Exclusive: HBO Max has opted not to renew 1980s coming-of-age comedy series Gordita Chronicles for a second season. The decision comes a little over a month after the show launched on the platform to strong reviews amid a programming shift at the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer.

“Live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future, and as a result, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to end Gordita Chronicles at HBO Max,” a spokesperson for the streamer said in a statement to Deadline. “The series earned critical acclaim and a loyal following, and we are proud to have worked with creator Claudia Forestieri and our two powerhouse executive producers, Eva Longoria — who also masterfully directed the pilot — and Zoe Saldaña, to bring Cucu’s journey to the screen. It took an extra day but True Lies, which had been expected to get a nod yesterday, along with CBS’ other new series orders, is officially picked up to series. As Deadline reported yesterday, the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie, from Matt Nix, McG, Cameron and 20th Television, is targeted for midseason. It joins CBS’ other newly picked up hourlong series, Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd, which are expected to be on the fall schedule.
It is no surprise that CBS and True Lies studio 20th Television needed an extra day to hammer out a deal given the companies’ complicated history over the last decade. This is 20th TV’s first hourlong series order at CBS in 12 years, since dramedy Chaos, whose initial series pickup dramatically fell through after the two sides could not agree on a deal. In a welcome casting decision that I doubt anyone could have anticipated, Christopher Nolan's World War II drama "Oppenheimer" has added former child star and star of the short-lived "Turner and Hooch" reboot series, Josh Peck to the film. Peck has been brought on to play Kenneth Bainbridge, a scientist who historically worked on the Manhattan Project, the code name used for America, the United Kingdom, and Canada's research and development undertaking during the second world war to produce the first nuclear weapons. Peck is joining the already ridiculously stacked cast featuring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist whose research led to...

“Drake and Josh” star Josh Peck has joined the sprawling cast of Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic “Oppenheimer.”
He will play Kenneth Bainbridge, a real scientist who was involved in the Manhattan Project, the code name for America’s effort to develop nuclear weapons during the second world war.
Cillian Murphy is starring as J. Robert Oppenheimer in the movie, which examines the physicist whose contribution led to the creation of the atomic bomb. Murphy will be surrounded by an A-list ensemble, including Emily Blunt as biologist and botanist Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves Jr. and Robert Downey, Jr. as founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Lewis Strauss.
There are at least a dozen other recognizable actors already on board. Florence Pugh will play psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie will portray theoretical physicist Edward Teller and Josh Hartnett will embody pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.

"Dog," the directorial debut of Channing Tatum and "Magic Mike" franchise screenwriter Reid Carolin, is exactly what you'd expect from a feel-good road trip buddy comedy about a man trying to befriend a very difficult dog. There's something to admire in the film's beautifully crafted simplicity; it's as if the film is nostalgic for the family-friendly dog flicks of the 1980s and '90s — "Beethoven," "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey," "Turner & Hooch," and so on. It's occasionally predictable, but that predictability is often easy to forgive because it's all handled with such a steady hand, both narratively and visually. "Dog" is funny, heartfelt, and absolutely...

“Animals are people too!” a liberal yahoo in Portland yells before nearly getting his face eaten off by a Belgian Malinois named Lulu in “Dog,” a movie that not-so-secretly agrees with that sentiment, even as it has a laugh at the clueless animal lover’s expense.
Lulu, it turns out, is a more complicated character than the one her human co-star, Channing Tatum, gets to play — which explains why it took three Malinoises to embody her on screen: one to do most of the “acting” (Britta), one to lie down (Lana) and one to look as incorrigibly homicidal as possible, like she could rip out your throat or murder Al-Qaida, if necessary (that would be Zuza). But Tatum had the much tougher job, trying to disappear into the skin of a battle-scarred ex-U.S. Army Ranger tasked with transporting Lulu across the Western United States while co-directing the project (with...

"Magic is all around us," says John Cleese in voiceover. We will later discover that he, and, one suspects a number of stand-ins, are playing a Mr Bridwell. Named for the eponymous animal's creator, Norman Bridwell created Emily Elizabeth and Clifford The Big Red Dog back in 1963. The book where he goes to Hollywood was 1980, but it took a few more years for screen adaptations. Variously released already, in some cinemas at some points, this is a family animal picture in a traditional fashion. While it's got some quirks it's relatively inoffensive, and if it feels like damning it with faint praise to say it's got nothing drastically wrong with it then fair enough.

Exclusive: Brandon Jay McLaren (Turner & Hooch) DeVaughn Nixon (Prom) and Tiffany Lonsdale (Siren) are set for heavily recurring roles opposite Damson Idris in the upcoming fifth season of FX drama Snowfall. The series hails from the late Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director John Singleton & Eric Amadio and Dave Andron.
In the most recent fourth season, business is booming. It’s January 1, 1985. Ronald Reagan has won his re-election campaign, proclaiming it is “morning again in America,” but in South Central, Los Angeles, it feels more like the sun is getting low. The demand for crack cocaine is high, and while our crew of dealers led by Franklin Saint (Idris) are benefitting greatly from the rising tide of addiction, they are also starting to become aware of the damage the drug is doing to the people and to the place they love.

