- Vex and Vax race through the early morning streets of Emon, evading guards and heading for Gilmore's Glorious Goods. Keyleth, beast shaped as a squirrel, sneaks in through a grate and lets the other half-elves in before the guards catch up. They sneak upstairs to get supplies, and are immediately caught by Gilmore. After they explain their situation, the boisterous merchant forgives their stealthy entrance and helps them find what they need to fight a vampire. Keyleth accidentally gets caught in a finger trap, and Gilmore notices as Vax helps her out of it and tries to hide his obvious crush. After purchasing their supplies, the three find the rest of their friends. Grog, Percy, and Scanlan have stolen a cart, and the party begin their journey to Whitestone. Along the way, Vex and Percy strike up conversation in front while Scanlan and Keyleth continue to make slow progress on the Briarwoods' book. One thing they are able to find are references to a 'ziggurat', an ancient pyramid-like structure built to contact gods. Grog is upset without Pike, and Vax comforts him. Vox Machina make their way far from Emon, going deep into a dark forest. Suddenly, they are surrounded by monstrous, mutated wolves. The creatures do not attack the party directly, but rather grab Scanlan, still holding Delilah's book, and race away. Percy gives chase in the cart. Vex tries to shoot the beasts in front, while Grog and Vax try to hold off the ones still following from behind. Vax gets bitten by one of the wolves, angering Keyleth, who frightens it off with her beast shaping abilities and surprising strength. Vex uses an enchanted arrow to destroy one of the wolves, but the one holding Scanlan does not relent, and heads straight for a cliff gap. She fires a rope arrow over the edge and tells Scanlan to grab on, as the party are forced to jump from the cart before it plunges off the cliff. The rope snaps, and the group fear they have lost their gnomish friend. However, Scanlan catches himself using 'Scanlan's Hand', his giant magical purple hand. The party are all alive, though they have lost all their supplies, and the book. The last remaining wolf returns the book to Lady Briarwood, as a group of civilians arrive to Castle Whitestone for an "event" held in their honor.
Vox Machina make camp in the woods. Scanlan practices a new spell from a scroll he got from the dragon Brimsythe, which allows him to shapeshift. Keyleth lights a fire with her magic, accidentally setting Vax's cloak on fire along with it. She dresses his wolf bite and tells him about her home, that she will one day have to return and lead her people. Vax edifies her, saying he believes in her no matter what. Vex looks on as the two share another awkward moment. Meanwhile, Pike arrives at a monastery of the Everlight, and pleas with the Head Cleric to help her reconnect with her deity. Scanlan sings a song for the party around the campfire, and they tell tales about their previous adventures. Percy does not participate, continuing to tinker with his weapons. While gathering firewood, Vex reminds Vax of how they escaped their childhood home of Syngorn and survived because they stuck together, and warns him to be careful about his feelings toward Keyleth. He assures her she has nothing to worry about. As everyone else sleeps, Percy flicks through the six barrels of his Pepperbox, and we see that each barrel is engraved with a name.
Vox Machina finally reach the outskirts of Whitestone, and Percy describes the city as a beautiful, thriving society, always in bloom thanks to the giant magical Suntree, planted by the Dawn Father in ancient times. The tree even serves as the de Rolo family crest. His companions vow to help him reclaim his home. As they arrive, they find the city and surrounding areas a desolate wasteland. Very few people walk the streets, and those that do look malnourished and retreat inside upon sight of the strangers. Even the Suntree itself appears to be dead. The city is patrolled by both guards and undead giants, and the party try to find somewhere to hide. As they approach the Suntree, they find a truly horrifying sight: seven civilians have been hung from the Suntree, including two young children. The corpses are dressed to resemble each member of Vox Machina.
