Neill Blomkamp will follow the success of Gran Turismo with Alpha, starring Aaron Paul as an FBI agent hunting a prison inmate turned into an apex predator.
Neill Blomkamp hasn’t had a lot of luck with getting projects to the screen in the last decade. Plenty of ink has been spilled about his aborted take on Alien 5, but there’s also RoboCop Returns, the Halo film (although that project’s demise led directly to District 9) and, dare we say it, District 10.
The last project on that list may yet happen, some day. Blomkamp began talking about a sequel to his beloved science fiction movie back in 2021, with star Sharlto Copley adding a couple of years ago that it was still at least a year away from shooting. We’re now two years on and there’s still no sign of the film coming together.

Ridley Scott’s original Alien film set the benchmark for sci-fi storytelling. Its claustrophobic setting and practical ‘alien’ creatures led to some terrifying scenes, elevated by the performances of its lead cast. The success of the film spawned the Alien franchise and the latest installment Alien: Romulus is running successfully in theaters.

Many filmmakers have been inspired by Scott’s Alien films and have tried to put their own spin on the human vs alien narrative. One of the most inventive entries in the 2000s was Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 which is already deemed an iconic film. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel and Blomkamp himself is hopeful that a potential District 10 will most likely get made down the line.

What have we become? In my 14 years at JoBlo, I never thought I’d add the term “Skibidi Toilet” to our back-end tag cache. Yet, here I am, trying not to curl into a fetal position while spiraling into despair as I type the following words. The filmmaker with an explosion fetish, Michael Bay, and Paramount Pictures president Adam Goodman, are developing a Skibidi Toilet film and TV franchise. Kill me now.
Are you still with me? The duo discussed bringing the evolving digital video short series to other entertainment arenas on the latest episode of Variety’s “Strictly Business” podcast.
“We are absolutely in talks right now, both on the television side and the earliest conversations right now on the film side,” Goodman said. “But it’s not a be-all, end-all for us.”

Gen Alpha is most familiar with the concept of Skibidi Toilet. Being a YouTube series, the shorts feature a battle between human-headed toilets and humanoid characters equipped with electronic devices.
Skibidi Toilet: The Modern Side of Michael Bay?
It’s a bit hard to describe the kind of videos and shorts that Alexey Gerasimov posts on his YouTube. Nonetheless, the series found worldwide fame and love by Gen Alpha and became known as Skibidi Toilet.

As if it wasn’t ubiquitous enough as digital video shorts or games, “Skibidi Toilet” may be headed for a future as long-form content, too.
The controversial animated internet sensation is being developed for TV and film treatment by director Michael Bay and former Paramount Pictures president Adam Goodman, who sat last week for an exclusive interview about their plans for Skibidi on the latest episode of Variety’s “Strictly Business” podcast.
“We are absolutely in talks right now, both on the television side and the earliest conversations right now on the film side,” Goodman said. “But it’s not a be-all, end-all for us.”
That Goodman is even presenting migrating Skibidi IP to TV or film as an option is a testament to the audience size the property has amassed on YouTube and Roblox, where the monetization opportunity is ample. As a new Variety Intelligence Platform data analysis makes clear,...

It can seem that the science fiction genre went through a crisis right after the success of the Wachowskis’ Matrix in the 2000s. If we ask you to name at least 2 gems of the genre that were made in that decade, it’d probably be a problem recalling them.
However, it’d be unfair to say there weren’t decent sci-fi films at all, as back in 2009 the world saw a 90%-rated gem that is still recalled by Reddit. It is even getting dubbed ‘absolutely brilliant’ by fans who claim it’s still a must-watch for every sci-fi veteran.
Set in Johannesburg in 1982, it starts off by showing that a giant extraterrestrial spaceship lands there all of a sudden. It turns out that aliens are forced to stop on Earth not to conquer humankind, but because they’re sick and out of sustenance.

