Last of Us”: “Get used to it.” Ramsey stars in the video game adaptation as Ellie. The HBO series earned critical acclaim for its third episode, which expanded on the source material to tell a gay love story between characters Bill and Frank. Toxic fans review bombed the episode on websites such as IMDb, but Bill and Frank’s romance is just the beginning of gay representation on “The Last of Us.”

HBO‘s The Last of Us is one of the first hit TV shows of 2023. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are succeeding in satisfying both long-term fans of the original video game and non-gaming viewers with their portrayal of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) Lone Wolf and Cub-inspired trek post-apocalyptic America.
It is imperative to the plot that Ellie is kept alive at all costs, a distinction that was not given to Ramsey’s character Lady Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. While learning that any resident of Westeros was fated for an early death is far from a surprise, Ramsey probably didn’t expect the news to be broken to her by her mother.

The Last of Us is the first big prestige TV show of 2023. HBO‘s adaptation of the beloved video game franchise was a highly sought-after project for many actors, especially young women hoping to take on the role of Ellie, one of the story’s two leads. Bella Ramsey of Game of Thrones fame earned the part amid plenty of competition, which included one of her former castmates on Got.
Ramsey was delighted to join the show. However, she has also had to deal with the sadly inevitable toxicity from a segment of the Last of Us fan base who have preconceived notions and an inflated sense of ownership over these characters.

The 2023 Oscar nominations went pretty much as we predicted outside of some acting categories. Our combined odds correctly predicted 88 of the nominees for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay. However, a few surprises did sneak onto the roster of contenders and a couple shocking omissions made our list of Academy Awards snubs. While nine of our Top 10 predicted films earned spots in the Best Picture lineup, “The Whale” was replaced by “Triangle of Sadness.”
The biggest jaw-dropper came from the directors branch who snubbed BAFTA nominee Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) who was sitting in fifth place in our odds as well as James Cameron (“Avatar: The Way of Water”) who was in sixth. Instead, Ruben Östlund took a slot for “Triangle of Sadness,” despite ranking 16th in our odds.
We aced the nominees for Best Original Screenplay in our predictions so there were no surprises there.
