The following article contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3.
Whether you were a fan of the "Star Wars" prequel character Jar Jar Binks or one of his original critics, your heart was probably lifted when you saw actor Ahmed Best in the third season of "The Mandalorian." By now, most of us know that Best went through absolute hell because of his portrayal of the Gungan senator in the prequels, leading him to consider suicide.
The character was hit with complaints that he was racially insensitive, subservient to white characters, and using a speech pattern that enforced these stereotypes. When Best posted about his harrowing experience, according to a feature in The Guardian about the new podcast "The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks," fans rallied around him. He was given the persona of Jedi Master Kelleran Beq and hosted the children's game show "Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge."

"You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain," Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) declares in "The Dark Knight." Well, when it comes to George Lucas' "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, it's the opposite. In an era of cookie-cutter tentpoles that refuse to take risks or say anything meaningful about the real world, many "Star Wars" fans have formed a newfound (if somewhat begrudging) respect for Lucas' idiosyncratic prequel films. That reappraisal extends to those who acted in Lucas' films, perhaps none more so than Jar Jar Binks performer Ahmed Best.
As with his "Phantom Menace" co-star Jake Lloyd, Best was the target of much-undeserved scorn for his work on the prequels. It's why it's been so rejuvenating to see "Star Wars" fans embrace Best as he takes a second go at the franchise playing the Jedi Master Kelleran Beq. Having started out as the...

In the climactic scene of "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 3, "The Convert" -- a "Brazil"-influenced, Coruscant-set cautionary tale about the machines of power and the stubbornness of evil -- poor Dr. Penn Pershing has been betrayed, while acting with good intentions. Now he's strapped to a table, about to be brainwashed by a feared former Imperial tool called the "mind flayer." In the depths of his terror and despair, he pleads for mercy with the Mon Calamari doctor, telling him: "It was a trap!"
You know, like Admiral Ackbar? Remember when Admiral Ackbar said "it's a trap!" in "Return of the Jedi"? And people liked that line, and when internet memes were invented it became a meme? It's just like the meme, except now someone is saying it to a Mon Calamari character instead? Isn't that funn-- Oh, Dr. Pershing just got his brain fried.

Last week's episode of The Mandalorian featured the debut — on the show at least, if not the galaxy — of Jedi knight Kelleran Beq. And it also marked the return of a Star Wars veteran to the fold in the shape of Ahmed Best.
Beq, who actually originated in Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge, a game show created for StarWarsKids.com and YouTube. But The Mandalorian offered a chance for the character to get some truly heroic action in a flashback to how he helped save Grogu from Clone Troopers during Order 66.
Best who brought Jar Jar Binks to life across the three prequels (and Clone Wars), famously dealt with critical fans and those lambasting the character. So you can understand his concerns about returning.

Ahmed Best had to think long and hard about guest-starring in the latest episode of Disney+’s The Mandalorian, due to the “rollercoaster ride of emotions” he endured as the prequel film trilogy’s Jar Jar Binks.
A floppy-eared Gungan introduced in 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Jar Jar was met with some backlash — either framed as a blatant ploy by Lucasfilm to cater to kiddies, or criticized as a “Rastafarian Stepin Fetchit on platform hoofs” (as the Wall Street Journal put it back in the day). Regardless of the accuracy of such attacks, “Because of the backlash,...

In the latest episode of “The Mandalorian,” longtime “Star Wars” fans were given a major surprise when Ahmed Best — the actor behind CGI prequel trilogy character Jar Jar Binks — made a return to the franchise as a different character, Jedi Master Kelleran Beq.
But while Best’s casting may be a shot of nostalgia for many viewers, the actor himself had his reservations about heading back to the galaxy far far away.
“Honestly, I had to think about it,” Best said in an interview with the official StarWars.com website. I’ve been in the Star Wars world for such a long time and my story is such a rollercoaster ride of emotions. So coming back to Star Wars wasn’t an easy decision for me. It wasn’t something I could have immediately said yes to. I did have to marinate over it for a bit.”

