Shannon Woodward and Nicole Richie have been cast in the ABC comedy pilot “Bucktown,” Variety has learned.
In the multi-cam sitcom, after being dumped by her boyfriend and kicked out of her apartment on the eve of a big promotion, Amy (Woodward) finds refuge at her mom’s house in the blue-collar neighborhood where she grew up. Amy reconnects with her teenage niece, living there due to Amy’s sister’s latest rehab stint, and resolves to stay when she realizes that her mom and niece aren’t quite equipped to go it alone.
Richie will star as Jan Amy’s boss. Described as a self-centered force to be reckoned with, Jan sucks up all the energy in the room. She is very professional, except when it comes to the wildly unprofessional partnership she has with her husband – Finn.
Woodward will next be seen in the Apple series “Corazon” opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Well before Quibi debuted, it seemed inevitable that the service was doomed. Sure, it didn’t help that a streaming platform dedicated to short-form videos had the incredible misfortune to drop during a global pandemic that confined millions to their homes with way more time than they knew what to do with. But it only took a few minutes skimming through the app to understand that Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s very concept of Quibi was flawed, pandemic or no. With no immediate ability to watch content on anything but a phone screen, no thought of letting viewers screenshot shows in order to share them, and no compelling answer to “isn’t this just expensive YouTube?”, Quibi didn’t have a grasp on what its audience might want until well after it launched.

“The person who’s going to be checking these nominations the closest is going to be Jeffrey Katzenberg because this is going to be a test of whether or not his Quibi experiment can work,” Gold Derby associate editor Zach Laws says in a slugfest with contributors Riley Chow and Luca Giliberti about the Short Form races at the 2020 Emmys (watch the video above). “It should be tailor-made for these short form categories,” continues Laws about the new streaming service, which only produces series with episodes under 10 minutes, making them eligible almost exclusively in the short form field.

Quibi’s “Nikki Fre$h” is an exaggerated account of Nicole Richie‘s quest to reinvent herself as an eco-conscious trap music icon. Like “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” this streaming series is filmed like a mockumentary without fourth-wall breaks making it one explicitly. With Richie uncredited for scripting and presumably showrunner Carrie Franklin uncredited as director, this hilarious cringe comedy takes after Sacha Baron Cohen‘s characters in blurring the line between fiction and reality. With a roster that includes her father Lionel Richie and husband Joel Madden, plus Bill Nye the Science Guy, the show’s celebrity guest stars turn in such naturalistic performances that it can be hard to tell if they are acting — or why they would agree to such self-deprecating material.

The Best Short Form Comedy/Drama Series slate has mostly been wiped clean for domination by Quibi, a new streaming service comprised entirely of short-form content. Netflix made a play last year with three entries, but they are sitting out this time. Also clearing the stage are two past nominees that were expressly produced to get Emmys for their headliners, as neither “An Emmy for Megan” nor “This Eddie Murphy Role is Mine, Not Yours” returned for a third season. Sundance swept last year with the critically-acclaimed “State of the Union,” but that network does not have a player this year.
See our rundown on 15 of Quibi’s new short form series.
So Quibi is filling that void with ten new shows, six of which are strong contenders. The app’s flagship is an adaptation of “Most Dangerous Game,” which is additionally being campaigned by CBS Television Studios under Viacom.

In the first scene of the first episode of “Nikki Fre$h,” Nicole Richie — clad in a floor-length gown and bejeweled headband, with her assistant Jared in tow — saunters into her husband Joel and brother-in-law Benji Madden’s office for a meeting where she pitches the Good Charlotte members on her next big idea: making trap music for her plants. Or, more specifically, a new sub-genre she dubs “parent trap.”
The inspiration for the scene came from an actual pitch meeting Richie had with the Madden brothers. Her trap alter-ego — and the one taking center stage on the short-form series streaming on Quibi — Nikki Fre$h is rooted in a hashtag Richie started using to accompany posts about her edible garden.
“I fell in love with it, and started hashtagging all my harvests because that’s what Oprah does so I was like, I have to also,” Richie told Variety on the “Variety After-Show.
