Filmmaker Zach Cregger’s next film, the thriller “Weapons,” looks like it’s armed and ready to do fire. Yesterday, Alden Ehrenreich joined the cast, which already includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, indicating how fast Cregger shot to the A-list of directors. Previously, Cregger had been a member of the comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’ Know,” an actor in sitcoms, and had directed one feature, 2009’s comedy, “Miss March,” not exactly known as an auteur-like filmmaker.

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.

Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger’s winning streak continues. Made on a budget of 4.5 million, Barbarian earned more than 40 million at the domestic box office when it was released by 20th Century Studios last year – a big enough success story that New Line Cinema forked over 38 million to pick up Cregger’s mysterious new horror project, Weapons. (Beating out Jordan Peele and Universal in the bidding war.) New Line then signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, the production company behind Barbarian. And as part of this deal, they put a sci-fi thriller called Companion on the fast track to production, with Cregger producing alongside BoulderLight and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. Now The Hollywood Reporter has learned that New Line Cinema has won another bidding war, this time picking up the haunted house project Occupant from new writer Victor Sweetser… and Cregger is going to be...

It was a flash bomb of an auction. Within 36 hours of first hitting the town, a package featuring a 39-page short story titled “Occupant” and written by newbie Victor Sweetser saw offers zoom from a 25,000 option to a final purchase price of high mid-six figures. There were numerous studios and filmmakers fighting in the trenches for the project — Paramount, Lionsgate, Amazon — but in the end it was New Line that won it.
The early February brouhaha illustrates the hot streak of Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian, which cost 4.5 million to make and then grossed more than 40 million domestically for 20th Century Studios. Cregger is attached to produce Occupant along with frequent partner Roy Lee and Scott Glassgold, who originated and developed the project. Occupant is described as a reverse haunted house story. Instead of a family moving into an abode, here a historical house...

The buzz had been building for more than two weeks. A new project from Zach Cregger, the out-of-nowhere filmmaker behind the cult horror hit Barbarian, was coming.
There were offers sight unseen, some even hitting eight figures, before the project was taken to market. Producers were calling Cregger’s representatives, begging to be involved. No dice. Nobody was getting a peek until it was to hit the market the morning of Jan. 22.
In the 24 hours after Cregger’s new horror project, Weapons, was sent to Hollywood studios, a brief but intense bidding war exploded. And just as quickly, a whopper of a deal was made.
Closing whirlwind negotiations Tuesday, New Line has won the rights to Weapons, signing a deal that seems unprecedented in modern times, especially for a filmmaker with essentially just one movie under his belt.
Yes, there is the money — eight figures to write and direct — according to sources.

September 2022 was a downright abysmal month at the box office, for the most part, but if there was perhaps one bright spot, it was "Barbarian." The brilliantly marketed horror flick from director Zach Cregger, a founding member of "The Whitest Kids U'Know," managed to top the charts in its opening weekend and has since become a word-of-mouth success story that just keeps on rolling. But it wasn't an easy road that led to this movie's success, as just about every studio that makes horror movies passed on it before things finally came together.
In a recent feature from Vulture about the success of "Barbarian," Cregger explained that the movie's unconventional structure was a deterrent for many who read the script and could have financed the production. Not to get into spoilers here, but it is a pretty unconventional, absolutely wild ride. Cregger, despite the rejections, was determined to get the film made.

Photo: 'Barbarian' The Director’s Switch from Comedy to Horror Director Zach Cregger is well-recognized for doing his lowbrow comedy skits in the show ‘Whitest Kids U Know.’ Since his show had gotten so popular, he and his pals even participated in his comedic debut ‘Miss March.’ Just like the actor and director Jordan Peele, he is one of those comedic talents that has surprised his fans by experimenting with the horror genre. The movie ‘Barbarian’ will impress his fans and will make them wonder how a comedically talented individual can also make a horror film. If Jordan Peele can find success in making the terrifying ‘Get Out,’ then Zach Cregger can also make a name for himself by creating a frightening story for our modern times. We've barely entered the spooky movie season and Zach Cregger's "Barbarian" has already blown the doors off in a big way. It's rare that you come across a movie that keeps its deepest secrets close to its chest in the way that this unpredictable nightmare does. It comes as such a surprise given how Cregger, one of the founding members of "The Whitest Kids U' Know," has only directed one other theatrical feature with "Miss March," which was savagely panned by critics at the time of its release.
"Barbarian" already feels like a formidable addition to the roster of modern horror greats. Those of you who are already privy to this movie's dark secrets know how imperative it is that others walk into it as cold as possible. While Cregger was interviewed by Bloody Disgusting, he stressed how important it was to...