Cristina Rosato is the latest addition to the cast of Turner & Hooch, but she's had an exciting career in the entertainment industry.
Her character has emerged as a firm favorite on the Disney+ series.
We got to chat with Cristina about what's ahead on Turner & Hooch Season 1, upcoming projects, and so much more.
What attracted you to Turner & Hooch?
Cristina: I was a fan of the original movie when I was a little girl. When I read the script, this character was just so fun and so different from anything I'd really ever done before in my career.
I was really excited to be challenged in this way.
The series has animals on the set. What's that like?
They're amazing. It kind of reminds me more of like, I guess, live theater because there's always just elements that are on the fly and a little bit spontaneous...

As Disney Plus continues down the road of rebooting and reviving as many nostalgic properties as possible — a road well-traveled and highly polished thanks to savvy spins like “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” — it’s hard to begrudge the strategy when it produces something as sweet as “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” More than 30 years after “Doogie Howser, M.D.” first premiered on ABC, starring a teenaged Neil Patrick Harris as the iconic child doctor, Disney Plus has debuted its own thoroughly wholesome version with a Doogie as sunny as Harris’ was self-serious.
In Kourtney Kang’s update, Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha (the very charming Peyton Elizabeth Lee) is a 16 year-old Hawaiian girl who loves the beach, her family, and a cute surfer (Alex Aiono) who doesn’t make her feel too weird about being a doctor prodigy. Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, August 31.
Hulu's Olga Dies Dreaming, the Hulu pilot based on Xóchitl Gonzalez’s forthcoming novel, has added another cast member.
Williams is set to play Matteo Jones, who’s described "as a collector of music, objects, trivia and, mainly, opinions," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"A passionate Brooklynite, he would come across as a know it all if, in fact, he wasn’t so genuinely curious about everything."
"Matteo is keenly aware of people’s inclination to put everyone and everything into neat little boxes and he firmly refuses to conform."
Williams will star opposite Aubrey Plaza and Ramón Rodriguez on the series, which has landed a pilot order.
Williams exited Grey's Anatomy after a decade in the role of Jackson Avery earlier this year.

Through much of 2021, streaming service Disney+ has been Marvel’s domain. That’ll happen when you premiere WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If…? within eight months of one another. With the Disney+ list of new releases for September 2021, however, Disney’s other big franchise is striking back.
Star Wars: Visions is set to premiere all seven installments on Wednesday, September 22. This project is a collection of 7 animated short films all from renowned Japanese studios. As you can see by this first teaser, it could be rad. These seven shorts should also make the wait for The Mandalorian season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett even easier.
While Marvel’s What If…? continues on this month, the only other major Disney+ original to premiere in September is Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. As you might be able to guess from the name, this is a reboot of the sitcom Doogie Howser,...

Sometimes disaster strikes.
Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 5 finds Scott, Hooch and Xavier stuck searching for a fugitive in the quirky small town of El Dorado.
The mission may sound boring on the surface, but there's plenty of drama on the horizon for the characters.
Disney+ shared an exclusive look at the installment with TV Fanatic, and it shows Hooch acting out of character.
Through the first four episodes, Scott and Hooch have gradually built a relationship, helping each other out when they need it the most.
Unfortunately, Hooch gets stung by a skunk while out of town, and Scott struggles because his loveable pooch is acting out.
Scott calls Erica for assistance, but it's obvious there is still some tension between them after recent events, and she tells Scott the best way to deal with the skunk issue is by bathing Hooch.

As far as iconic reboots go, we have no bones to pick with the latest reboot of the classic 1989 comedy Turner & Hooch. The film was adapted into a Disney+ series that premiered earlier this year and it's just as lovable and action-packed as the original, with Drake & Josh star Josh Peck reprising Tom Hanks' Det. Scott Turner role. But it was actor Matt Hamilton, who plays Peck's sidekick, US Marshal Trent Havelock, that caught our eye. Hamilton, an actor and screenwriter, has appeared in many TV series including Supernatural and Marvel's Legions before landing the coveted Havelock role in Hooch. In fact, this is somewhat of a dream role according to Hamilton, who spoke to exclusively E! News...

Disney Plus rebounded in the second calendar quarter of the year, reeling in 12.4 million net new subscribers to stand at 116 million worldwide as of July 3 — beating analyst targets.
Wall Street analysts on average had forecast Disney Plus subscribers coming in at 112.8 million for the period.

The results come after Disney missed expectations for Disney Plus net adds for the first three months of the year, after it boomed in 2020 amid pandemic lockdowns.
The July 3 quarter, Disney’s fiscal Q3 2021, was the first period to fully reflect Disney Plus’ price hikes earlier this spring. In the U.S., the streaming package went up one dollar, to $7.99/month, as of March 26.

As if having a new canine partner to train and work with wasn’t enough, Scott Turner’s ex has arrived on the scene in “Turner & Hooch,” and she’s clearly going to shake things up. But according to Becca Tobin, who plays said ex, it’s going to be a whole lot of fun to watch the two of them together — mostly because she’s never had more fun acting opposite someone.
That said, there is definitely a kind of pressure when signing onto a project with the legacy of “Turner & Hooch.” Especially because the Disney+ series isn’t a reboot, it’s a continuation. Tom Hanks’s original character and storyline is very much canon, and referenced with fervor.

