Following her Oscar-winning role in Room that catapulted her to the big leagues, Brie Larson signed on for her marquee gig as Captain Marvel in the MCU. While she was a pivotal figure in the narratives of the franchise, her second standalone film The Marvels which was released in 2023, failed to impress at the box office.

But a look back at Larson’s filmography will show that the actor has faced even more criticism for one film that earned the dubious distinction of being the quintessential white savior movie. A discerning fan brutally pointed out the grave stereotypes propagated in this film that would make even the Oscar winner cringe today.

From Disney darling to Academy Award winner, Brie Larson has carved a unique path in Hollywood. At just 30 years old, she has already acted in various movies, from small independent ones to big blockbusters. She even tried her hand at directing, with projects such as The Arm (2012), Weighting (2013), Unicorn Store (2017), The Dew Project (2021).
Her latest movie is The Marvels, in which she played Captain Marvel again. However, it didn’t perform well, partly due to criticism from fans who disliked the story or the villain. Negative reviews further compounded the issue, and there were problems with promoting the movie because of actor strikes.

Brie Larson may have been the first female superhero to lead a Marvel film, but that doesn’t mean she dove into the idea headfirst.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Captain Marvel star revealed that the idea of playing the superhero frightened her originally because of the potential effects of the global superstardom that could come with it.
“I was scared of what would happen to me,” she told the publication, sharing that she was worried that taking on a major role in a billion-dollar franchise would cost her the ability to be a normal person in the world and prevent her from doing the things she loves.
Larson explained that the choice she had about whether or not to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe felt surreal to her. “I was like, ‘What world is this, where these are the choices I have to make as an artist?...

Siddhartha Khosla, one of the busiest composers in TV with ongoing assignments for “This Is Us,” “The Kids Are Alright” and “Marvel’s Runaways,” has made the move to Ascap, the performing-rights organization announced Wednesday.
For all of his steady television gigs, “This is Us” remains by far the most prominent, partly because he provides prominent acoustic scoring for so many emotional moments— or, as NPR put it, “Siddhartha Khosla has tiptoed into the tear ducts of millions of Americans.”
But “This is Us” also stands out because Khosla is able to exercise his songwriting chops there, too, in addition to scoring. Mandy Moore sang “Invisible Ink” on the show this season. Another original song written for the series, “We Can Always Come Back to This,” topped the blues chart and recently picked up a nomination from the Guild of Music Supervisors for best song/recording for television.

Brie Larson will take a break from cosmic combat as Captain Marvel to headline a CIA-centric TV series for Apple.
Brie Larson is already having a big week as her starring role in Marvel Studios’ first female-headlined movie, Captain Marvel (read our advance review), readies a weekend release. However, it’s just been boosted by another major coup in the medium of television. Indeed, the burgeoning small screen streaming platform of tech giant Apple has procured Larson as the star for what appears to be a major peak television offering.
Apple has signed Larson to star in a yet-to-be-titled drama in which she’ll play an undercover CIA operative. While details about the series are scarce, it is said to showcase “a provocative and contemporary look at a young woman’s journey in the CIA, told through the prism of her closest relationships.” Writer Megan Martin...

The bulk of specialized business continues to come from the usual Oscar contenders that have dominated the scene for months now. The annual package of Oscar nominated shorts proved the strongest new opener this weekend.
Among limited releases, an exclusive showing of last year’s Sundance entry “Golden Exits” (Vertical) leads the field. It remains to be seen what happens to the business when these run out of steam before long in most cases.
As a reminder that winning an Oscar does not guarantee audience good will for future openers, Indian/American anti-corporate musical “Basmati Blues” (Shout! Factory) starring Brie Larson (“Room”) managed only around $8,000 in 10 theaters.
After making a big Super Bowl splash with the unexpected dropping of “The Cloverfield Paradox” after the game, Netflix opened three movies this weekend, but only one (Sundance documentary debut “Seeing Allred”) in theaters. Last year’s Toronto premiere “The Ritual” and romantic...

