The New Year weekend rankings give a bizarre indication of the havoc currently being wreaked on the Korean box office by the coronavirus, audience caution and stay at home orders. For a start, a Hollywood title scored a rare victory.
“Wonder Woman 1984,” the most recently released film of international significance, took the top spot for the second weekend. But it did so with a lamentable $605,000 gross, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s (Kofic’s) tracking services. It accounted for a 49% share of the Jan. 1-3 nationwide theatrical market, which shrank to just $1.2 million.
Behind it, Jackie Chan vehicle “Vanguard” managed just $97,000 from 12,000 ticket sales. That was good enough for third place by earnings, and second place by admissions.
Many of the titles that made up the remainder of the top ten were re-releases or other older titles. They included: Wong Kar-wai’s restored “In The Mood For Love...

A disaster caused by man’s negligence, personal protective gears, humans clamouring and climbing over each other for a commodity that would otherwise be taken for granted and a dangerous outdoors. Sounds familiar? Welcome to Chung Jae-hoon’s powerful “Fall Out”. With no electricity and water, the only respite is ice, which is rationed heavily and has people fighting over it to obtain. The 19th New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff) has announced the names of the recipients of its Rising Star Award and Action Cinema Award, as well as the international jury members who will select the winner of the Nyaff “Uncaged” Competition Award during the upcoming virtual edition, running from August 28-September 12 on the Smart Cinema USA app. Tickets for this year’s special virtual edition go on sale August 23.
The 2020 Screen International Rising Star Award goes to South Korean actress Lee Joo-young for Baseball Girl, making its international premiere and screening throughout the festival. The award recognizes her daring choice of roles across her already diverse body of work, as well as her fierce commitment to every performance, whether in indie cinema, where she already stands as a star, or the TV drama scene. These notable traits are exemplified by her tour-de-force turn as the eponymous underdog female athlete in Baseball Girl.

Jun is a top class South Korean secret agent working for the Nis (National Intelligence Service) which is a counter terrorism agency. However, he’s not happy with his current situation because all he wants to do is to draw comics for the web. His love of drawing is obvious as we always see him sketching away not only in the briefing room but even while he’s doing his field work.
Accordingly, in order to follow his dreams, he decides to fake his own death during a stormy night while on a mission. Making sure that his parachute will not open, he dives into the raging ocean while his colleagues watch and he never resurfaces. Needless to say, they all believe that he’s dead; even though they don’t have his body, they still hold a funeral to farewell him.
Fast forward fifteen years, we discover that Jun...

Fear of the coronavirus increased its impact on the South Korean cinema industry. Films were cancelled and box office revenues dropped for a second weekend.
Ticket sales fell by some 10%, compared to the previous weekend, which itself followed an already depressed previous session and a slow January.
That caused Megabox to delay its Jeon Do-yeon- and Jung Woo-sung-starring crime thriller “Beasts Clawing at Straws,” from Feb. 12 to Feb. 19. Ukrainian animation “The Stolen Princess,” which had been scheduled to release on Feb. 5, is indefinitely halted.
Cj Entertainment’s “Closet” managed $5.04 million from 681,000 admissions in five days to open on top. Showing on 1,192 screens nationwide, the local mystery drama accounted for 48% of the total weekend box office. Starring Ha Jung-woo (“Ashfall”) and Kim Nam-gil (“The Shameless”), “Closet” is the story of a father who engages an exorcist to help find his missing daughter.
Another Wednesday opener, “Birds of Prey” landed in second.

Fear of the spread of the coronavirus that is sweeping China has begun to contaminate the film industry in South Korea.
Box office between Friday and Sunday dropped by 70% compared to last week’s 4-day holiday weekend and by 30% compared with the weekend before that. Though the virus may only be partly responsible.
“We suppose that it is partly due to the coronavirus threat, while at this point it is more because few new films were released last week,” a Megabox spokesperson told Variety. South Korea has 15 recorded cases of coronavirus and no fatalities.
Leading exhibitor, Cgv has temporarily closed a few complexes that were visited by two people known to have been infected by the virus. CineQ has also shut down a branch.
