Jack Reynor is reuniting with his “Sing Street” director John Carney for the musical comedy “Power Ballad.”
He will star alongside Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Described as an “uplifting and music-driven story,” the film follows a wedding singer, a rock star — and the song that comes between them. It’s unclear who any of the three actors will portray.
This marks the fourth collaboration between Reynor and Carney following the musical comedies “Sing Street” and “Flora and Son,” as well as the Amazon Prime series “Modern Love.” Reynor is also known for Ari Aster’s horror film “Midsommar,” “Transformers: Age of Extinction” and Amazon’s TV series “The Peripheral.” He’ll be seen next in Netflix’s “The Perfect Couple” adaptation and Amazon’s series “Citadel,” now in its second season.

While the dual union strikes of the writers and the actors postponed some projects, once the studios and unions reached an agreement, there was a lot of catch-up to play. The postponed schedules meant that this year is seeing a delay in several releases. It also looks as if some studios are going to see some releases grouped together. According to The Hollywood Reporter, popular Netflix shows that would have seen a more dispersed schedule are now bunched for later 2024.
The latter half of the year will see the continuation of Netflix’s slate of popular original programming like the anticipated new season of Squid Game, the streaming platform’s biggest series of all time. The schedule will also premiere The Night Agent as well as the final season of the popular Karate Kid sequel series, Cobra Kai. The new season of Outer Banks is also on the dock, plus...

Liev Schreiber is getting candid about what he’s learned about fame over the years, saying that it alone won’t make people truly happy.
The Emmy-nominated actor shared in an interview with Haute Living magazine, published online Thursday, that after decades in the entertainment industry, he realized the importance of working on projects that he’s actually passionate about.
“I work for hire, as they say, and like to make money,” he explained. “I have a growing family. The older I get, the more I think I want it to matter when I work. Of course, it doesn’t always — in fact, it rarely does — but it’s nice when it does, when one of your jobs means something to people. That feels good, like the job does what it was supposed to do in the beginning, which is to connect you to people.”

Sue Naegle and Ali Krug are in business with Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
The Emmy-winning pair has signed an overall deal with the Universal division through which their newly established Dinner Party Productions will develop and produce series.
This marks the first time former UTA, HBO Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures boss Naegle has worked directly with Universal. She exited her Chief Content Officer role at Annapurna in 2022. As we reported at the time, Krug had initially taken over her TV division responsibilities, but has since reunited with her former boss and long-time production partner to launch Dinner Party.
In development is a series adaptation of Elon Hilderbrand’s novel ‘The Five-Star Weekend’ for Universal’s sister streamer Peacock, with Bekah Brunstetter penning the script. The book follows a popular food blogger, who, after a tragedy, brings friends from distinct times in her life to spend a weekend in Nantucket.

After his "nightmare" experience with, and subsequent departure from, the troubled development of the next Scream movie, it would appear that Happy Death Day/Freaky director Christopher Landon has found a much less stressful next gig. He's back with the Blumhouse family for a new thriller called Drop, which has The White Lotus' Season 2 breakout Meghann Fahy starring.
Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach are behind the script for this one, which surely no one will be all that surprised to learn is being kept quiet on the plot front. But Deadline has heard it's "a fast-paced thriller". What can we speculate based on the title? Er… A drop of poison is involved? Or probably more likely it might involve a potential fall from a great height? (Likely with fewer bonkers vulture interactions).
This one will be a co-production between Blumhouse and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes gang, with Universal handling distribution.

Exclusive: John Patton Ford is writing to direct an untitled film for Netflix with 21 Laps producing. Ford wrote and directed the Aubrey Plaza starrer Emily the Criminal.
The drama follows a mysterious Union spy named James Andrews who, along with infantry volunteers, stole a Confederate steam engine and planned to destroy the entire Confederacy’s supply line to end the war.
Racing along at speeds up to 60 mph, they destroyed track to the main Southern supply route behind them and shut down communications by cutting telegraph lines, all to disrupt the Confederacy’s supply line. The six surviving raiders became the first to receive the Medal of Honor, awarded by Abraham Lincoln. The caper also would be the historical basis for Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent film The General.

Before Baz Luhrmann took award season by storm with "Elvis," he made "Australia." If you've forgotten about the 2008 epic starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, you're not alone; the movie wasn't exactly embraced upon release, and while it made plenty of money at the box office, it also became a bit of a punchline among critics that year. As Stephanie Zacharek wrote in a review for Salon, "The second half of 'Australia,' Luhrmann's attempt to pull off a wartime weeper, is so aggressively sentimental that it begins to feel more like punishment than pleasure."
So what does "Australia" have to do with "Faraway Downs"? Well, everything. The upcoming six-episode limited series set to drop on streaming next month has been branded as a reimagining of Luhrmann's movie -- a second stab at his Australian "Gone With The Wind." It's an unusual choice from an always-interesting filmmaker, and we'll know...

One down, and more to come.
That’s the word from SAG-AFTRA and studio Ceos after meeting officially Monday for the first time since the 160,000-strong guild went out of strike on July 14 – they plan to do it again.
“SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP met for a full day bargaining session and have concluded. Negotiations will resume Wednesday, October 4,” the two sides said this evening in a joint statement, reminiscent of the communication sent out from the WGA and the studios in their successful final round of negotiations last month.
Like today, the Wednesday meeting is being held at SAG-AFTRA’s Wilshire HQ and the CEO Gang of Four — NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley, Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and Disney’s Bob Iger — are expected to be in attendance with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers president Carol Lombardini. Update: We are getting a flood of phone calls tonight that Netflix’s B-roll filming of limited series The Perfect Couple in Nantucket was significantly disrupted by local SAG-AFTRA pickets.
We just heard from several local SAG-AFTRA actors and a local strike Captain in Nantucket there that when they learned of the production resuming shooting via permits –even without the series’ major cast– they smelled something fishy and headed to the Massachusetts island. Essentially, the word was out that the production was looking for people who were just driving cars. That’s a union actor’s job being taken away. “They’re messing with our money,” one Massachusetts actor tells Deadline tonight. Again, none of the major cast showed up to filming today.
It is unclear if Kidman and producers were aware of this B-roll shoot. Kidman was recently part of the group of celebrities who each donated $1M or...

The Toronto International Film Festival will honor one of Canada’s own, Montreal native Shawn Levy, with the inaugural Norman Jewison Award, also named after another Canadian great filmmaker.
The Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award is presented by The Budman Family, and recognizes Canadians in the film industry who have made a global impact with their careers. The awards presentation will take place at the TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
Levy originally set about pursuing a career in acting, attending Yale University. He turned to directing and received an Mfa from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1994. One of Levy’s first acting gigs was the low-budget horror 1987 movie, Zombie Nightmare, which got poked at on an episode of Comedy Central’s Mystery Science Theater 3000. By the end of 2022, Eve Hewson was already having a very good year by virtue of the fact that she was one of the stars of Sharon Horgan’s “Bad Sisters,” a very serious and very funny series about a group of four Dublin sisters who scheme to kill the man who is abusing their fifth sister. Then the “Nepo Babies” furor erupted after a December article in New York magazine, and Hewson — whose father is Paul Hewson, aka U2’s Bono — dropped a couple of funny tweets and came across as one of the few who handled it all with wit and perspective.