Chapter 20: The Foundling

.
The team of F&f — Favreau and Filoni really love incorporating obscure deep cuts into The Mandalorian series. It’s actually a clever, subtle way to marry all the elements from the established universe in Star Wars. All the way back to the pilot episode, in almost a test of memory and fandom, Favreau added a creature only known from the Ewok spin-off movies from the 80s. The surprise references range from minute details, like a rifle that appeared in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, to an all-out appearance of a main character, like bringing Return of the Jedi-era Luke Skywalker back in the second season’s finale or the live-action debut of the popular character, Ahsoka.
Entertainment Weekly reports on an unlikely return of a former actor from the past Star Wars movies.

Ahmed Best is getting a shot at redemption by returning to the Star Wars universe as a Jedi in The Mandalorian.
The actor voiced the infamously CGI character Jar Jar Binks in the prequel trilogy of the George Lucas saga. Audiences were not fond of the Gungan and the character was phased out in the subsequent films.

Ahmed Best is best known for playing the controversial character Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. But in this week’s episode of “The Mandalorian,” he added another, human character to his Star Wars resume. Best made a cameo as a Jedi master named Kelleran Beq.
In “Chapter 20: The Foundling,” Best played Beq in a flashback to Grogu’s escape from the Jedi temple when it was under attack by Order 66. Beq, who works as a teacher of young Padawan at the temple, finds the baby Yoda alone in an elevator, and fights off clone warriors with two lightsabers as he gets the child out of the building.
This actually isn’t the first time Best has played Kelleran Beq. As Entertainment Weekly notes, he first portrayed the Jedi in 2020, when he hosted in character a children’s game show called “Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge...

The newest episode of "The Mandalorian" season three, released on March 22, shows for the first time how a padawan Baby Yoda - aka Grogu - escaped the Jedi temple during the "Revenge of the Sith" era. That's when Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and the clones followed Order 66 and attacked all Jedi and the younglings. Viewers - and Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) - first learned that Grogu had been present at the temple that day during season two, but episode four of the third season shows through Grogu's eyes how that terrifying day went. He was saved by one Jedi in particular, and that character is played by the same actor who also starred as Jar Jar Binks in the prequels! Here's how it went down.
Which Jedi Saved Grogu From the Jedi Temple?
As we see in a flashback, Grogu was rescued by the Jedi Kelleran Beq.

Ahmed Best is putting his best foot forward in the modern “Star Wars” franchise.
Over two decades since his portrayal of the controversial Jar Jar Binks in the 1999 prequel film “The Phantom Menace,” Best appeared in Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” Season 3 as Jedi Kelleran Beq. Best stars in the episode “Chapter 20: The Foundling,” during which Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, has a flashback to Order 66 and the takedown of the Jedi temple. Grogu is saved by Beq (Best), who tells him that “everything’s going to be all right, kid” before killing clone troopers.
Best previously played Beq in 2020 online kids’ game show “Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge” and even had a cameo in “Attack of the Clones” as a Beq relative, Achk Med-Beq.
Best previously opened up about the toll of playing Jar Jar Binks in 2019, revealing that he contemplated suicide over the racism-fueled backlash to the character.

In a surprise cameo that nobody in a galaxy far, far away saw coming, Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best returned to the “Star Wars” universe in Wednesday’s episode of “The Mandalorian.” But instead of playing the infamous Gungan, Best made his return as a Jedi named Kelleran Beq.
In the newest episode, titled “The Foundling,” Best appears briefly in a flashback to Order 66, when the clone troopers betrayed the Jedi and ruthlessly murdered nearly everyone. Best’s Jedi knight Kelleran saves a young Grogu, who found himself alone facing a group of clone troopers. Kelleran saves the little alien and dispatches the enemies with his two lightsabers, allowing Grogu to escape with him on a ship. The episode ends without showing where Kelleran and Grogu fly off to, opening up the possibility of Best to reappear later on.
This isn’t the first time Best has played Kelleran.