When you rent an Airbnb, the most important step of booking the place is making sure everything is on the up and up. You never really know what's lurking in the corners of someone else's abode, after all. Once you take the gleefully twisted roller coaster ride that is "Barbarian," however, you're going to thoroughly inspect every crevice of the place, if not outright cancel any standing reservations.
It's become partly cliche to say that a movie like "Barbarian" will have a cultural effect in the same way "Jaws" did with water, but I challenge anyone currently staying in an Airbnb property to witness this movie and not think about packing your bags immediately after you get home from the theater.
Director Zach Cregger ("Miss March") is a certified madman. This is one of those rare cases where minimalist marketing was a smart...

Not much is known about Barbarian beyond the fact that it stars exciting up-and-comers Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård and that it’s set, largely, in an Airbnb, that’s (maybe) been double-booked. The trailers have been minimalist, the posters even more so. Even the title seems somewhat vague (who – or what – is the ‘barbarian’ exactly?). You won’t be surprised to hear that it’s all very much on purpose; the mystery is the selling point here, and while there’s certainly a lot to be said, and a lot that this writer wants to say, let’s keep this brief since going in as cold as possible is strongly recommended – Barbarian is the best horror film of 2022. If you’re a genre fan, you should definitely see this movie.

Chicago – When a 13 year old African American teenager is suddenly put into the atmosphere of Germany – specifically Old Heidelberg – then a whole new adventure awaits for “Morris from America.” Craig Robinson (“The Office”) portrays the title character’s father, and the film is directed by Chad Hartigan.
Hartigan is doing his third feature film, after the recent “This is Martin Bonner” (2013). “Morris from America” is slightly autobiographical, as his Irish father and American mother were missionaries, and he had problems fitting in wherever they moved (see story below). The film was shot on location in Old Heidelberg, and was financed in part through Germany.

Director Lucky McKee’s harrowing but darkly comic study of the darkness of human nature, The Woman, has polarized opinions since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film’s journey to the UK has taken in a premiere at FrightFest, where it was one of the most talked about and enthusiastically received films, a UK-wide cinema release and from 17th October 2011, The Woman will be available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray.

The British DJ joins a handful of celebrity guests for a fantastic afternoon meal — this is the place to be in NYC!
DJ Paul Oakenfold stopped by the Italian nightclub and lounge Lavo in NYC on June 5, to spend an afternoon decorated with champagne and implausible Italian cuisine! DJ Oakenfold, the British sensation whose third studio album Pop Killer is set to be released later this year and includes multi-talented artists Cee-Lo Green, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Matt Goss, entertained celebrity guests James Woods and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Ashley Madison.
Woods and his blonde-bombshell counterpart Ashley, best known for her work in the film Miss March, were spotted dancing across the club’s tables as DJ Oakenfold ‘spun’ them into the late afternoon. The 64-year-old actor had much to celebrate as post-production for his upcoming film, the re-make of 1971′s Straw Dogs, is near completion.

Photo: Warner Bros. I was completely out of the loop when it came to Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a film predominantly known at this point as the worst reviewed movie of the last decade by RottenTomatoes standards. So, when I decided I would follow in the footsteps of my previous look at Skyline and regularly take a look back at movies considered to be among the worst ever that I had not yet seen, there was no better place to start.
In short, yes, this is a bad film. Terrible in fact. Is it the worst? That's all relative to the discussion. Worst in what way? Plot? Characters? Execution? Entertainment? In all honesty, this is a film I would consider a perfect entry in a new age of grindhouse. All I could think of while watching the inexplicable amount of explosions, lack of story and silly predicaments was of Robert Rodriguez...