“Inside Out 2” roared into cinema in June, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film in a debut weekend of all time, while its current worldwide haul at this time of writing stands at just over one billion.
The first movie — one of the most ingenious films of this century — took audiences inside the head of young Riley as she navigated a move to a new city while her emotions tried to guide her through the move in her head. This second film brings back those emotions as Riley goes through her teenage years. But Joy and Sadness and the gang have to deal with several new emotions in headquarters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui.
But while the film marches towards $1 billion at the box office, could it also be marching towards awards glory? Well, animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often,...

When Netflix launched "The Witcher" back in 2019, it was the streamer's attempt to kickoff a big fantasy franchise on the level with "Game of Thrones" or "Lord of the Rings." The move made sense. After all, not only are the "Witcher" video games very popular, but the Andrzej Sapkowski books they're based on offer a unique and different perspective on fantasy than other mainstream titles thanks to their Slavic mythology influence. This means the "Witcher" TV series and its spinoffs have a lot of rich source material to take inspiration from and change as they deem fit (something the main "Witcher" show has done a lot in the past). Netflix's "The Witcher" was also a huge hit, with the first season gifting us a viral hit song in "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher."

After the surprise success of District 9 in 2009, Neill Blomkamp was the new darling of the film industry. The original, intriguing, and thrilling film about aliens stranded on Earth came From the fallout of a failed attempt to get a movie based on the Halo videogame franchise off the ground. The film was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, legitimizing Blomkamp as an innovative storyteller.
Blomkamp leveraged the success of District 9 to land a much larger budget for his next effort, 2013’s classism sci-fi Elysium. It was met with moderate critical and commercial success. He followed that up with the humbler and more intimate Chappie in 2015, which failed to impress critics or turn a profit, despite a cast with sci-fi pedigree, including Sigourney Weaver.

Copley is best known for his breakout role in the sci-fi film “District 9.” He has since starred in features such as “The A-Team,” “Elysium,” “Chappie,” and “Hardcore Henry.” He also stars in Dev Patel’s upcoming film “Monkey Man” and appeared in multiple episodes of the Netflix series “Russian Doll.

Before we see It star Bill Skarsgard get revenge in The Crow remake this June, we’re going to have the chance to see him get revenge in another action thriller, Boy Kills World, which is set to reach theatres on April 26th. With that date just a few weeks away, a red band trailer for the film has arrived online – and this one is packed with positive review quotes, including a nod to the 8/10 review written by JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray! (You can read it Here.) Check it out in the embed above.
Produced by the legendary Sam Raimi, the film marks the feature directorial debut of Moritz Mohr. It was scripted by Arend Remmers (Sløborn) and Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury: The Movie). The story takes place in a bizarre, dark dystopian universe and centers on a deaf and mute character, Boy (Skarsgård), who navigates this depressing world with his otherworldly imagination.

After playing Pennywise and before playing Nosferatu and Eric Draven, Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of a deaf-mute action hero in Boy Kills World, a one-of-a-kind action spectacle set in a dystopian fever dream reality. The film comes from producers Sam Raimi and Roy Lee, and Bloody Disgusting has got the Red Band trailer you’ve been waiting for.
The Boy Kills World Red Band trailer plays up the humor, manic energy and “kill fest” violence of the film, with one particular pull quote from Daily Beast referring to the bloody experience as “R-rated Looney Tunes on acid.” The film is indeed rated “R” for “Strong bloody violence and gore throughout, language, some drug use and sexual references.”
Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions will release Boy Kills World into theaters on April 26, 2024. Whet your appetite for violent mayhem with the official Red Band trailer below!