The trailer for Basmati Blues fell perilously from the sky in November 2017, dropping like a radioactive sludge onto Twitter and beyond. What was this dated anachronism of offensive jokes and stale plot lines? Who is the audience for such blatant and unfunny India bashing? And how in god’s name did they get Room Oscar winner Brie Larson to star? It led to an explanation from the filmmakers that this international trailer “the wrong impression of the film’s message and heart,” and it was quickly scrubbed from existence.
That explanation was not inaccurate. Basmati Blues is an inoffensive trifle. It does not warrant outrage; it’s not bold enough to risk it. Yet there is some heart, and undoubtedly, some ambition. Danny Baron’s film is a musical, and for a first-time filmmaker, that takes some chutzpah. Above all else, there is Brie Larson, a performer likable enough to...

Films that actors make before they find fame can come back to bite them years later, as Larson discovered when the trailer for a rice-based romcom she filmed in 2012 was met with derision
This week, a trailer was released for the upcoming Brie Larson film Basmati Blues. It was met with derision immediately. The Oscar-winning star of Room was accused of playing a “white saviour” role in a clunky, culturally insensitive romantic comedy. The film-makers were quick to claim that the trailer doesn’t represent the film’s true spirit, but Basmati Blues is still potentially embarrassing for a star at the top of her game.
The truth is, Basmati Blues was filmed in 2012, before Larson had her breakout turn in Short Term 12. However, it struggled to make it to the big screen – a common problem in movie distribution. Whether the reason is practical, financial, legal, strategic or just bad luck,...

Even after her incredible lead performance in last year’s Short Term 12, Brie Larson is still flying just under the radar. The actress’s star is sure to rise in coming months, though, as she appears opposite Mark Wahlberg in possible Oscar contender The Gambler then takes the lead role in musical comedy Basmati Blues. However, Larson’s biggest chance to break out would seem to be in the upcoming Room, adapted from the controversial bestseller by Emma Donoghue.
Now, it has been announced that Larson will be joined in the drama by William H. Macy, Joan Allen and child star Jacob Tremblay (The Smurfs 2), all of whom are taking on key roles. Donoghue’s 2010 novel centered on a five-year old boy (Tremblay) who lives inside a small “Room” with his Ma (Larson). To the boy, Room is home, but Ma knows the truth – that, seven years ago,...

Brie Larson is set to continue her move into leading roles by starring in Room – the film adaptation of the 2010 bestselling novel of the same name. The past 24 months have seen Larson transition from strong supporting turns in excellent movies – such as 21 Jump Street, The Spectacular Now and Don Jon – to leading roles in Short Term 12 and the upcoming Basmati Blues. Room will present a new challenge for the young actress, and an opportunity to flex some truly heavy dramatic muscle.
The novel was written by Emma Donoghue – seemingly inspired by the case of Elisabeth Fritzl, whose lengthy imprisonment in her father’s basement had ended just two years earlier. Told entirely from the perspective of a five year old boy, the story gradually unfolds to reveal the fact that the boy and his mother are living in a small room, which they never leave. Brie Larson is a name that moviegoers should start getting used to. She has already seen some mainstream traction with supporting parts in 21 Jump Street and Don Jon. Her turn in that film notched Larson some well-deserved awards buzz. Now, on her steady path to conquer Hollywood, the actress has signed on to Trainwreck for producer/director Judd Apatow and sketch actor and writer Amy Schumer.

After wading through Development Hell for a while, drama remake The Gambler got a boost recently when Mark Wahlberg signed on to star and Rupert Wyatt considered directing. Now Brie Larson is in talks to co-star alongside Wahlberg.According to Deadline, it’s still early days for Larson’s possible involvement, as she’s only talking about a role. But considering how her career has been going recently – there’s awards chatter about her performance in Short Term 12 – she’d be a big win for the movie. Larson’s not the only potential recruit: Jessica Lange is being courted to jump aboard too.The Departed’s William Monahan wrote the new iteration of the script, which was penned for the original 1974 version by James Toback. The Gambler follows a literature professor whose gaming addiction lands him in trouble with his girlfriend, his family and, possibly most dangerously, some nasty gangsters.