When one thinks of the office-comedy series, a picture of people joking at cubicles or pulling pranks on co-workers may come to mind. Well the new series Breaking In is looking to change the way an office-comedy works. The show centers around workers at Contra Security and the jobs they handle. But hold on folks, this isn’t a normal security company. Their practices in the field of security are somewhat questionable both in a public sense and a legal sense. Tomorrow night, Breaking In premieres and we here at TVOvermind would like to give you the readers a quick guide to the characters you will be seeing during the series.

We open on Fashion week in New York, a celebration Peter hates but leaves Neal smiling. They finally get a cab but Neal gives it to models. Second cab same as the first. Neal tells Peter to embrace the week, but Peter's late to interview a witness. Neal shows some money, which Peter says won't work, and a cab stops right away. The perp of the week is an Israeli counterfeiter, Ghovat, whom Neal knows as the Ghost. He's big-league in the counterfeiting world, the first one to forge the micro printing on the euro. They interview Tara, a model who inadvertently witnessed the Ghost murder someone. She can identify the Ghost's voice and is willing to help.
In the office, Peter and Neal go over the case. The dead guy was Ghovat's associate and they theorize a business deal went wrong. Fashion Week gives him cover to meet his buyer.

We begin today's roundup with a massive update on Fox's proposed Fantastic Four reboot, which as of now will not be called Fantastic Four Reborn as previously thought. As for the casting rumors, ScreenRant reports Adrien Brody and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are currently in the running for the role of Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic. The casting of an Oscar winner like Brody would seem to stick with the theme of casting credible actors in such movies, but it bears noting that his name has already been discussed in connection to Edgar Wright's Ant-Man movie for Marvel Studios.
Amber Heard (Zombieland) is reportedly being pursued to play the Susan Storm/Invisible Woman character in the reboot, adding her to a shortlist that already includes recent X-Men: First Class dropout Alice Eve. Jessica Alba previously portrayed the character, so it looks like Fox is sticking with the curious strategy of casting...

If Inception remaining on top proves audiences like demanding, well-executed films, how come Hollywood keeps churning out dumb comedies like the box office runner-up?
Inception's impressive run – it just scored a $27.5m number one hold in its third weekend – is taxing the powers of headline writers who have already exhausted their supply of dream references. The film's rip-roaring start is the stuff of fantasy, however: the $193.3m running total for a challenging, original story deserves accolades and provides a heartening reminder that audiences will reward demanding, well-executed films.
Dinner for Schmucks is neither of these. Comedies don't necessarily need to be demanding, but they should be well executed and, correct me if I'm wrong, but funny also counts for something. However this sorry DreamWorks production, which opened in second place through Paramount on $23.3m and is inspired by Francis Veber's 1998 French comedy Le Diner de Cons, begs the question...

There are so many raunchy, sex-driven teen comedies out there, most of which are pure garbage. Miss March? Ridiculous. The whole straight-to-dvd American Pie series? Junk. I Love You Beth Cooper? I shudder at the title alone. But Fired Up? What was so terrible about that one? In fact, I think it's quite good. The film is downright hilarious, it has some heart and is entertaining through and through.
It stars Nicholas D'Agosto and Eric Christian Olsen as Shawn and Nick, two jocks so obsessed with the ladies, they opt to ditch football camp for cheerleading camp. They convince their high school squad, The Tigers, they're committed solely for athletic purposes, but they've got another plan in mind; hook up with as many ladies as possible before ditching and attending an epic football party. I just finished watching this horrendous, bottom-feeder of a movie called The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It. The obvious title indicates that it's a Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer-type spoof of Judd Apatow movies, plus "knocks" at several other popular movies. I suppose it goes without saying that spoofing a bunch of comedies is a troublesome idea, unless you really have something to say about them, rather than simply offering pale copies of their most famous scenes. But this movie goes below that; it's aggressively bad, stupid and vile and insulting and inept all at once. It might be the worst movie I've ever seen, except that it reminded me of two movies I saw just last year, Miss March and Transylmania, which were just as bad.
Anyway, this got me thinking about comedies. What makes a great one and what makes a bad one,...