This Is Spinal Tap is one of the most quotable films in cinema history and defined the genre of film known today as the mockumentary.
Rob Reiner’s 1984 directorial debut about an aging English metal band chronicled fame, groupies and their fateful tour and would set the bar for the style of film to satirize a subject depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary. They often use the conventions of traditional documentaries, such as interviews and narration, to tell a fictional or exaggerated story.
Christopher Guest, who portrayed Nigel Tufnel in This Is Spinal Tap, would go on to direct and star with an incredible ensemble cast in many of his productions that included Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge in the classic mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration and Mascots.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, are teaming up with director Jonathan Liebesman – who they previously worked with on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – to make a werewolf movie called Wolf Night. Now Deadline reports that Wolf Night has found a home at Sony’s Screen Gems.
Michael Bitar is overseeing the project for Screen Gems, while Alex Ginno does the same for Platinum Dunes.
Screen Gems has put out a whole lot of horror movies over the years, with titles including Don’t Breathe, Resident Evil, Underworld, Deliver Us from Evil, The Grudge, Carrie, The Stepfather, Prom Night, The Pope’s Exorcist, Insidious: The Red Door, and the upcoming Tarot. We had learned about an interesting horror project earlier this month titled Wolf Night, a werewolf movie set to be directed by Jonathan Liebesman. The film has been compared to both District 9 and The Purge… with werewolves… and Deadline brings us a big update this week.
The hot Platinum Dunes package has been picked up by Screen Gems, Deadline informs us, with Michael Bay and Brad Fuller producing Wolf Night for Platinum Dunes.
Will Honley and April Maguire wrote the screenplay for Wolf Night, but aside from the comparisons to the aforementioned movies, the plot is under wraps at this time.
Jonathan Liebesman’s directorial credits over the years also include Rings (2005), The Killing Room (2009), Wrath of the Titans (2012), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014).
Will Honley recently wrote Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.

They say “In space no one can hear you scream.” Buuuuuuuut we’ve seen through eight Alien films that if you’re in a spaceship plenty of people can hear you scream. The Xenomorphs have no problem causing their victims a lot of pain. Even though we’ve seen them in a lot of films, fans will mostly agree that after Aliens, the franchise was never the same. But did you know that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp almost made an Aliens sequel?
In 2015, filmmaker Blomkamp announced he had been working on a new Alien project. This was even a surprise to Fox, which owned the series. Fans seemed excited by the prospect of the director taking on the project after the imaginative sci-fi films he had been releasing. Ultimately, after some starts and stops, the film would fall apart. Let’s find out exactly why here on What Happened To This Unmade Movie?...

Dev Patel's feature directorial debut "Monkey Man" hit the ground running with its world premiere at South By Southwest ... but before the movie about an underground brawler hell-bent on revenge became a reality, the actor-turned-filmmaker says it was an idea he was hesitant to bring to life himself. /Film's Ryan Scott is attending SXSW in Austin this week, where Patel spoke about how he went from an actor and co-writer on the project to the man behind the camera.
"I was just trying to find a way to tell this story," Patel explained. "I wanted it out there. Originally, I hired a friend to write it." Paul Angunawela ("Keith Lemon: The Film") and John Collee ("Hotel Mumbai") are both credited as co-writers on the final product, but initially, Patel says two of them worked on it during an intense year-long process. The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.
Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

Exclusive: Here’s a big one that multiple studios are bidding on right now from Platinum Dunes: Wolf Night.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles filmmaker Jonathan Liebesman is attached to direct on a screenplay that’s being billed as District 9 by way of The Purge — but with werewolves. Will Honley and April Maguire wrote Wolf Night.
Liebesman is a South African filmmaker whose movies have grossed $1.3 billion at the global box office; his titles include Platinum Dunes’ 2014 live-action reboot of Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Warner Bros’ Wrath of the Titans, Sony’s Battle Los Angeles, New Line’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Revolution Studios/Sony’s Darkness Falls. He’s an EP on the MTV series The Shannara Chronicles and directed four episodes of Paramount+’s Halo series. Liebesman also executive produced the Universal Robert Downey Jr. family movie Dolittle.

