For a guy who writes about awful stuff happening to people, Stephen King sure likes liking things. Just think about how many times he’s used his position to praise other creatives and projects. “I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker,” declared his blurb for the American release of Books of Blood. “Tight, terrific, and very, very scary. Reminded me a bit of Duel,” he said of The Fall on Twitter in 2022. “Wish I’d written it.” Heck, his horror history book Danse Macabre ends with an appendix recommending over 100 books and nearly 100 movies.
But when the 76-year-old writer praises the upcoming film adaptation of his seminal novel Salem’s Lot , King’s word carries a bit more weight. King published Salem’s Lot, about a man who learns that his old hometown has become infested with vampires, in 1975 and is still regarded decades later as...

When The 100 debuted on The CW in 2014, it was a nice change of pace for the network.
The post-apocalyptic drama followed a group of survivors from The Ark who return to Earth nearly 100 years after a nuclear apocalypse.
With all seven seasons of the series being available to binge on Netflix, it's easier to watch the show than ever.
The 100 had an expansive cast because we met many different factions throughout.
Let's take a look at what the cast has been up to since the series wrapped.
Eliza Taylor - Clark Griffin
Clark changed dramatically throughout the seven seasons as the heroine at the story's heart.
She made decisions that divided the fan base and allowed viewers to witness all the ugly things that come with leading a group of people.
Taylor's breakthrough role was on the Australian soap opera Neighbours.

Lovecraft may have argued that the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown, but there’s no denying the intellectual thrills of unraveling a good old-fashioned mystery. After all, some answers can serve to make a story even scarier, and I have a personal soft spot for horror yarns about grizzled investigators attempting to piece together a morbid puzzle.
This is precisely why I’ve been a fan of the Saw franchise from the very beginning, with the detective angle behind all the blood and guts making this gruesome franchise stand out amongst other so-called “torture-porn” movies.
And with the long-anticipated Saw X on the horizon this week, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best investigative horror films ahead of Jigsaw’s latest killing spree. After all, sometimes it’s fun to figure out exactly why our protagonists are going...

Many genre figures have had biographical films done about them, Boris Karloff, Kane Hodder, and Robert Englund just to name a few. But I Am Monsters! is a little different from the rest. It’s a filmed adaptation of the autobiographical one-man show of the same name by Nicholas Vince.
For those for whom the name doesn’t ring a bell, Vince played Chatterer in Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II. That was the start of a long string of films that include another of Clive Barker’s films, Nightbreed, as well as films as diverse as The Black Gloves, They’re Outside and Fuck You Immortality. Coincidentally, his most recent film, How to Kill Monsters, also made its debut at this year’s FrightFest.

Summer movie season is heating up, but if you can’t make it out to a theater, there are plenty of great films to stream at home in May. This month sees the streaming debut of Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which, judging by the box office, many of you skipped seeing in theaters. The sequel hits Disney+ on May 17, a week after the Disney+ streaming debut of the Tom Holland-fronted “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and a couple of days before the Jack Harlow-fronted “White Men Can’t Jump” remake debuts on Hulu.
The well-reviewed drama “Air” — written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, directed by Affleck and starring both — comes to Prime Video on May 12 after an exclusive theatrical run, and Netflix has an Anna Nicole Smith documentary hitting on May 16.

Seth MacFarlane and his Fuzzy Door production company have signed with WME for representation. The move marks MacFarlane’s return to the agency following a move to CAA in 2017.
MacFarlane became the youngest showrunner in television history at just 24 years old when his animated series Family Guy aired on Fox. He went on to win 5 Emmy Awards for his work on Family Guy, four of which were in the outstanding voice-over performance category, making him a tied record-holder for the most voice-over Emmy wins of all time. The show, which aired its 400th episode late last year, has been renewed for its 22nd and 23rd seasons.
MacFarlane also serves as co-creator, executive producer, and voice actor on American Dad!, which recently aired its 17th season finale.

Stephen King's novella "The Mist" was originally published in 1980 as part of a horror compilation called "Dark Forces." The impressive compilation included stories by Ray Bradbury, Edward Gorey, Joyce Carol Oates, and Robert Bloch, along with several others. "Dark Forces" was notable in the horror community, and it was widely read by other horror authors. In the 1985 interview book "Faces of Fear," Clive Barker noted "Dark Forces" as the push he needed to start writing his own "Books of Blood."
"The Mist" was easily the standout of the compilation, and would eventually be adapted to film in 2007 by Frank Darabont. The film, like the novella, tells the story of a mysterious fog that rolls in across a small, rural community, cutting off all visibility. Hiding in the mist are unseen creatures. Enormous bugs and land octopodes appear from nowhere and attack the locals. The bulk of Darabont's film takes...

The cast includes Jemima Rooper, Kate Dickie, Franc Ashman and Keith David Bartlett.
“Matriarch” is written and directed by Ben Steiner (“Monsterland 2”). Executive producers include David Worthen Brooks, Arbi Pedrossian, and Jenna Cavelle with production services by Sharp House producers Ian Sharp and Eoin O’Faolain, and co-producer Alexa Waugh.