Photo: 'Turner and Hooch’/Disney+ A New Legacy Series Stemming from the 1989 Classic I’ve been excited for the release of Disney+’s ‘Turner and Hooch’ ever since it was announced in 2020 for multiple reasons. First, I am a huge Josh Peck (‘Grandfathered’) fan, considering I spent my afternoons growing up watching him on ‘Drake & Josh’. Secondly, I am a major dog lover and especially have a special place in my heart for Mastiffs, my father’s favorite dog breed, so I knew I was instantly going to fall in love with this show. ‘Turner and Hooch’ recently premiered on Disney+ and is a continuation of the 1989 comedy of the same name which starred Oscar-winning actor, Tom Hanks. It’s a bold, new post-Loki world for Disney+. To deal with it, Disney+ is going right back to the Marvel well for its list of August 2021 new releases.
Marvel’s What If…? premieres August 11 on Disney+. This is an animated series that will feature speculative stories within the MCU like “What if Peggy Carter became Captain America?”, “What if the Ravagers took T’Challa to space?”, and “What if…zombies?!?!?!” While What…If? always seemed like a fun thought exercise, the series has really taken on a vital multiversal context in light of Loki‘s conclusion.
In non-Marvel news, Disney+ will be filling out its library offerings this month. Mrs. Doubtfire arrives on August 6 and will be followed by Eragon on August 20. After its brief premier access release, Cruella will make itself a permanent, free home on Disney on August 27.
There aren’t many other original Disney+ series to speak of in August.

The mystery surrounding what happened to Scott Sr. is intensifying.
Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 2 was another fun outing for all the family, and while the case was, once again, lacking, the overarching mystery continues to be the allure of the series.
Scott has been so desperate to believe there was no suspicious activity surrounding his father's death that he's been dismissive of Laura's quest for answers.
You'd like to think your loved ones died of natural causes, so it's easy to understand why Scott has been paying more attention to his career, but curiosity has been taking over Laura's life since she first found the case files.
The "look-see" to the scene of the death provided more questions than answers, but at least it confirmed what Laura suspected all along.
It's poignant that Hooch was the one to find the watch, and it's very likely he'll be able to...

HBO’s documentary Woodstock 99: Peace, Love and Rage has a lot on its mind when it comes to the debacle of the 1999 music festival, with one of its most provocative ideas tied to the dangers not of forgetting history, but of viewing history through a nostalgia-skewed lens (something that can create worse messes than just a Turner & Hooch TV show).
This alone would make the doc plenty timely and perceptive, even if Garret Price’s film wasn’t also about the dangers of pandering to angry young white men without considering consequences. I have problems with some of the ...

Josh Peck returns to TV on July 21 with Disney Plus’ “Turner & Hooch,” a continuation of the 1989 Tom Hanks film of the same name. Here, Peck plays the son of the character portrayed by Hanks in the original, also named Scott Turner. The younger Turner is a U.S. Marshal who similarly finds his life turned upside down by an ultra-slobbery, lovable canine named Hooch. As he navigates his job, he comes to learn the dog he didn’t want may be the very partner he needs.
Your character is the son of the late Scott Turner, previously played by Tom Hanks. Did you feel pressure stepping into his shoes?
He’s such a legend. I think I was aided by the fact that he’s in such rarefied air, I’ve looked up to him for so long that I never had any delusions that I’d get anywhere close.

With reboots and revivals ruling the TV development slate over the last few years, I had reservations about a TV show sequel to Turner & Hooch.
For the most part, expanding franchises usually results in people wanting the project to disappear from existence because of how detrimental they are to the memory of the original.
Thankfully, Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 1 manages to forge a path that makes it a worthy follow-up to the Tom Hanks movie, while introducing fresh and exciting concepts, and of course, a lovable dog in Hooch.
The series sets the tone off the bat and doesn't deviate from it, which helps to keep the show fun for all the family.
Shows from Matt Nix typically have a distinct feel, and it's hard not to compare the tone Burn Notice. It's light, filled with comedy and high-octane action sequences.

When pandering to nostalgia, it’s probably important to be aware of what your intended audience is actually nostalgic for.
As best I can figure it, when it comes to 1989’s Turner & Hooch, geriatric millennials and juvenile Gen Xers are mostly nostalgic for a poster, that image of a blank-eyed Tom Hanks staring into the middle distance as a slobbering mastiff looks lovingly at the dab of peanut butter I’m assuming somebody placed behind Tom Hanks’ left ear.

In 1989, just months after he earned his first Oscar nomination for Big, and a few years before he went on a run of critical and commercial success that’s nearly unrivaled in the history of cinema, Tom Hanks starred in a series of middling movies that never would’ve suggested the megastar he’d become. One of these was Turner & Hooch, which starred Hanks as fastidious small-town cop Scott Turner, whose life is upended when he takes in a big, messy French mastiff named Hooch.