The aliens from Sony's "District 9" scored big during The Hollywood Reporter's 39th annual Key Art Awards.
Honoring the best in movie marketing, Friday's event at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles saw "District 9" take home 11 awards, including the best-in-show prize for its integrating marketing campaigning as well as three other best-in-show laurels for its outdoor advertising (built around its "Bus Stop for Humans Bus Shelter"), TV spots and digital campaign.
The awards ceremony culminated with Sylvester Stallone receiving the Visionary Award, given annually to a filmmaker who inspires movie marketers.
"At the end of the day, there is no question that Sylvester Stallone delivers great product," THR publisher Lori Burgess said before calling Stallone to the candlelit stage at what once was the altar of the former St. Vibiana Roman Catholic cathedral, which has been converted to a party space. "He's put his stamp on film like very few people of his generation.

There are extremely few motion pictures produced by sketch comedy troupes that are actually worth the time and effort it takes to track them down. “Run Ronnie Run”, for example, was completely disowned by “Mr. Show” masterminds David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, guys I consider to be comedic geniuses. “Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy” may not be completely unbearable, but it never rises to the level of brilliance found in the first few seasons of their wildly hilarious television series. The Whitest Kids U Know, meanwhile, might be funny in bite-sized pieces, but endearing these goofballs in a feature-length movie is akin to snorting baking soda off the decaying backside of a dead squirrel. The less said about the unwatchable abomination known as “Miss March”, the better. Derrick Comedy’s surprisingly solid 2009 endeavor “Mystery Team” is the sort of film that reminds me why, precisely, I waste so much...

Movies from sketch comedy groups can be dicey propositions. The formats aren't really conducive to each other. Sketch comedy can be hilarious one moment, then the next moment it's crickets chirping. If the group is good, they can move on quickly and forget about things. But movies are a whole other monster to tame. what could sustain three to five minutes can be awkward in this new format. Some groups can pull it off, and you get great films like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Brain Candy, or at least Super Troopers. Mess it up, and you're stuck with Miss March.
And there's not a lot on this earth that's worse, cinematically speaking, than Miss March.
Now we have Derrick Comedy, an internet sensation full of gentlemen whose names all begin with a "D". Though curiously, none named Derrick. Whether you find this clever or stupid will help determine...

Disney/PIxar's "Up" has earned 19 nominations, the most of any film, for The Hollywood Reporter's 39th annual Key Art Awards. Winners will be announced during an awards show set for June 11 at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles.
Sony's "District 9" was next with 14 noms, followed by Warner Bros.' "The Hangover" with 12.
Ignition leads all agencies with 59 nominations, and Lionsgate collected the most studio noms, followed closely by Paramount and Warners.
Sylvester Stallone will receive the Visionary Award. An actor, writer and director, Stallone has branded his movies with vitality and a belief that a man can succeed against all odds. Former Visionary Award recipients include Sam Raimi and Judd Apatow.

Thank goodness Hugh Hefner came in at the last minute to save the Hollywood Sign. At least for the sake of the tourism industry, which would have been left with an enormous supply of worthless redundantly captioned postcards and snow globes. I'm reminded of the poor stereotypical Italian guy in Superman III who has to make new models of the Tower of Pisa after Evil Superman straightens it.
But seriously, the Sign is little more than a relic of some ancient real estate scheme, so it would have been fitting for a modern real estate venture to do away with it. Just as it would be appropriate for the Chinese to demolish parts of the Great Wall as a sign of its willingness to let in certain foreign invaders influences so long as they contribute to the nation's rise as a global economic superpower.
No, but seriously, the Hollywood Sign is a necessary landmark,...

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen has been named the Worst Picture of 2009 in this year's Razzies - the 30th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards - held last night in Hollywood in its traditional spot just before the Oscars.
The much-derided robot action adventure was up against G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Land of the Lost, Old Dogs and All About Steve, and took a total of three awards in the night of shame.
Sandra Bullock is pictured above at the ceremony after turning up to receive the Worst Actress gong for her role in All About Steve, which also earned her Worst Screen Couple along with the film's co-star Bradley Cooper.
Bullock vied for her dishonourable win with Beyonce (Obsessed), Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie), Megan Fox (Jennifer's Body and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Did You Hear About the Morgans?).