In Clive Barker's original short story "The Forbidden," published in Volume Five of his "Books of Blood" (called "In the Flesh" in the United States), the character of Helen is studying graffiti patterns in Liverpool as part of her college thesis research into urban legends. A lot of language in the original short story is devoted to the horrors of big city blight, and Helen aims to write a paper on "the semiotics of urban despair." As she delves further into Liverpool, she encounters repeated painted representations of the Candyman, a yellow-skinned ghoul with sharpened teeth and a hook hand, who is said to have committed many horrendous acts of violence in the neighborhood. In true Barker fashion, the protagonist's obsessions get the better of her, and she continues to probe until she encounters the actual Candyman.

Director David Bruckner’s Hellraiser reboot just made a big and gooey splash on Hulu. In its messy aftermath, folks are discovering the old burning questions fans have long had about the world of Cenobites and chains: Are these creatures, created by Clive Barker, demons out of the actual biblical Hell, and is their menacing puzzle box (aka the Lament Configuration) a gateway to the whole of damnation, debasement, and diabolical disfiguration? Or is it something more… delicious? The original Pinhead in 1987 teased that they are “demons to some, angels to others.” So can these monsters represent a more heavenly glow? (And is that any better?)

Christopher Young‘s brilliant Hellraiser score is nearly as synonymous with the film as Pinhead — but if writer-director Clive Barker had his way, the soundtrack would have been composed by British industrial music pioneers Coil.
Barker first became aware of Coil through Forbidden Planet, the UK’s enduring genre bookshop where band member Stephen Thrower worked. When Barker happened into the store, Thrower mentioned that he was a fan of his Books of Blood, and the two hit it off. Thrower eventually played him some of Coil’s music, and Barker was immediately won over.
Barker was quoted as saying that Coil is “the only group I’ve heard on disc whose records I’ve taken off because they made my bowels churn.” That’s high praise coming from the master of the macabre. Shortly after completing the script for Hellraiser, he told Coil that he wanted them to compose the music.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 41 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 13; last year only 28 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

A few movies may have been scared off by the pandemic (like Blumhouse’s “Halloween Kills” and MGM’s “Candyman” reboot), but Hollywood’s spooky season comes to a crescendo all the same this weekend with several new horror offerings.

To recap the other horror options that have come out this month, there are four “Welcome to the Blumhouse” movies on Amazon. Hulu had “Bad Hair” and “Books of Blood.” “Saw” co-creator Darren Lynn Bousman made “Death of Me,” while “Final Destination...

Halloween and politics are just two of the major themes onscreen in a month that offers a flood of brand-new movies on streaming services and VOD. October naturally brings its share of pre-Halloween horror movies, even when movie theaters are closed. Hulu released Clive Barker adaptation “Books of Blood,” which features fresh entries in the vein of the scaremeister’s popular short story anthology, and Amazon Prime launches Welcome to the Blumhouse, shrewdly packaging four of the low-budget horror studio’s not-slick-enough-for-theaters picks into a streaming event. The program launches this week with “Black Box” and “The Lie.”
But this isn’t just any October. Weeks before an all-important presidential election, politically engaged filmmakers are swooping in to sway undecided voters. That explains the surprise release of Alex Gibney and company’s “Totally Under Control,” which looks at the failure of the U.S government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

When it comes to low-budget horror movies, even the good ones tend to slip by unnoticed, which probably explains why “Salem” creators Brannon Braga and Adam Simon were drawn to a brand name like Clive Barker’s “Books of Blood” to package their otherwise generic Hulu horror anthology. Less a proper feature than the ersatz pilot for an open-ended number of future installments, this three-part scare-fest uses the flesh-flaying title chapter in Barker’s 1984 short-story omnibus, “The Book of Blood,” to frame two lesser entries with no relation to the beloved pulp collection — which has spawned such films as “Rawhead Red,” “Candyman” and “The Midnight Meat Train.”
The cleverest trick about Braga and Simon’s adaptation may be the way it uses a super schlocky red herring to throw audiences off the scent of the title, which Barker himself has cheekily described as “Everybody is a book of blood; wherever we’re opened,...

Clive Barker’s horror is immediately recognizable. One of the most influential Gothic voices of the 1980s and ‘90s, his stories on the page and screen mingle body horror with kinky fatalism: pleasure and pain sprinkled with an undercurrent of happy self-annihilation. He wrote and directed the exceptionally perverse Hellraiser, and with his literary Books of Blood collection of horror short stories, he penned the origins for future movie cult classics like Candyman—as well as the less glowing adaptations of The Midnight Meat Train and Rawhide Rex.
I’d like to say Brannon Braga’s Hulu adaptation of several of those Books of Blood tales lands closer to the hypnotic thrall of Hellraiser or Candyman, but this messy and ultimately garish film goes down like ‘80s junk of the Rawhide variety. With an obvious ear for Barker’s sweet romantic whispers about oblivion, Braga attempts to recreate a specific type of Gothic doom,...

