Exclusive: Netflix has enlisted Yon Motskin (Encounters) to direct an untitled documentary feature on Connecticut native Nathan Carman, a young man who, after a fishing trip with his mother Linda off the coast of New England, survives a week on a life raft while she is lost at sea.
As highlighted in the doc, the sensational incident renews interest in the unsolved murder of Carman’s wealthy grandfather years earlier, spurring a media frenzy, a war over a vast family fortune, multiple investigations and ultimately federal charges against Carman for murder on the high seas. He died by suicide last summer while awaiting trial in connection to the death of his mother.
With unprecedented access to family, friends and investigators, the film currently in production is a nautical thriller that explores intimate human mysteries about family, greed, perception, mental health and the unpredictable mind of an enigmatic young man.
Motskin is producing alongside Mary-Jane Mitchell.

Exclusive: Topic Studios, the award-winning production company behind titles like Theater Camp and 100 Foot Wave, has laid off over 20 employees, multiple sources tell Deadline. Employees were notified on Tuesday, and we hear that almost all divisions are affected, with all of those working on the TV side being cut.
A company spokesperson emphasizes that despite changes being made when it comes to the small-screen arena, “Topic Studios continues to produce television programs. This week’s staff changes have not impacted the multiple scripted and non-scripted television projects in production and development. While our scripted television strategy will be evolving, we plan to increase investment in this area.”
The layoffs come at a time of general turbulence in entertainment, which is still reeling from last summer’s double strikes and the pandemic that preceded it. Other media companies hit with mass layoffs just recently include Amazon, Hallmark Media, Great American Media,...

Documentarians Cecilia Peck and Inbal B. Lessner (“Seduced: Inside the Nxivm Cult”) and Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (“Love Fraud”) not only share similar shooting philosophies, in focusing on vérité, but they are also passionate about centering their projects on female survivors’ stories.
The four-part Starz series “Seduced” explores the connection between a few women, including India Oxenberg, who escaped the clutches of Nxivm and its more dangerous subsets Jness and Dos, while the four-part “Love Fraud” for Showtime follows a group of women (including bounty hunter Carla Campbell) as they go after the con man who stole their hearts and a lot of their money.
These four powerhouses came together to talk about their experiences making these two Emmy contending series, as well as the sense of healing and justice they wanted for their subjects.

The past year in lockdown may make the idea of a comedy about being stuck in an endlessly repeating loop feel a little too close to home, but Palm Springs starring Andy Samburg and Cristin Milioti, which arrives on Friday the 9th of April, is fresh and funny and well worth your time. For something more serious and very well regarded, there’s Sound of Metal on Monday the 12th, starring Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing. And if lockdown’s simply been too much fun and you need bringing back down to earth with a bleak tale of German teenage drug addiction, there’s We Children from Bahnhof Zoo.

Love and fraud are two things that should never be written or spoken in the same sentence, but unfortunately these words find themselves put together far too often. Sometimes the people we meet and fall in love with aren’t who they say they are, and that’s what Showtime’s new docuseries, Love Fraud, is all about. The show follows the stories of real people who found themselves completely caught off guard when the man they were dating turned out to be a complete con artist. All of the women featured in the show have been manipulated by the same man, Richard

“Heidi [Ewing] and I had always been very interested in sociopaths of all stripes,” Rachel Grady said in an interview with IndieWire.
Grady and Ewing are the directors of Showtime’s new true crime documentary, “Love Fraud.” The four-part series follows a group of women conned by one man, Richard Scott Smith, and the “revenge squad” that forms to take him down.
Grady and Ewing have created a filmography aimed at looking beneath the veneer, starting with their 2006 documentary, “Jesus Camp.” In the case of “Love Fraud,” the two wanted to look at the world of double lives, and initially, they set out to tell a story about someone with multiple families.
“You hear these stories, and it’s always extremely puzzling why the fuck anyone would do that,” Grady said.
It was producer Alex Takats who discovered the real story, stumbling onto a blog aimed at exposing Smith and the crimes he’d committed.

Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady have never helmed their own docuseries before, but that all changed with “Love Fraud,” a four-part project for Showtime that follows a few of the women who were in relationships with, and robbed by, polygamist Richard Scott Smith. What made the difference, Ewing tells Variety, is that it was a story of “real crime in real time.”
Instead of picking up interest in a cold case or basing a series off a well-known article, the duo found a blog that detailed women’s experiences with Smith and they decided they wanted to get involved. But they didn’t just want these women to recount their stories; they wanted to help them (with an assist from a bounty hunter named Carla) go after the fugitive Smith — to try to finally see him brought to justice.

In the sixth episode of Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer’s docuseries “The Vow,” Sarah Edmondson, a whistleblower who was once in the inner-circle of Nxivm and also a part of its master-slave subgroup Dos, is asked outright if she is a victim. Although she answers quickly in the affirmative, she also makes it clear that she made choices during her time working with the organization. Some of these choices simply kept her involved, while others were direct recruitment of other young women. To some, this may paint her in the colors of someone more culpable than coerced.
But the truth is much more complicated. And what Noujaim and Amer endeavor to do with their nine-part HBO docuseries is peel back the layers of the psychology of not only the women who found themselves in this organization that purported to be one of self-improvement, but also of its founder and high-ranking officials,...

Welcome back to Tune In: our weekly newsletter offering a guide to the best of the week’s TV.
Each week, Variety’s TV team combs through the week’s schedule, selecting our picks of what to watch and when/how to watch them. As many across the country continue to practice self-isolation due to coronavirus, why not while away a few hours on some of the shows below?
This week, “Love Island” returns and “I May Destroy You” season 1 comes to an end.
“Love Island,” CBS, Monday, 8 p.m.
The U.S. version of “Love Island” is back for a second this week, with plenty of love, but less island. This season is being shot and produced out of a rooftop villa in Las Vegas due to coronavirus production limitations. Still, expect there to be plenty of coupling, uncoupling and drama as another group of singles seek to find their special someone.

“Love Fraud” starts out like any episode of “Catfish” or “Dr. Phil”: a group of women admit to meeting a man through over social media or via various dating apps. He’s perfect. He’s a pilot, or an entrepreneur, or a businessman, and he’s able to lavish them with expensive dinners (like the Olive Garden), jewelry, and all the affection you’d expect from an ideal suitor. But soon things get weird. He says “I love you” after two weeks, moves in quickly, and proposes marriage faster than you can repeat those three little words back to him. Then, as soon as the women say “I do,” they’re heartbroken and literally broke. All they have left are questions: What just happened?

Showtime is bulking up its programming slate with a slew of documentaries to offer viewers now content as the ongoing pandemic continues to put Hollywood’s film and television productions on hold. The premium cabler has picked up Matt Tyrnauer’s “The Reagans” and is making plans to air a handful of documentaries in its Sunday primetime slot in the summer.
Variety reported that “The Reagans,” a four-part documentary about Ronald Reagan’s presidency, will examine what happened behind the closed doors and in the halls of the West Wing from 1981 through 1989. The docuseries does not have a release date and hasn’t been confirmed to air on Showtime during a Sunday primetime slot. Vinnie Malhotra, Showtime’s executive vice president of nonfiction programming, told the publication that the project would examine the high points of Reagan’s presidency, as well as the more controversial elements of his time in office.

Showtime has announced the premiere dates for “The Go-Go’s,” premiering Aug. 1 at 9 p.m.; “Love Fraud,” debuting on Aug. 30 at 9 p.m., and “Belushi,” which is set to premiere on Sept. 27 at 9 p.m. “ The Go-Go’s,” a documentary feature, chronicles the first all-female band to play its own instruments, write its own songs and soar to No.

Sometimes a story just begs to be told. Documentary filmmaker Heidi Ewing (Oscar-nominated “Jesus Camp”) thought she knew her good friends, Iván and his partner Gerardo, who she met in a lower Manhattan neighborhood bar in 2005. The Spanish-speaking Ewing (thanks to an Cuban old boyfriend) hung out socially with them, danced salsa, and they came to her wedding in 2007.
But eight years ago at Pizza Noodle on Main Street, when “Detropia” played Sundance, the couple told her more of their history. “There were dimensions to my friends I didn’t know existed,” she told me on the phone as she waited for her reps to close a deal with Sony Pictures Classics for her first narrative feature, “I Carry You With Me.” She wrote and directed this true romance about her friends today, as well as “a past that shaped them in so many ways.”
