Horror fans, we're happy to report that the upcoming Spyglass horror rom-com Heart Eyes finally has a theatrical release date. Unfortunately, the movie won't be coming out this year, which was expected since production just recently wrapped in New Zealand in July. The film is currently in post-production. However, Sony will be releasing this movie in theaters early next year. Feb. 7, 2025, to be exact. Don't forget to save the date!
Heart Eyes is described as a Valentine's Day slasher. Josh Ruben directed the film from a screenplay co-written by Phillip Murphy (Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy.
Taking place in Seattle, Washington, Heart Eyes follows a pair of co-workers working overtime at their job during Valentine's Day. But things take a turn for the worse when an infamous couple-hunting murderer known as the "Heart Eyes Killer" shows up at their job and mistakes them for a couple.

February 14th is a Friday in 2025, so that would seem to be the perfect choice of release date for a horror romantic comedy that’s set on Valentine’s Day, which is what the movie Heart Eyes is. But the February 14th release date has already been taken by Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and Paramount’s Smurfs animated movie… so Sony Pictures has chosen to release Heart Eyes on February 7th. Its competition on that date is the Universal action movie With Love, starring Ke Huy Quan.
Coming our way from Josh Ruben, the director of Werewolves Within and Scare Me, Heart Eyes was scripted by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, Landon’s Freaky collaborator Michael Kennedy (who also wrote It’s a Wonderful Knife), and Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard). The film has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a...

If you're a horror fan, you're familiar with Blumhouse Productions (cited as Blumhouse from here out). Even if you're not a horror fan, you've probably watched a Blumhouse film without knowing it ("Whiplash?" "Jem and the Holograms?" "Tooth Fairy?"). Jason Blum's nightmare factory is synonymous with today's mainstream horror pillars, securing the rights to everything from "Halloween" to "The Exorcist" and beyond. Indeed, it's impossible to banter about our contemporary horror era without acknowledging how prevalent and prodigious Blumhouse has become — so why does it feel like it's ghosting us this year?
Blumhouse decimated last year's horror movie market. In 2023, Blum's juggernaut scared up nearly $800 million worldwide in box office totals. Emma Tammi's video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's" boasted a high score of $297 million on a $20 million budget — one of nine films released by Blumhouse. Now, there's no metric for reporting for streaming titles like...

Bad Bunny needs a pair of stylish golf shoes and a visor for his latest acting gig! According to The Hollywood Reporter, the musician and actor will star alongside Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2. NFL star (and Taylor Swift’s arm candy) Travis Kelce and Benny Safdie appear in the comedic sequel, with Nick Swarsdon playing a caddy.
Kyle Newacheck directs Happy Gilmore 2 from a script by Sandler and his trusty collaborator Tim Herlihy. Yesterday, Netflix announced a production start for Happy Gilmore 2 alongside a photo of Happy’s iconic Boston Bruins jersey hanging on a wardrobe rack. Streaming services have been struggling of late. What was initially a new medium of entertainment, one that a slew of production houses invested in heavily, has proven to be a short-term money-making gimmick rather than something that production houses would like to sustain long term.
Not only has it hurt home media sales, it has practically eradicated an entire line of revenue for films, making quite a few studios wonder if it is worth working with streaming at all.
Time Cut, Netflix’s upcoming slasher film || Credit: Netflix
Netflix’s Time Cut, a film that is described as Back to the Future meets Scream, is a telling sign of how content on streaming is dwindling, given that Amazon Prime has already done the concept. Fans are not impressed by Netflix’s attempt at bringing a concept that’s already been done by a rival service, calling out the creative bankruptcy of the service.

It's been15 years since Modern Family premiered, so a good time to focus on how old the cast of this hit ABC comedy was then and now!
Some may have forgotten that the first episode of Modern Family had a twist at the end. It appeared to be a documentary focusing on three different families in various levels of marriage. The final scene revealed they were one large extended family of the Pritchetts.
For 11 seasons and 250 episodes, viewers loved to see the family grow amid various escapades and misadventures, but the family bond was always there. It was a big ratings hit and won five Emmys for Outstanding Comedy series to boot.
The show signed off in 2020, but the cast has reassembled for some commercials, so here's a look at how old they are now!

Who wants to travel back to a time when the most significant threat to the nation was a red-scaled demon with a bifurcated tail and great taste in music? That’s right, folks! Satanic panic is back, thanks to Peacock‘s Hysteria! teaser trailer! Hide your kids! Say your prayers! Prepare for a moral panic that is more appealing than anything you see on today’s news!
Here’s the official (and lengthy) synopsis for Hysteria!:

That fear haunts every generation. Children of the Atomic Age went on to terrifying their families by turning on, tuning in and dropping out in the sixties. Those same “free spirits” went on to vote for Reagan and called for censorship of the “obscene” and “satanic” heavy metal bands their own kids worshiped. The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards are back this year and bigger than ever.
Once again airing on AMC’s Shudder, the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards has shifted the annual awards show’s shift to October; as such, the window of this year’s eligible horrors is an expanded one, encompassing all of 2023 and the first half of 2024. That means a much bigger selection of horror titles to pull from, and with the expanded categories this year, that means a massive list of 46 nominees. They even have a new category this year: Best Video Game.
Here’s where you come in; Fangoria needs your vote to decide on the winners! We have it on good authority that some of the categories are extremely competitive right now. And voting happens to be officially open for the awards show.
Participants can cast their votes via the official Fangoria website at www.fangoria.com/vote/. Voting...