The arrival of Clive Barker’s Books of Blood in 1984 and 1985 was an earthshaking event in horror literature. No less an authority than Stephen King called Barker “the future of horror,” leading to a tsunami of acclaim for the six volumes of collected short stories. Barker’s vast imagination, his creation of new monsters that eclipsed standard fare like vampires and witches, and his visceral, blood-soaked prose were a jolt for the horror genre that probably influenced a generation of writers and filmmakers.
Speaking of the latter, a number of stories from the books were adapted for the screen, including the title tale itself (which acted as a framing device for all the stories), “The Midnight Meat Train,” “Dread,” and “The Forbidden,” the latter of which formed the basis of the soon-to-be-rebooted Candyman franchise. Barker himself directed Lord of Illusions, based on the Books of Blood story “The Last Illusion.

One of the most important and haunting collections of horror writing released in our time, Clive Barker's Books of Blood (comprising six volumes in total) are the inspiration for a new movie coming to Hulu. In support of the film's release this week, I had a chance to catch up with Clive Barker and director Brannon Braga, who talked about their favorite anthology horror movies, what makes Books of Blood so special, and working with their cast on this adaptation:
How did the two of you team up for this Books of Blood adaptation and what made you decide that an anthology feature format was the best way to tell this story?
Brannon Braga: I first met Clive in 1987, standing in line for two hours at a bookstore, to get his autograph. We would meet many years later, because like millions of people, I'm a huge fan of his books.

A lot has happened in the world since Screamfest Horror Film Festival first started back in 2001, but even after two unpredictable decades, no one could have anticipated how different things would be for the festival in its 20th year. As the coronavirus-forced lockdown continues, movie studios have realized releasing new titles directly for consumers to stream and rent at home may continue to be necessary. Upcoming releases on subscription platforms and VOD range from horror films for stay-at-home Halloween to family movies for the holiday season.
While a handful of high-profile films still plan to premiere in theaters, there is a wealth of content to choose from on home viewing platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus or Apple Plus. Many more titles are available through virtual cinemas and on rental/purchase platforms such as iTunes.
October is particularly loaded with spooky new movies, including horror titles “Books of Blood” on Hulu, “Scare me” on Shudder and “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” on Netflix. Premiering Oct. 21, Netflix’s romantic drama “Rebecca” centers on a newlywed who is faced with the legacy of her husband’s late wife.

October is here, which means it’s the time of the season for getting scared. With Halloween gradually becoming a month-long celebration over the past few years — even if the coronavirus has put a damper on many activities such as trick-or-treating — one thing we can always look forward to during these 31 days is a deluge of horror movies old and new, whether via streaming, cable network marathons or even fleeting theatrical releases.
Horror is already a reliable genre both at the box office (under normal circumstances) and in the digital space, so it’s no surprise that even in these compromised times, scary movies are coming at us hard and fast in October. Below is a round-up of fresh horror releases arriving either at your local multiplex (and we urge you to keep the risks of going to the theater in mind) or right in your living room. It's an exciting time to be a fan of Clive Barker. In addition to the Books of Blood movie coming to Hulu on October 7th, a Hellraiser series in development at HBO, and a Hellraiser reboot feature film in the works, there's also a Nightbreed TV series in the pipeline, with the Great Imaginer himself involved.
In a recent interview with ComingSoon.net, Barker revealed that he's working on "the bible" for the series adaptation of his 1988 novella Cabal, and he also shared that the project is slated to be directed by Michael Dougherty, who is also part of the creative team developing the Hellraiser series at HBO. Dougherty confirmed his involvement with Nightbreed to Collider.
Here's what Barker told ComingSoon.net about returning to the world of Cabal, which he previously adapted for the big screen with the 1990 film Nightbreed:

The Clive Barker renaissance is now officially in progress. The latest news is that the long-developing TV series based on the horror/dark fantasy author and filmmaker’s 1990 movie Nightbreed has landed a director — and it’s Michael Dougherty, who helmed last year’s underrated kaiju epic, Godzilla King of the Monsters.
Originally announced back in 2018 for Syfy, the series will presumably focus, like the movie, on Midian, an underground world where outcast creatures and human/monster hybrids attempt to live in peace out of sight of the world above. The original movie was a box office and critical disappointment but has gained a cult following over the years.

Clive Barker is back. After a period of relative silence, the acclaimed horror and fantasy author and filmmaker seems to be everywhere: a new movie based on his seminal Books of Blood arrives next week, a reboot of Candyman (based on his story “The Forbidden”) is due out in 2021, and TV shows based on Hellraiser and Nightbreed are in development as well. He’s also got three new books on the way, which he signals are a return to his horror roots.
For Barker, his own return to horror — and the invigorated state of the genre itself these days — is due to one thing:
“We’re living through a time of horror, which makes what we’re doing more pertinent.”
We spoke with Barker one day after the first debate of the 2020 presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, and Barker didn’t hold back, saying he was as...
