It’s 1856, and in the historic coal mines of Northern France, a group of miners find themselves trapped in the subterranean depths after a cave-in. But they soon realise they are not alone… Decades later, veteran miner Roland is forced by management to accompany Professor Berthier underground to take samples and measurements. A sudden landslide prevents them from surfacing, and they, too, must face the ancient mutant that constantly craves blood.
Miners in 50s France come face to face with a monstrous disciple of The Old One, which has recently been a major trope in horror cinema – it seems whilst the work of Lovecraft is unfilmable, homaging it is not. We’ve had films like The Deep Ones, The Old Ones, The Lighthouse et al and now this...

Stars: Robert Miano, Benjamin Philip, Silvia Spross, Cyril O’Reilly, Rico E. Anderson, Kurt Bonzell, Jon Budinoff, Scott Vogel, Timothy Muskatell, Roger Garcia, Elli Rahn | Written and Directed by Chad Ferrin
Chad Ferrin, director of the outrageous fun Exorcism at 60,000 Feet follows up his 2020 foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft, The Deep Ones, with The Old Ones – an even truer take on the work of Lovecraft than ever before, including the likes of Captain Marsh, Cthulhu and R’lyeh.
Speaking of Captain Marsh, The Old Ones sees two fishermen, Dan Gordon (Scott Vogel) and his son Gideon (Benjamin Philip), pull an old man out of the water. He turns out to be Marsh, who explains that he’s been kept alive for the past 93 years as a vessel of the Great Old One and then sacrificed to the same gods by the cult of worshippers – as seen in this film’s animated intro.

A Night of Horror International Film Festival, announces its first programming wave for 2024 today. Long known as Australia’s premier genre film event, the festival now takes place in the United States. This year, the festival’s 16th edition – and first in the US – screens from March 1-3, at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Says festival director Dean Bertram:
To move a fest I co-founded in Sydney, Australia, back in 2006, to America feels surreal. A Night of Horror has long taken pride in being recognized for its excellence in showcasing the best and bloodiest new horror films from around the globe. And this year’s program is already shaping up to be one of my favorite line-ups yet. In the first wave alone are some of the most original, terrifying, and at times hilarious genre offerings that you’ll see this year: A bloody buffet of zombies,...

From 1984 to 1993, Coster starred on NBC’s soap opera “Santa Barbara” as Lionel Lockridge. He appeared in just under 600 episodes of the series before it ended. Tom and his cameraman Mike are The Ghost Crew, a paranormal investigation team try, without much success, to get some footage for their next show. In the middle of this, they encounter Sandy wandering around in a daze. She can remember being at a hospital in the woods and walking until she encountered Tom and Mike but not why she was there or how she got there.
Like most ghost hunters in films like this, they’re one step away from being cancelled and Arnold, their producer, is demanding better footage or else. Desperate to save their show they latch on to Sandy’s case.
Staunton and director Lawrie Brewster get Ghost Crew off to a somewhat shaky start due to just how awkward and out-of-touch Tom seems to be. The...

Night Caller opens with visions of a murder underneath the main credits before Clementine an operator for Jade Mei’s gets a call from the man she saw in the visions before he commits the crime for real.
And that murder serves notice to viewers that this isn’t going to be a Scream or Blumhouse style mainstream horror film. There are repeated gory closeups of a large knife entering the victim’s body. A shift of camera angle to some not so explicit shots that suggest the knife is getting shoved somewhere else. And the ranting killer taking the somehow still living woman’s scalp as a souvenir.
Less than ten minutes in and writer/director...

MidWest WeirdFest announces its first programming wave for 2021. The cinematic celebration of all things fantastic, frightening, paranormal, and just plain weird – now in its 5th year – takes place March 5th-7th 2021 at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Says festival founder and director Dean Bertram:
The world has never seemed so weird. Neither has MidWest WeirdFest’s program of cutting-edge cinema. It’s filled with alien abductees, serial killer victims who can’t die, real-life dinosaurs that still live in the Congo, Lovecraftian fish people, mystically empowered but inept ninjas, an erotically twisted re-imagining of Edgar Allen Poe, and a dystopian fungal pandemic that makes Covid-19 look like a cake-walk… and that’s just from our first wave of feature film programming.
Discounted festival passes are now on sale here: https://filmfreeway.com/MidWestWeirdFest/tickets