Razzie Awards 2010 winners have been announced.
The big “winner” was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, taking home three awards: Worst Screenplay, Worst Director and Worst Picture of 2009. Nominated twice in the past for worst director (Armageddon, Pearl Harbor), Michael Bay finally won the prize.
Sandra Bullock, nominated for a Best Actress Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards for The Blind Side, won two – Worst Actress in All About Steve and Worst Screen Couple shared with Bradley Cooper.
Since this is the Razzies’ 30th anniversary year, special awards were given for worst picture of the decade Battlefield Earth, based on the writings of Scientology creator L. Ron Hubbard.
Comedian Eddie Murphy and Paris Hilton were named the worst actor and actress of the 2000s, respectively.

On the eve of her expected Academy Awards triumph, Sandra Bullock won the 2009 Worst Actress Razzie for "All About Steve," while "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" received the Worst Picture award. If Bullock takes Best Actress for "The Blind Side," she will be the first person ever to win an Oscar and a Razzie over the same weekend. "She's in the unprecedented position, Saturday she's the worst, and the very next night, she's back on her feet, and she's the best," said Razzies founder John Wilson. "We certainly don't wish her ill at that other awards show." The "Transformers" sequel won two other Razzies, Worst Director for Michael Bay and Worst Screenplay for Ehren Kruger, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Bay and his team probably will not lose any asleep over it since "Transformers 2" took in $402.1 million domestically to become the second higest grossing film of 2009, coming in only behind "Avatar.

As Oscar ballots arrive to decide Hollywood’s best and brightest, some within 20th Century Fox are furious over the lack of media coverage for one of their underrated comedic gems and have revealed what went wrong with the failed Oscar push behind I Love You, Beth Cooper.
Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone), I Love You, Beth Cooper was released to small $1.75-a-ticket “art house” cinemas shortly after its release on July 10. It was an Internet sensation and according to Google, ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper boobs Hayden Panettiere nude’ was one of the most searched terms during the week of the film’s release.
When asked how he felt about the Beth Cooper snub, Columbus was forthright: “How do you expect me to feel? I put two weeks of hard work into this project and for what? To have the Oscar campaign fall in the cracks? This was...

Hugh Hefner may have millions of cash and many more Playboy models, but they couldn't save him from getting noticed by the Razzies, who highlight the worst in film every year. Despite his money and magazine-making ladies, what this awards ceremony is really focusing on his acting skills, because it turns out, he doesn't really have a good supply.
The 83-year-old founder of Playboy magazine wasn't exactly nominated for his scenes on The Girls Next Door. After all, that is "reality" and he needn't act for that. So that means, Hef's Razzie nod is for his performance on the comedy Miss March.

Here’s an alternative award giving ceremony that those in Hollywood don’t like! The Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) always announce their awards right near the Oscar noms in a bid to steal some thunder and to remind us all that some movies suck! For the likes of Sly Stallone, it’s the gift that keeps on giving. He’s received most nominations in practically every category going! Some like Halle Berry (Worst Actress for Catwoman) and Paul Verhoeven (winner for Showgirls) have turned up at the ceremony and graciously accepted their awards. See? Some Hollywood folk do have a sense of humour!
Leading the pack this year is G.I. Joe, Land of the Lost, Hannah Montana and the controversial inclusion of R. Pattz and Kirstin Stewart. Here’s the full list of nominations:

We're less than 10 hours away from the 2010 Oscar Nominations (as of this posting), and as per usual, the Razzie Awards -- which celebrate the worst in cinema -- are announced the day before. And as usual, the Razzies nominate the most obvious movies -- the spectacularly bad popular movies, actors, and actresses (not that there's anything wrong with that). From a cursory glance at the nominees, it appears as though the same five movies dominate every category and Sandra Bullock may be the most nominated this year (ironic, since she'll also likely be nominated for an Oscar) for her role in All About Steve. Transformers 2, G.I. Joe, Old Dogs, New Moon and Land of the Lost are the other big titles on the list. There's really no excuse for leaving out Paul Blart or Year One, though.