The only award season that matters is here! Joking (kind of), but seriously, Fangoria just released the complete list of nominees for the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Considering how often horror gets shut out of the mainstream award shows, it's nice to have at least one thing we can rely on year after year.
Last year's Chainsaw Awards included big wins for movies like The Black Phone, Terrifier 2, and Prey. This time, the categories are again stacked, with films like Abigail, Evil Dead Rise, The First Omen, Talk To Me, Late Night with the Devil, and many more going head to head.
Specific performances are also being highlighted, like Tobin Bell in Saw X and Kathryn Newton for both Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. It's been a fantastic few years for horror, and it'll be exciting to see which movies pull ahead this time around.
In addition to popular categories such as Best Wide Release,...

Heart Eyes is currently filming in New Zealand. Josh Ruben will direct the film, co-written by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard) and Freaky scribes Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy. Landon was previously attached to direct the seventh Scream movie, also in the works at Spyglass.

Now Deadline reports that the Spyglass project Heart Eyes, described as a horror romantic comedy, has started filming in New Zealand, with Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from Spyglass’s two Scream movies leading the cast. We don’t know whether or not Gooding is going to show up in Scream 7, but he just can’t seem to avoid the slashers.
Josh Ruben, the director of Werewolves Within and Scare Me, is at the helm of Heart Eyes, working from a screenplay that was written by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, Landon’s Freaky collaborator Michael Kennedy (who also wrote It’s a Wonderful Knife), and Phillip Murphy...

Exclusive: Cruel Summer actress Olivia Holt and recent Scream franchise star Mason Gooding are set for the Spyglass’ original horror rom-com, Heart Eyes, which is rolling cameras in New Zealand.
The latest pic builds on the campy horror canon that Spyglass is building in the wake of 2022’s Scream, last year’s Scream VI and Thanksgiving.
In the new pic, when the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.
Spyglass has tapped horror comedy filmmaker, Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within and Scare Me) who’ll helm from a screenplay written by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard) Christopher Landon & Michael Kennedy (Freaky). Landon and Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks are producing. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone will serve as EPs with Murphy.
Ruben said, “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.”
Holt can next be seen starring in the rom-com Jingle Bell Heist and has a guest starring role on Peacock’s new comedy series Laid. Holt most recently starred in Cruel Summer and Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger for Freeform and Amazon’s horror comedy Totally Killer. Last year, Holt made her Broadway debut as the iconic Roxie Hart in the classic musical Chicago. The actress is repped by WME and Entertainment 360, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman.
Gooding is well known for playing Chad Meeks-Martin in the global box office hits Scream and Scream VI. He will next be seen in Kyle Mooney’s disaster comedy Y2K and marked his feature film debut in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart. Gooding is repped by CAA, Sugar23 and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
Ruben’s feature directorial debut Scare Me premiered at Sundance 2020. He also starred on Dropout’s comedy series, Make Some Noise. He is repped by Artists First, CAA and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
Spyglass Media Group, LLC recently produced the Amazon MGM Studios the $55M-plus holiday hit The Boys in the Boat, and has the high school comedy Incoming as well as the iconic fashion competition television series Project Runway.

While film awards have mostly been steady as they go, despite the WGA and SAG strikes last year, the TV awards timeline has been tied in absolute knots to the point where one deserves an award for even being able to guess which season of a show is in contention.
Normally, an announcement like the 2024 WGA Awards nominations would let us know what new shows are likely to become the next class of Emmy contenders. This year, what sticks out more are the nominees whose awards runs are still chugging along a year after their premieres. All the nominees in the New Series category — “The Diplomat,” “Jury Duty,” “The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” and “Shrinking” — are for TV seasons that have already just finished their Emmy runs. Because the WGA Awards go by calendar year, rather than the traditional TV schedule, their nominations create one more awards stop on...

“Don’t breathe. Don’t look back,” commanded the tagline for the movie Twister from 1996. Apparently, that’s not a warning that Universal Pictures wants to heed. Instead, they’re looking back to the ’90s with a new adventure about storm chasers and the flying cows in their wake with the upcoming sequel Twisters.
That said, first trailer for Twisters features no familiar faces. Not only do we see no characters played by actors who sadly passed in the interim, such as Bill Paxton’s Bill or Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Rusty, but also missing is Helen Hunt’s protagonist Jo.
In their place is a new cast, primarily Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) as Kate Cooper and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as Tyler Owens. Based on the trailer, the script by Mark L. Smith focuses on the braggart Tyler luring Kate back into the world of stormchasing after an expedition gone wrong.