Bill Skarsgård has quickly become an actor whose very presence in a film suggests something twisted is about to go down -- that's what happens when you play a child-eating clown monster in two of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time. But where "Barbarian" cleverly used that foreknowledge to subvert audience expectations and "John Wick: Chapter 4" embraced it by casting the "It" star as the slimeball Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont, Moritz Mohr splits the difference in his feature directing debut, "Boy Kills World." Instead of casting Skarsgård as a blood-thirsty killer, the film casts him as a righteous killer in the vein of John Wick himself. And you know what? It might just work!
While it didn't exactly blow critics away last year during its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, "Boy Kills World" still managed to garner praise for its distinct blend of bloody slapstick action and irreverent comedy.

Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit.” And apparently they did kill it, because Deadline reports that Amazon’s Prime Video has just secured the international rights to the film in a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10 million. The film is currently in post-production, so we don’t know when Prime Video will be releasing it.

This article contains spoilers for Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12 episode 1.
Much of “Atlanta,” the first episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s 12th and final season, plays out as we’ve come to expect from a Larry David misadventure. Our favorite misanthrope heads to the city of peaches to just generally piss everyone off. Victims of Larry this time around include a wealthy South African entrepreneur (played by District 9‘s Sharlto Copley), a hotel maid at the end of her rope (Ann Hurd), and even Leon’s beloved Auntie Rae (Ellia English).
It’s all fun and good but it’s admittedly missing some of the “oomph” you’d expect from the premiere of a beloved comedy’s final season. Thankfully that oomph arrives during the show’s end credits, which play over what is surely one of the best visual gags in the series’ entire run. Behold: Larry David’s mugshot.

Fans will always debate which is the better film: Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror "Alien" or James Cameron's 1986 sci-fi actioner "Aliens." As important and influential as Scott's film was, Cameron upped the ante in terms of pure popcorn thrills, and a big part of that film's success was the character of Newt, played by Carrie Henn.

The "Halo" season 2 trailer has arrived, and it brings with it the return of Master Chief who is now facing a new, familiar threat to those who played the games: The Covenant. Indeed, this season will see the sword-wielding aliens wreaking havoc. It appears that the folks at Paramount+ spared no expense in crafting the second season of this show, but will that be enough to turn it into the series everyone hoped it would be in the first place?
This trailer is very moody and overflowing with gloomy action. It's got a "Starship Troopers" vibe to it at times, just without all of the vibrant color and blatant political commentary. We're also, once again, seeing Master Chief without his helmet off an awful lot. Love it or hate it, that element of the show remains in place. It's very cinematic and a lot of the visual effects look big-screen worthy.

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

Exclusive: Neill Blomkamp’s alien abduction thriller They Found Us has shut down pre-production in Saudi Arabia as it reworks its finance structure, we have learned.
Suicide Squad and For All Mankind star Joel Kinnaman is attached to star in the AGC Studios-backed movie, which was due to get underway in coming weeks. Cast had yet to travel to set.
A growing number of sizeable English-language movies are choosing to film in Saudi Arabia. Among big productions to recently shoot in the territory have been AGC’s Anthony Mackie pic Desert Warrior — currently in post-production — and Gerard Butler movie Kandahar. They Found Us is among a handful of U.S. productions being made in collaboration with Saudi production hub Neom.
The move to restructure the finance plan behind the independent movie comes just as tension in the region is growing due to the Israel-Gaza crisis.

After a six-year run leading Miramax, CEO Bill Block is exiting the studio, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Block’s contract at Miramax, co-owned by beIN Media Group and Paramount Global, expired this week and was not renewed. The executive started as CEO in April 2017.
The studio is looking to develop projects based on its own intellectual property rather than aiming to acquire projects, a source close to Miramax’s owners said. A search is underway for a new top executive.
Miramax, founded by Harvey and Bob Weinstein and then later purchased and sold by Disney, has largely been known in recent years for its expansive library of more than 700 films. However, since Block joined and its acquisition by BeIN and Paramount, the studio has tried to make a bigger push into producing and distribution with the relaunch of the Halloween franchise, as well as films such as The Gentleman,...