The Mandalorian Reveals Grogu's Savior During Order 66 — and He Sorta Hassa Big Prequel Trilogy Ties
The Mandalorian this week shed light on how exactly Grogu was saved years ago from the Order 66 bloodbath — and the reveal involved a big-time (iffa polarizing!) prequel trilogy callback of sorts.
The early gist of Season 3, Episode 4 (titled “The Foundling”) opened with the first steps in Grogu’s training to eventually rise up to Mandalorian apprentice level. That involved a challenge, against a Mandalorian kid, to a game of “darts” — which in this case are wrist-fired paintballs. The first to score three hits wins, and sure enough, Grogu’s opponent easily splats him with both of his first two salvos.

This Star Wars review contains spoilers for The Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 4: Chapter 20
With a brisk 32-minute runtime, “The Foundling” is an entertaining but somewhat shallow episode of The Mandalorian that feels inessential when compared to the three entries leading up to it. There’s nothing introduced here, thematically or narratively, that sends the story in new directions, though several scenes do strengthen the roots of the lore.
At the end of “The Convert,” we saw the Tribe welcome Din, Bo-Katan, and Grogu with open arms, and we see the continuation of that here, with Grogu beginning his foundling training. The show can’t lose when it focuses on Din and Grogu, and Bo-Katan is creeping her way into that equation, too. When she assures Grogu that Din is just pushing him into training because he’s “proud,” it establishes that she understands them and is slowly becoming...

While the latest installment of "The Mandalorian" focuses on a Children of the Watch rescue mission, the episode also takes a detour pivot to the fateful night of Order 66 on Coruscant, showcasing how Grogu was rescued from the Jedi Temple. This segue occurs in a rather organic way when Grogu relives his past while the Armorer (Emily Swallow) forges a new beskar rondel for the child. Jar Jar Binks voice-actor Ahmed Best returns in his first full-fledged live-action appearance as Jedi Master Kelleran Beq, having previously played the character in the kids' game show "Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge." Needless to say, it is thrilling to see Best return, especially in a pivotal role where his character saves Grogu's life.

While defending “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show this week, Liam Neeson brought up how extreme backlash to the film from “Star Wars” fans robbed Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best from a career that could have rivaled Eddie Murphy. Best performed in motion capture and provided the voice for Jar Jar Binks in George Lucas’ “Star Wars” prequel trilogy. Outrage over the character drove Best out of Hollywood and got so extreme it even led the actor to contemplate suicide.

The Star Wars prequels have undergone a huge shift of opinion within the fandom over the past few years, and Jar Jar Binks is part of that. Many have forgiven the character who was once treated as a punching bag, and even those that have a problem with the goofy Gungan are big supporters of Ahmed Best, who gave the role his all and stands as a pioneer of motion capture performances.
In fact, a recent Twitter storm caused by Boba Fett actor Mark Anthony Austin shows just how much things have changed. Austin recently posted an old Bts image (see below) of Best in his Jar Jar get-up on set and wrote: “So glad I got cast as Boba Fett and not some other character,” along with a trio of crying laughter emojis. Clearly, someone didn’t get the memo that prequel-bashing isn’t cool anymore in 2020.

There are only a handful of characters in fiction as hated as Jar Jar Binks was in Star Wars, and while we can hardly do anything about how people react to their favorite stories, it’s good to know that Ahmed Best has done everything he can to not let all the backlash and toxic behaviour get to him.
Still, this sense of entitlement from the fans has plagued the actor’s life for nearly 20 years now. There’s nothing wrong with not liking a character, mind you, but harassing an actor and blaming them is plainly stupid. This is the same thing that Kelly Marie Tran went through with The Last Jedi, where a handful of people who didn’t like Rose Tico in Rian Johnson’s flick continued to insult the actress on social media platforms.