Author Mary Shelley has inspired horror creators since the 1800s, but never like Lisa Frankenstein. Zelda Williams brings Diablo Cody's undead teen romance to life like the second coming of early Tim Burton, harvesting an uncanny gothic romance from spare human parts. It's caught somewhere between Riverdale, Edward Scissorhands, and Warm Bodies, a good crossroads to call home. Williams and Cody inject surges of teen girl empowerment through their morbidly adorable Frankenstein tale, which can feel like a hammy 1980s sitcom, yet transcends expectations with an avalanche of campy, almost wall-breaking silliness.
Kathryn Newton shines as the horror-loving Lisa Swallows, a high school recluse who rarely speaks after the axe murder of her mother. Lisa now lives as a black sheep with her cheerleader stepsister "Taffy" (Liza Soberano), high-strung stepmother Janet (Carla Gugino), and easygoing father Dale (Joe Chrest). Taffy tries to help socialize her squirrely new sibling, but...

Peacock is ready to get Laid.
The NBCUniversal-backed streamer has handed out a straight-to-series order for Laid, a comedy starring Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and from writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna.
Khan (Young Rock, Always Be My Maybe) and McKenna (Son of Zorn) are writing and exec producing the series for Universal Television, where the former’s Fierce Baby is based with an overall deal.
Laid revolves around a woman who finds out that her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her “sex timeline” to confront her past in order to move forward. Peacock says Laid is a “f—ked up rom-com where the answer to ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.’”

We’ve seen Groundhog’s Day as a slasher with Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Life as a slasher with It’s a Wonderful Knife, Freaky Friday as a slasher with Freaky, and Back to the Future as a slasher with Totally Killer. Next in the “this movie, but it’s a slasher” line-up is Departing Seniors, which mixes the high school slasher set-up with elements from Stephen King’s The Dead Zone. Dark Sky Films will be giving Departing Seniors a limited theatrical and VOD release on February 2nd, and with that date right around the corner a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of actress Clare Cooney, Departing Seniors was written by actor Jose Nateras and centers on high school student Javier, who doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular kids as a queer Mexican-American.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.
Thus, creating a top-ten is always a bit tough. It’s a mixture of subjective and objective critiques, personal preferences mixed with universally regarded favorites. With that, there’s been more than enough written about Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, etc. that...

Here on Bloody Disgusting we’ve published several articles (find them all here) covering *our* favorite horror movies of last year, but it’s always interesting to take a look at year-in-review roundups from other places as well. Letterboxd, for example, kicks off each new year by spotlighting the previous year’s top hits, and their full 2023 Year in Review is now live.
As always, films are broken up into various categories based on highest user ratings, including the 10 Highest Rated Horror Movies of 2023. It’s hardly surprising that the list is topped by horror hits including Talk to Me, When Evil Lurks, and Scream VI, but there are also several films on the list that you probably wouldn’t expect – and maybe haven’t even heard of.
Here are Letterboxd’s 10 Highest Rated Horror Movies of 2023…
10) Huesera: The Bone Woman 9) The Passenger 8) Birth/Rebirth 7) Vincent Must Die 6) Scream VI 5) Romancham...

First off, it wouldn’t be an incredible year if I didn’t have a ton of honorable mentions. The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

The story of horror movies in 2023 is one of extreme ends, with the most out-there experiments flourishing while more standard genre fare fell flat. There was no terrifying instant classic destined to be rewatched at Halloween parties for years to come, in the way that “Barbarian” and “Hereditary” emerged in past years. But several long-running franchises like “Scream” and “Saw” put out well-received sequels that provided shots of adrenaline to decades-old I.P. — while the freshly adapted and distinctly mediocre “Five Nights at Freddy’s” dropped jaws at the box office. And indie horror continued to flourish, with breakout hits like “Skinamarink” proving that it’s still possible to shock audiences with nonexistent budgets.
Still, the real horror breakouts of 2023 were the comedies and the auteur-driven dramas that just happened to scare us. Satires such as “The Blackening” and “Totally Killer” lampooned tired horror genre tropes, while goofier standalone films like...

Plot: A year after stopping a masked slasher’s killing spree, a teen girl wishes she had never been born. As a result, she gets a glimpse into a world where she never existed – and the killer is still slashing their way through her hometown.
Review: Separately, Tyler MacIntyre and Michael Kennedy have delivered two of the most popular cult slasher films of recent years – Tragedy Girls and Freaky. Now they have teamed up to bring us It’s a Wonderful Knife, a film that follows the current trend of giving slasher movies a high concept twist. Happy Death Day was a time loop slasher, Totally Killer was a time travel slasher, Freaky was a body swap slasher. This time, we’re getting a movie that asks, “What if It’s a Wonderful Life had a masked killer in it?”
The first sixteen minutes of It’s a Wonderful Knife play like a regular,...
